She couldn't think of he last time she had cried this heard. Perhaps when she had been pulled away from the Doctor and that had ached. But this? This was like torture. It had been on her mind a lot recently and she knew there was a chance that one day he'd forget all about her. Even with the Doctor's reassurance she knew he couldn't promise what his future would hold. Each regeneration changed him and changed how he felt.

One day she'd be a distant memory.

She was trying to keep calm and finally managed to do so when her eyes closed. Curled up on the sofa, the tears were finally defeated by exhaustion.

"Please don't," Jonathan whimpered, cringing a touch at Jack's anger. The subconscious, lizard part of his brain that lit up around the immortals, the 'old gods' and those touched by certain things was screaming at him, begging him to shut up, to bow down...to curl up and die before he pissed off the God before him.

His rational half was wondering what the hell he had smoked that any part of him even thought about bowing before any man, even the guy with a gun.

"I know you're not going to hurt me but that doesn't mean you shouldn't put it away."

She turned to look at Jonathan, sure she saw fear in his eyes. Her heart went out to him and when she looked back to Jack it could possibly be clear to him if he looked carefully enough. It was there in her eyes that he had gotten to that part of her that longed to protect and care for the vulnerable.

"Please Jack."

Apparently, Crane had really done a number on Rose to get her sympathetic towards him after everything he'd said.

"Safety's on-- for now. But I'm not putting it away. This guy is a monster-- and I mean literally, Rose. He can mutate into this giant rampaging scarecrow monster. I would've thought it was just a split personality type of deal, but then he went acting like a complete monster to you without changing. One of us needs to be armed while he's around."

I apologized to her...I'm not good with people and I'm still learning how to be good," He looked at Rose, eyes begging her to help him calm Jack down, he was afraid that Jack was going to change his mind and just shoot him anyway. He lowered the gun towards the floor when Rose touched it, but he didn't put it away.

"No, Rose, you didn't. He hurt you. He got angry because he'd made assumption despite what you'd already made obvious, and when you stood your ground, he tore into you with the worst insults he could come up with. You didn't hurt him. And you're damn right you won't hurt her again, Dr. Crane."

Jonathan lowered his head again, wincing with Jack's words. It wasn't as bad as the Doctor's anger, which ripped through him violently, but the words still hurt, striking him.

He hadn't noticed the last time they met, how easily Jack played upon emotions that were supposed to be dead, too tired, too distracted from the transformation into Scarebeast to notice.

It was...off putting, to know there were at least two people in this world who affected him in such a way. In Gotham, it had only been Batman, easily avoided unless intentionally sought out.

This...was not good.

She wasn't aware of just how she sounded right now. It was almost like when she was defending the Daleks to the Doctor back when she first met one. She had thought herself so strong that even now, the thought that she had been used, her empathy had been used, was not something she believed.

"Does he look like he's going to hurt me?"

"I can only go by the way TMI messaging, but from what I read? It's not your fault that he turned what was clearly a conversation purely about casual sex into now we're together and if you don't want to be, I'm going psycho on you."

He scoffed. "Wants to change. Right. Rose, he's some kind of psychotic psychiatrist. You don't think he's perfectly capable of telling you what you want to hear? He already got two people to sleep with him playing the embarrassed virgin. He gloated about it when I tried to get ahold of you to warn you. Now he breaks into our house after the way he talked to you?"

Jonathan rolled shifted, rolling his eyes where Rose couldn't see them, before glaring at Jack over her head.

This was getting riddiculous. Yes, he had screwed up, but seriously, it wasn't like he attacked Rose...just poked at the open wounds she wore...she shouldn't have left them so open if she didn't want the scabs pulled off.

"I didn't gloat about it, I simply told you she was busy," he said, slipping his hands into his pockets. "As for breaking in...I was concerned when she didn't answer the door. Also, you all act like I should have known it was casual, she didn't mention this until after, which of course upset me."

"He what? When did you try to get a hold of me?"

She had no idea that he had tried but she hadn't really checked her messages a lot recently. She checked the network on occasion but a lot of the time her PDA just sat beside her or in her bag if she was out. She didn't even have it with her when she went to meet him. His response about why he just came in started those alarm bells again but she also thought it was plausible. Maybe she had fallen asleep deep enough that she hadn't heard any noise from the door.

"See he was trying to help, Jack."

"From the sounds, when you were in the middle of screwing him." He didn't mean to be so blunt, but the damn compulsion... "Which is why I said 'gloating'-- making it clear that I was too late to stop you."

He rolled his eyes where both of them could clearly see. "Help? Right. Hey, why were you concerned? Were you concerned for altruistic reasons, or were you concerned because you might be inconvenienced and have to spend more effort looking for her to torment some more?"

God damn direct questioning.

"I was concerned I might have to waste more time looking for her when it could be spent on other things rather then sucking up so that she would be my friend again," Jonathan snapped, unable to stop himself, glaring at Jack.

He really, really hated the truth compulsion.

"Look, we had sex, I said some things I shouldn't have and now I'm making up for it, there's no reason to come storming in here like I tortured your grandmother while you watched," Jonathan said, growing annoyed. "If Rose wants to associate with me anymore that's her choice. Not. Your."

"Wait he posted something when we were...?" She turned to look at Jonathan, clearly upset to hear that. How could someone do something like that then claim to be a friend?

She was so confused. She just didn't know what she was meant to do or how she was meant to do it. Jack seemed to be so angry and yet Jonathan was clearly vulnerable and in need of some support.

"Jack..." she finally said silently. She just didn't know and was worried that she would make the wrong decision either way.

	If Crane was going to dodge around with his answers, then Jack would definitely keep up the direct questioning. It was too easy to wriggle out of them otherwise. "She's my best friend. Jonathan gritted his teeth in frustration, glaring harder at Jack, as if he could turn the man to dust with just his eyes.

"I shouldn't have called her a whore, I shouldn't have implied she was worthless...which she's not," he stressed, telling the truth. "And I shouldn't have implied the Doctor had moved on."

He took a breath after the rush of words, before snapping at Jack. "Anything else, you're highness? Or would you like me to prostrate myself?"

She hadn't realised that she had taken a slight step toward Jack as she waited for Jonathan's reply. She knew he was one of the few she could trust completely no matter what. Really, it was only Jack and the Doctor she ever felt that way about and with good reason even if they were also her biggest weakness. No one could hurt her like them.

"But he has moved on," she said quietly. She had believed that from him at least.

However as upset as she felt, she didn't like that tone he spoke in about Jack. "Jonathan don't talk to him like that."

Sure, he could take advantage of the situation to make Crane answer things honestly, but he couldn't make the guy prostrate himself and he wouldn't if he could. That'd just be pathetic. He rolled his eyes.

It was a relief hearing Rose actually scolding Crane for something instead of defending him after all he'd said and done. Too bad it wasn't her standing up for herself, but he did appreciate it anyway. It was overridden, though, by what she said about the Doctor.

"No, Rose, he hasn't. He really, really hasn't. I have no idea why you'd think that except for this psycho saying it."

"Everything with River? I understand he is a different regeneration but it shows that he moves on." Even if he had tried to tell her differently. She was just so confused right now and wasn't entirely sure about what was going on. She just wanted everything to be easy really even if that sounded pathetic.

"Jack you know him too. He moves on. He forgets. He...picks up new people and River is proof, he falls more in love with them than anyone in his past."
