WHO: Jeremy and Anna
WHEN: After this
WHERE: Apartment 501C
WHAT: Jeremy wants to talk to Anna face to face
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In progress

Jeremy should have just stayed at home. He knew that. He should have stayed in his apartment, or, better still, gone to see his girlfriend. The fact that he was climbing the stairs to Anna's floor, going to see the one girl who rivaled in his affections, the one girl he had no will power around, was insanity, at best. But he wanted to see her, and not just because it was stupid to have an argument about feelings over text. He had things he needed to sort out with Vicki, but everything Anna had said had affected him deeply. He hadn't meant to hurt her. Hell, he hadn't even been expecting her to turn up. Perhaps if he'd known she was coming, he wouldn't have jumped into things with Vicki. But Vicki had been there for him when he'd been turned into a vampire. True, she'd made it harder for him, testing his self restraint to the limit. And, true, she'd wanted to drink his blood to get high, but on some level they loved and understood each other. Before, that had meant everything to Jeremy. Now, he wasn't sure it was enough. He had changed so much since he'd been that messed up kid who liked to hang around in cemeteries getting high and screw his sister's boyfriend's older sister. That wasn't who he was any more. He hated to think it, but he was better than that. And that was all Vicki was ever going to be. She had said it once, but he hadn't realised how true it was until recently. This place had brought to light all the differences between them and what they wanted. Jeremy knew he would always love Vicki. But it wasn't enough. At least, it didn't feel like it right now.

Jeremy mounted the top of the stairs and found the door to the first apartment - Anna's. He licked his lips, wondering if he should just leave now, without even knocking. That would have been stupid for two reasons though, he decided. 1) He'd text Anna to tell her he was coming. 2) She'd have been able to hear him coming up the stairs. If he left now, he'd look even more of a dick than he already did. So he knocked on the door and waited for a reply.

This really was a conversation that should happen in person. Text messages were not the ideal forum for the discussion of feelings and all that they entailed. But there was a reason Anna had not brought that up and she felt it was a good one. Texts were impersonal. They allowed her to give herself just a measure of distance, just enough that she did not feel like she was going to go mad. But if Jeremy was here, all of those feelings would be right there and so close for the taking. Anna did not just like Jeremy, it could not be that simple. She had been and still was willing to spend eternity with him. Of all the people she had turned in her very long lifetime, he was the only one she had wanted to because she could not bear the thought of living without him. Seeing him with another girl, knowing that the one thing she wanted she could not have, it was nearly unbearable.

But he wanted to talk in person so they would talk in person, despite her better judgement. Anna sat on the couch staring at her pda as she waited for him to make his way up the stairs. She heard him before he knocked, out in the hall. For a moment she just sat there, unsure if she should answer. If she stayed put eventually he would leave and they could avoid this for just a little bit longer.

Slowly Anna got up and made her way to the door. Unlocking it, she opened it and gave a weak, small smile. "Jeremy." she said, moving out of the way. "Come on in."

Jeremy stared at the closed door for a moment. Anna was taking her time answering, and that couldn't be a good sign. Jeremy knew she could have been at the door and had it open in a matter of seconds if she'd wanted to.

This wasn't right. They shouldn't be like this. Anna had always made him laugh, and he hoped he'd made her happy too. There shouldn't be this dark cloud hanging over them. He desperately wanted to make that right again, but he knew it wasn't that simple. Whatever he decided, at least one person he loved was going to get hurt.

Jeremy could have dwelled on that point all day, but just then Anna opened the door and asked him inside. He paused for a moment, watching her half hearted attempt at a smile, before he stepped into her apartment. He really hated seeing her like this. She was strong, feisty, lovely, funny, lurky Anna. He couldn't stand the thought that he was bringing her down. He had to fix it.

Once he was inside, he turned back to face her. Despite the circumstances, he was, once again, so glad of her presence. He had missed her when she had died, but he missed her when he wasn't with her anyway. He had when they'd been dating. She would disappear for days, and he'd miss her like Hell before she came back and he could feel whole again. It was almost a shock to discover she still had that power over him, after everything.

"Please don't be pissed at me," he said weakly, his eyes wide as he looked over at her.

There was a palpable awkward in the air that was just delightful, in that really awful sense of the word. But it was not as if Anna was able to do anything about that. Looking at him just hurt her heart in a way that she had managed to avoid for so long. So instead she spent a very large amount of brain power on closing the door and making sure it was shut. But that only ate up a few seconds at most and then she was looking back at him with those sad, wide eyes that she had so much trouble resisting.

What was it about the lost ones that always tugged at her hearts strings? Even if he had grown up so much, even more then from when she had known him apparently, he was still that lost boy deep down. And apparently instead of helping him find his way her being here was just making him more lost, fancy that.

"I'm not pissed at you." Anna sighed gently.

Her hand carded through her hair as she tried to think. Right now all she wanted to was kiss him, kiss away that weakness in his voice and that ache in her heart. But that would not fix anything and she knew that. It would be nice if John was wandering around in the common area but there was no such luck. "This all isn't your fault. It's not like you're being malicious or something." Anna waved it off vaguely, not wanting to look him in the eyes right yet.

Jeremy nodded a little. He really wasn't doing any of this to hurt her, or Vicki, or himself. Because it was hurting him. He didn't want any of this. He'd never been exactly what you would call sociable - he didn't have many friends, and Vicki had been his first girlfriend - and he didn't enjoy this attention being on him at all! He just wanted a nice normal girlfriend. Just the one. Although right now, he was beginning to think that girls in general were bad for his sanity.

Slowly, tentatively, Jeremy took a few steps closer to Anna. He had to keep reminding himself that she was a vampire, and he couldn't just presume anything when he was around her. But he knew deep down that she would never hurt him. It was something Vicki told him a lot, but even without it being said, Jeremy trusted that more of Anna than he ever could of Vicki.

"I'm glad you're not pissed at me," Jeremy said, stopping a couple of steps from her. "Because you're literally the only person who can make me laugh in this place, and you know what I'm like when I mope." He gave her a little smile - little but genuine.

It took every thing she had to stay put as he walked towards her. Half he her wanted to bolt and the other part wanted to close the distance. The sheer polarity of her emotions was the only thing keeping her there, letting him approach her and then stop. Everything was just so tense and she hated it. Life made sense around Jeremy. It always had, no matter all the random and senseless stuff that happened around them.

Right now everything felt so uncomfortable that Anna had no idea where the sense was supposed to come from.

When he told her that she made him laugh a genuine smile twitched at her lips. And just like that it made sense again. It had been centuries since someone had made her feel like this, made her that small bit of happiness just so easy. "You do look a bit like a kicked puppy when you do." she laughed gently, daring to look up at him with that small tick of a smile that was trying to hide itself but failing utterly.

Jeremy saw the familiar smile on her lips, and his own smile grew wider. That was more like it. That was the Anna he knew and loved. And he did love her. He hadn't at first, but he had fallen for her over time. Finding out Vicki was dead had shaken their relationship, and he'd never really had the chance to mend it properly, but it had taken him losing her to make him realise how much she really meant to him. It made it worse that he was still convinced he could have saved her if he'd tried.

"Exactly," Jeremy agreed with her. "And all that pouting makes my face hurt, so really, it's in both our best interests that you're not pissed at me." He nodded, still smiling.

He reached out and took her hand, pulling her over to the couch so they could sit down. Standing around was way too formal. The whole point of them was that they could relax around each other. Hell, that was one of the reasons he'd started dating her in the first place. Ever since his parents had died, he'd been lost and trying to find who he really was. He wasn't someone's son any more, and then he found out he wasn't even someone's brother. He was just Jeremy. But it was hard being Jeremy when he didn't know who that guy was supposed to be. Anna had made that transition so much easier and even after she had died, her influence had continued to help him.

Flopping down on the couch, Jeremy pulled Anna down beside him, holding onto her hand a little longer than was strictly necessary.

"Well with an argument like that how can I argue?" Anna teased lightly. Why did this all have to come so easily? The awkwardness at least provided some sort of space between them. Smiling and joking, falling back into how they were supposed to be, Anna had no idea how that was supposed to help the situation.

When he took her hand, she let him. Logically she should have pulled away. Sure she could join him on the couch but she should not be holding his hand, letting him lead her there. Because once he took her hand she took his, her fingers tangling easily with his as she let herself be led. She followed and let Jeremy pull her down next to him. It was all too comfortable, too familiar. For a moment she leaned against him instinctively before remembering that she was not supposed to do that any longer. So she sat straight up, moving away slightly and then leaned on the arm of the couch, keeping that space between them.

But she squeezed his hand before she let go of it, bringing her hands back to her lap and to herself. She needed to keep her hands to herself. "So. Talking." she tried to start, falling back into that uncomfortable distance.

Jeremy looked over at Anna once they were both sitting. He could tell she was trying to keep her distance and he had to admit that really bothered him. He shuffled closer to her on the couch so his knee was just touching her leg. "Anna," he said, frowning. "Come on... This is you and me. Even when you were planning to feed me to your mom we were friends. I know this situation is... fucked up. But I hate this. This awkwardness. It just sucks. This isn't who we are." He knew it wasn't as simple as he made it out to be. He had a girlfriend, and that was a problem because he knew he was in love with Anna too. But he couldn't just leave Vicki like that. He couldn't hurt her. But it killed him to know that he was hurting Anna in the process.

"Jeremy stop." Anna shook her head to clear it as he moved closer to her. Reaching out for his knee, she moved it just enough so that it was no longer touching her. It was not that she did not want to touch him, she did. But it was all too much. The only thing she had wanted since she got here was to hold onto him, to be reassured that she was alive and that she loved him and that at least here they were both safe. The memory of almost dying was still there and it was taking everything she had not to just take the comfort she wanted. Even if Jeremy was making it difficult, which really seemed to be what he always did.

"You can't push me like this." Anna plead softly, looking over at him sadly. "We need some sort of distance."

Jeremy frowned, looking genuinely hurt that she had pushed his knee away. He hadn't been coming onto her or trying to push her as she had said. He just wanted to be close to her. This was hard for him too. The last time he had seen her at home, she was being pulled out of his arms. He had longed to touch her again so many times since then and it hurt him that she didn't want him to.

He caught her hand before she had chance to pull it back away from him. "I don't want distance, Anna," he said, still frowning. He held tightly to her hand, pulling it closer so it was pressed against his chest. "I have missed you so much. I'm sorry for all this, but I can't help but want to be near to you!"

Anna knew this had to be difficult for him too, it had to be. But if there was something Jeremy had a history of it was pushing her and he was very good at it. While he might just want to touch her, to establish that connection, Anna knew that it would not end at that. And if that happened then it would be even more painful on top of everything else that was going on.

Before she could stop herself, she followed through with the momentum of him pulling her hands against his chest. Leaning in, she caught his lips in a soft kiss because that was what she wanted. The irrational part of her mind, full of worry and hurt and want, it knew that if Vicki tried to challenge her for him she could tear her apart even if Anna did not want to be that girl.

Jeremy hadn't expected her to kiss him, but he didn't push her away. He knew he should have. This was bad. This was what Ric had told him not to do. But Anna's lips on his felt so right! He let his eyes shut as he kissed her back, his hand still holding hers to his chest.

After a moment, he pulled back slightly, frowning. He gulped. He didn't know what to say. He knew he needed to say something, but every time he tried to think of something it just didn't come. After a moment he couldn't stand it any more, and kissed her again, more roughly, full of all the passion he'd been surpressing since her death. He slipped his arms around her, pulling her as close to him as possible. "Oh God," he whispered against her lips after a moment. "Anna... I'm sorry."

Part of her expected him to push her away, that was the right thing to do right? But when he didn't and instead opted for kissing her back everything seemed to make sense again. This was how they were supposed to be, that heavy ache in her chest that told her that she wanted to always be with him. It was that feeling when he kissed her that let he know that she wanted to turn him.

When he pulled back it was all she could do to not just kiss him again. Anna waited for that heartbreaking moment when he told her to stop, got up and just left. After all he had Vicki, she was who he had wanted even when he had her. But instead he was kissing her and there was no stopping her from kissing him back, her arms wrapping around his neck desperately to press against him. "Jeremy" she whispered back desperately. "I thought, I'd thought." But that wasn't a thought she could continue so she just kissed him again because that was so much simpler.

Jeremy knew this was quickly spiralling out of control. He was kissing her again, hard and deep, his lips urgent on hers. This was Anna; this was right. But he knew it wasn't. This was cheating on Vicki, and that really wasn't good. He was an awful person and a terrible boyfriend, but he just couldn't help himself.

He pulled Anna easily onto his lap. She was so small and it was so easy to forget how strong she really was when she looked so vulnerable. He loved that about her. He loved everything about her. She was perfect and kissing her felt perfect. He let his hands run slowly up her back, the motion almost a subconscious reaction to how close she was. He needed to stop this now, while he still could, but the fact remained that he just didn't want to! One of his hands reached her hair and tangled in the long, dark waves. It was only when he needed to come up for breath that he broke the kiss. He pulled his head back a little, looking down at her, his eyes wide and worried.

There was a comfort to this. As desperate and lustful as her kiss was, there was reassurance there as well. Jeremy was here, he cared about her. Her death had not wiped that away as she had worried it would. Considering his lingering feelings for Vicki she had no idea why she had worried but it was not as if Anna had loved many people in her long life. She had seen what happened when people supposedly loved you with Jeremy's ancestor. But her Gilbert was different, she knew that.

Anna fit into his lap so perfectly. Everything was as it was supposed to be. But when the kiss broke she saw that worry in his eyes. This wasn't right, they both knew it. Even if she did not know this Vicki girl that did not mean that Anna wanted to be cruel.

Kissing his lips lightly just one more time, she pulled away, crawling out of his lap. "Jeremy, I think you should go." she said quietly, miserable.

Jeremy let his eyes flutter shut as she brushed her lips against his one more time. He felt her move away from him but he didn't open his eyes again. He didn't want to face this. This wasn't what he'd wanted. He could hear the misery in Anna's voice. He took a deep breath before slowly standing up, finally opening his eyes. He looked down at her. "I need to talk to Vicki..." he said after a moment, frowning. What, exactly, he was going to say to his girlfriend, he really didn't know. But he could just leave things like they were. "I'll call you?" he offered quietly, not moving towards the door. He didn't want to leave, although he knew he had to.

Anna could not help the weak, pathetic little laugh that came out of her when he said he needed to talk to Vicki. Right, cause that was going to end so well for the both of them. Not that Vicki was much of a threat to her, but it was going to upset Jeremy. She rubbed the palms of her hands against her forehead as he said he would call her. Everything would be so simple if she just dragged him into her bedroom but sadly that was not in the plan.

"Right... hope it goes well." Anna sighed, not looking up at him.

Jeremy chanced a glance down at her. She wasn't looking at him. He sighed. He had to put this right, somehow. Slowly, he nodded before turning and crossing to the door to her apartment. "Anna," he said, looking back at her. He didn't know what to say. That he had really enjoyed kissing her again? That he loved her? That he was sorry? It would all sound pathetic right now. The situation was in his hands and only he could make it right. He bit his lip before turning back to the door and letting himself out.
