When: Wednesday night
Where: Cas' apartment
What: The watch
Rating: Medium for adult themes.
Status: Incomplete, closed

He only took the pills when he was lonely. Those long, slow, sleepless nights when he felt the lack of companionship in his life. Cas was a personable man, he had friends, was liked by his employees, was respected and that was something, it really was something, but then he came home and it faded in his empty rooms. He only took them to sleep.

He stared at the bottle. Cas Taylor had never contemplated suicide before. Taking his own life. He had always had too much to do with it. No. He stopped. He couldn't even think in those terms any more. He didn't have a past. He'd never flown in a plane, tasted warm beer, seen the Statue of Liberty from the inside. He'd never seen Breakfast at Tiffany's, never bought coffee from the little van that sat outside his boyfriend's apartment. Never held a hand or kissed a mouth or touched a cheek. His hands fell open.

He was a fiction.

He picked up the pills. They were real. He held them for a while. They clacked softly against each other. He uncapped the lid.

No last name until you marry Sam He wondered, for a moment, if he would like Sam, be happy with him. He wondered what sort of man he was besides a little snappy and a bit of a player. He wondered if he was gay in his other life or if he had "turned" for this Castiel. He certainly seemed convincing as a straight guy. So Castiel was troubled, besieged, socially incompetent and had weird, easily angered, friends. But did he ever need to take pills to sleep because if it didn't hear another voice soon he was going to scream? Or did he just reach out his hand, settle into Sam's arms and close his eyes?

Cas had been alone since he came but he thought he was successful, doing well. He was busy. He has friends. A life. A clue.

He took two pills from the bottle and washed them down with a little water from the nightstand. Then a third. He stopped.

If he kept going he would be free but wasn't he taking the will of someone else? Wasn't it murder too?

Gabriel's brother. Gabriel had been a good fr- Gabriel was a good friend and Cas Taylor didn't think killing his brother was the act of a friend. His thoughts slowed, become strikingly clear, simple.

I don't think it would matter, if I loved someone, if they were a guy or a girl.
Cas sat on the edge of his bed, staring into the open bottle. He didn't move.

The look on Cas' face cut Gabriel to the quick, even though he couldn't quite place why. There was just such a feeling of loss about it that he could not ignore.

"I feel...like I could use a friend," he said, "What about you?"

Cas found within himself a thin smile and offered it to Gabriel. "Yeah. Yeah I think I could handle one of those."

He lowered his head again, lifted his free hand, held it up on front of his face, open and closed it a few times. His voice was small as he said. "You know, I thought I knew what this hand had done, where it had been... Like anyone knows."

Gabriel shrugged out of his coat, hanging it up neatly, and made his way over to where Cas stood. He felt a brief moment of remembrance, of wondering what to do with his own two hands--just a flash--and then it was gone.

"Maybe we can fix that. Give you something to keep your hands occupied."

Cas looked up at Gabriel with a little frown. "I don't think you meant what just just sounded like."

Gabriel laughed, realizing a little belatedly what he had implied. "Yeah. Or maybe I was trying to make you laugh. Comedy was never my strong suit." He shrugged. "My mother always said that kneading bread dough was extremely cathartic," he went on, deftly changing the subject. "I think, secretly, she just wanted to beat something. Probably my Father."

Cas didn't laugh. He dropped his hand into his lap. "I don't think we had mothers," he said softy. "I don't think anyone ever gave us advice on dough. I think... we had the same father. What do you say to that?"

"I think we look too close in age to have the same father without separate mothers," he said, logically. "Besides, you've seen my belly button."

"Only takes nine months to make a baby... or we could be twins. How old do you think you are anyway?" Cas said, sounding despondent, but I don't think we had separate mothers...

I remember how to all smelled. How to felt. And I am meant to just accept this? Give it all up to a stranger?"

"I'm 36," he said, "How old do you think you are?" He didn't like the tone in Cas' voice. It was too despairing. Too...hopeless. "Why are you letting yourself get so worked up over something Parker said? You know she's not exactly the most well balance person on the planet."

It was mean of him to say, maybe, but it was true. She even admitted it herself.

"This body is 34-" Castiel stopped. "I mean 34. But that doesn't seem right somehow..."

He shook his head. "If it was just what she said you'd be right but... come on. You know something's up right?"

Okay, so maybe they could be brothers. He'd heard some customers remarking about the similarities between them, in the shape and bone structure of their faces. But that was just coincidence. Right?

"Well, obviously something is up, with everyone disappearing and being replaced by doppelgangers. But you know this place likes to fuck with people's minds, Cas. You can't let it get to you."

"I know this place likes to fuck with people. I mean, there were zombies. But doesn't that just support her case? Isn't this just the sort of thing this place does?"

He hesitated, tighten his fists. "I think you might be happier as him."

"I'm happy as me," he said, "Maybe we just don't belong here." He didn't know. And he didn't like not knowing. Doubt wasn't something that sat well with him, for reasons that he could not qualify.

"I don't think anyone here belongs here Gabriel," he said ironically. "I belong in San Francisco. And you? Look like an East Coast man. But we're here, I have a crush on a straight guy and have found the best friend I've ever had. I like this... barely function mess. I... wanna stay me." Cas started to unscrew the lid on the little bottle.

"Then stay you. Forget what Parker said--she's delusional! She's criminally insane, okay?" Gabriel was becoming agitated. But when he saw Cas open the pill bottle, his demeanor shifted abruptly into one of almost inhuman stillness.

His eyes narrowed. "Cas?" His voice was low. Calm, yet gravely serious. "What are you doing?"

"Haven't been sleeping very well," he said, his voice level. "Tried everything, got these. One's not enough so I was gonna top up." He looked up at Gabriel.

"I told her I was going to decide to stay me. She said it was impossible. I think... she just wanted me out of the way to get him back. I think... she missed him." The lid now removed Cas spilled a few of the little red pills into his palm.

"Cas." Gabriel leveled his gaze at his employer and friend. Sure, he had logical explanations, but there was just something setting off red flags in the dancer's mind. "Are you sure you only took one? You sound a little out of it."

"Took three, three isn't enough either." Cas said casually as he lifted his hand, preparing to add the others.

Gabe reached out and grasped Cas' wrist. "Three is plenty," he said, "I won't let you drug yourself into oblivion any more than I would have let my sister do. Now you just take it easy, all right?"

Cas stared at the wrist, examined the pressure. He wasn't touched that much any more. It was... nice. It didn't stop him shaking his head. "I'm still thinking about this," he whispered. "I'd rather not."

"If you were Ms. Crowley," Gabriel said, "I would offer to give you a foot rub and make terrible jokes. But I guess we could always watch some god-awful buddy comedy or something."

Cas smiled and lowered his hand. That made him lower his hand. The three pills he already had were making him a little drowsy but he figured he could fight them long enough to watch a film. He dropped the pills back in the bottle and held the bottle out to his friend.

"There's beer in the fridge. You can pick the film," he smiled softly, really looking at Gabriel this time.

Gabriel closed his hand around the bottle, wishing that he could just make it disappear. But he stood, clasping his friend's shoulder for a moment before taking the pills away with him as he headed to the kitchen to fetch the beer--leaving them behind on the top of the fridge somewhere, out of sight, out of mind.

"Have you ever seen...what's the movie I am thinking of...the space opera parody...Spaceballs?" Not exactly a buddy comedy, but still, plenty of stupid humor. "A buddy of mine in college played it for me once, and we laughed our asses off for weeks."

Cas relaxed once the pills were out of the room. His shoulder felt warm. He settled back in the chair. Maybe, just maybe, it was going to be OK.

And then it felt a little better than OK as Cas broke into a delighted laugh. "I remember that! I saw it on release but it's been years. I'd love to see it again. Yeah, Spaceballs. And the Princess Bride. We have to have that."

The cushion Cas threw bounced off Gabriel's shoulder. "And a glass of milk, Boy," he commanded, his eyes twinkling in delight.

As the pillow bounce off his shoulder, Gabriel drop-kicked it back with almost inhuman reflexes. Or maybe it was just dancer's grace and athletic coordination.

"All right, but I want to see your face planted in that pillow by morning!"

"I'll even bite it if you like," Cas responded cheekily catching the pillow and holding it close.

"And warm milk would be even better."

"Heh." Gabriel just laughed, feeling quite pleased that he had gotten his friend smiling again. He headed back to the kitchen to head up the milk, figuring it would help get Cas to sleep even faster. Maybe even before they got through the films. It would probably be a good thing--but Gabe had pretty much determined to stay with Cas the rest of the night to keep an eye on him.

"Here you go, buttercup," he quipped, handing him the milk as he sat back down. "Drink up."

"Thank you Farm Boy," "Buttercup" said primly. "Now fetch the remote. You may stay if you wish," he conceded, making space on the couch beside him.

He hoped Gabriel stayed. There was room in his massive bed or even the couch (and Cas was too much the gentleman to cross that line with Gabriel.) He did, however, lean his weight on his friend's shoulder, suddenly feeling heavy. He watched the television, eyes at half-mast.

Gabriel handed over said remote, settling back down on the couch when the movie was set up. "Don't worry, boss," he murmured as the opening sequence rolled up, "I'm not going anywhere." He was in for the long haul.
