It was difficult, working without leads, contacts, allies. He was good, he was one of the best, but he wasn't a magician. He couldn't conjure the man out of thin air. Still, all his intelligence pointed to Harkness being here. They wouldn't have sent a top agent if they weren't completely sure; at least, he hoped they wouldn't.

He'd settled into his assigned flat, although that hadn't taken long. He didn't expect to spend much time there, it wasn't like wanted assassins just came up and knocked on the door. Once that was done, he headed out into the streets, not sure what he was looking for. Yet.

OOC: Meet Jones. Ianto Jones. Ianto was fired from Torchwood One and had his memory erased for voicing doubts about the use of the Ghost Machine. The government was still interested in him, though, so he was transferred and became a secret agent. He never returned to Cardiff and never worked for Torchwood Three. As far as he knows, Jack Harkness is a suspected assassin he has been assigned to track.

Jack had dressed in suitable period clothing-- jeans and a plain shirt-- to better tail the woman that he was almost positive had a high-ranking position in Torchwood. They were the only people in the 21st century who really knew about extraterrestrial life, and he'd found out that they knew about the Doctor. They were his one real chance to find the Doctor and Rose with something besides dumb luck and coincidence. He'd been stuck back in the 21st century for months now, vortex manipulator burnt out. If he could finally get his hands on someone who could give him answers, maybe he could get back to the people who'd turned his life around and shown him how messed up the Time Agency really was. The problem was actually getting to that woman to get the answers.

Just in case, he had his gun with him but concealed. He didn't think that woman would pull a weapon on him, but he needed some kind of self-defense if it happened. His watch on the woman's apartment looked like it would paid off as she left it while he was there, presumably off to a late dinner or meeting. He waited for her to get some distance; he couldn't follow too closely.

OOC: Meet AU!Jack Harkness, who met the Doctor and Rose when he was still a 20-something-year-old Time Agent who'd stolen the Jack Harkness identity, but who got separated from them and "bounced" to the end of the 21st century instead of the 19th. The woman he's been stalking isn't actually in Torchwood, just a government worker, so it looks really suspicious. For lack of suitable pictures, I'll still be using his regular icons, but he's meant to be younger.

The thing that made this case so difficult, yet so intriguing, was that no one had been able to figure out what Harkness was after. His target was a very minor official, he had no connections to any political or religious movement, he seemed overly interested in the most odd and useless junk...There was no direction, no motive, that he could tell.

That made the work of predicting him and following more luck than logic. He wandered into the downtown area, walking among the shops and restaurants.

	Jack followed a good distance away from his target, working their way (though only one of them knew it was they) downtown. Apparently the menus posted outside the restaurants were worth some attention, and while that distraction would help, it was still too public. It was getting towards late evening, but the downtown area was still fairly busy with people out shopping and dining. There was no guarantee that Harkness would come here, but since he had no idea what the man wanted, food, drink and company seemed logical places to start.

He thought about getting something to drink, since just an observer iswas creepy, but an observer with a cup of coffee was a people watcher and therefore perfectly acceptable. Once he'd gotten his beverage, he settled into at one of the small sidewalk tables

He let his eyes casually scan the crowd, not looking for anything in particular. Just looking.

Damn! Just his luck, along came a group that stopped for a chat with his target, maybe going to stick around for a dinner meeting. No way to get at the target if that happened, unless he had a chance later, maybe during a trip to the toilet or some other separation. Bad idea to try to sit around listening and give them a chance to see him. He was pretty memorable, if he did say so himself.

Luckily for him, the group started walking off, apparently not sticking around after all. Finally! Jack started closing the distance, following the sidewalk on the opposite side of the road from his target.

He watched the people casually, individuals, couples, large groups. Watched them form and come together and fall apart. He could almost understand why people enjoyed this.

Something caught his eye. Not anything in particular, but a person moving not as part of the crowd. Their movements were beyond natural, studied and deliberate. He had to trace the street again to determine where he'd seen it, so subtle was the effect. He scanned again, focusing on the movement, not on individuals. It took him a while to find it again, but his eyes trained on it. Harkness! Or at least, he suspected. Photographic evidence was sketchy.

He walked at his own pace instead of the crowd's, making use of their numbers when it helped him be less obvious, but brushing on past them when he came upon anyone who would slow his own speed. He kept his focus on the target even as he dodged human traffic around him.

Perfect-- alley ahead behind two buildings, one of which was currently unoccupied and up for lease. He could grab the target there and get them inside off the street.

	He followed Harkness with his eyes, slowly getting to his feet as the target moved further away. He didn't follow, not yet, just kept Harkness in his line of sight. He had to step back out into the flow of foot traffic to keep the man in view. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

When he got up towards the alley he was aiming for, he moved in closer to the target, running lines through his head that he could use to get her into the alley without seeming like he was trouble for her. Too bad he didn't have the kind of equipment at his disposal that he would've in his own time. It would help SO much to just paralyze her vocal cords or spread some disorienting fiction mist. Good thing he had his own charm. Maybe lines weren't the right move...

So to start with, he "accidentally" bumped into her to throw off her walk, get her aimed more towards the alley, conveniently knocking her purse to the ground rather than grabbing it. He didn't want her thinking he was a thief and shouting over it, or worse, deciding to shoot him with some Torchwood doohickey. Better to play it off as a mistake, and when she was distracted, grab her into the building. He was already breaking the electronic lock while apologizing for his "mistake".

	He watched as Harkness bumped into the woman he was following, and made his way closer, hurrying more now. This was a busy street in full view of lots of people, but they had no idea what Harkness was capable of, or how he might act if cornered. He certainly didn't seem like the most stable of individuals. He wove his way through the press of people. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

When the lock clicked open, Jack grinned to himself and closed his wrist strap. He pushed the door open with one hand and then crouched down by the woman, as if to help her with her purse, but instead holding up a spray he'd pocketed from one of those Torchwood hidey-holes. He hadn't gotten information on the Doctor, but at least he got little item with that ridiculous "T" logo on it. He might not know exactly what it did, but hey, that Torchwood symbol should suggest to its agents all sorts of possible aggressive uses. They seemed really into that kind of thing.

"Quiet now. Inside."

He couldn't see them now, hidden from his view as they knelt down on the pavement in the shadow of one of the buildings. As he drew nearer, he could see the woman's purse on the ground; sure Harkness wasn't simply trying to rob her? But no, she didn't seem upset or frightened. And then she did. He'd probably told her to do something, or shown that he was armed. Either way, he started almost running over to where they were, trying not to attract Harkness' attention.

	A sudden surge in the crowds stopped his forward motion, as well as cutting Harkness and the woman off from his view. He pushed and shoved and tried to get around, but the fluid mass of people seemed to resist his efforts. By the time he could see them again, he was farther away than where he started. By the time that crowd had thinned a bit, Jack had already led the woman into the building, taking her purse so she couldn't go for her phone or any mace she might have. He made a point of setting the purse aside as soon as they were inside; this wasn't about her money, after all.

"Now," he said, "you're going to tell me how to access those Torchwood databases."

The woman's look of utter confusion wasn't exactly what Jack expected.

Shit! He looked around, but they could have gotten to anywhere while he wasn't looking. Gazing around the crowd would most likely prove useless, so he headed over the alley near where he saw them last. It was empty, in stark contrast to the busy main road. Oh well, least he was sure that they hadn't gone down here. So either they had ducked into one of the buildings, or he had lost them in the crowd. Buildings were the most attractive option right now.

As he argued with the woman, he had to make himself keep his voice down from the volume he'd like to use; yelling at her would get too obvious all the way from the street. As long as nobody came down the alley, he should have been fine.

It was frustrating, though, as she kept denying that she was with Torchwood or even knew what Torchwood was. Maybe it was even true on some level-- maybe Torchwood did some kind of training on its agents so they wouldn't be able to reveal anything, some sort of hypnotic command. But he didn't exactly have anyone else on hand to question, did he?

He looked around the alley for second, like he was going to see an arrow saying "They went this way." He examined the nearby doors, seeing if any of them showed signs of having a forced lock, of even of being opened recently. One of them looked like a possible lead, so he stood quietly outside for second, listening for any voices, before slowly turning the handle and easing the door open.

He tried rephrasing the questions, and when that didn't work, threats that he didn't really mean to carry out but seemed very believable with the look in his eye and roughness of his voice. Thank goodness he'd left behind the voice-cracking phase a few years ago. She conveniently had one of those popular PDAs, so Jack took that from her purse. He could at least copy all the data off of it and sift through it later, in case there was something in there that she was failing to tell him.

Dammit, she was just not budging, not even trying to make up answers or anything. He needed to add some more pressure-- after all, the only things he'd done so far were talk at her and point a spray canister. He drew his gun out, keeping it pointed at the ceiling for now.

"Stop wasting my time. Tell me. Tell me how to get into those databases, and if you can't do that, then you better tell me the information I want from the databases. Tell me about the Doctor."

	The woman apparently agreed (not that she knew it was agreeing) that she was dealing with a crazy man. She tried to explain herself again, that she wasn't whatever this Torchwood was, and told him to look in her purse and he'd see her government ID. "Fine, but don't try to run while I do this, hmm?"
