Entry tags:castiel, dean winchester, god, zachariah

WHO: Dean Winchester, Castiel, Zachariah and God later.
WHAT: Zachariah is going to learn why you don't fuck with God's chosen one.
WHEN: Shortly after this.
WHERE: Bar in Colligo.
RATING: R to be safe.
STATUS: Complete.

Dean sat at the bar and poured himself a glass of whiskey. He'd asked the bartender to leave the bottle, not that he planned on finishing it. After a moment's consideration, he poured Cas a glass too. One wouldn't hurt, and the guy deserved it, all things considered. They were waiting for Zachariah...who was definitely Dean's least favorite angel. And he knew there was no love lost between the guy and Cas. He still hadn't gotten over that stunt with the Croatoan future, and he really did not want to have to deal with Zach right now. He raised his shot glass and gave Cas a nod. "Cheers," he said with a wry grin, knocking the shot back.

He saw Zach walk in and set down his glass, getting to his feet. "Oh joy," he drawled sarcastically. "You decided to grace us with your presence." And he really wanted to just haul off and punch him, but he figured he'd let the guy be smug a bit first. It would just make it that much better when he did hit him.

He drew his fist back and punched Zachariah hard.

Or not.

"You know," he said with a satisfied smile, "they say never hit a guy with a closed fist...but it is, on occasion, hilarious!" He didn't expect either of them to get the reference. He shook his hand, because damn that hurt. But it sure felt good. Of course, he'd assume when God said he could hit Zach, that it would actually have some affect, but maybe she hadn't made her move yet. Any day now, he thought to himself.

Zachariah's smile didn't fade as his head swivelled to the side.
"Feel better Dean?" Zachariah moved off to stroll around a bit.
"You know, I don't have anything personal against you. I actually admire your conviction to what your believe. It's admirable but it doesn't change the fact you are misguided.

You want to kill Lucifer, so do we, but the difference is we have a way to do it while you are scratching about in the dark. Dean, we want to get this done quickly and you are merely delaying it, letting Lucifer cause his pain and destruction, giving him more of a chance to get to your brother, while you search for an alternative that doesn't exist. I know it is a lot to ask, Dean, but to stop Lucifer? And you will be rewarded. Don't think we want you to do this for nothing.

I should think saving your brother from that fate should be an incentive." He stopped pacing to look sincere.

Castiel stood by the bar, an empty shot glass next to his hand. He had heard many of these arguments before but Castiel knew Zachariah had made a mistake mentioning Sam. Zachariah had not addressed him so Castiel stayed silent, his inner turmoil all but invisible on his face.

He would get his chance to have his say. Dean would ensure it.
At least Dean would be safe. Zachariah wouldn't dare damage Michael's vessel.
As for himself, Castiel was not concerned. As long as Zachariah didn't get his way, as long as Dean was safe, that was what mattered.

He stood in silent support and waited his turn.

Any day now. The thought coming from one of her chosen ones washed over the Lord and caused her lips to quirk ever so slightly in faint amusement despite the seriousness of the situation. She was nearby - of course she was - close to the end of the bar. However, she was also out of sight.

For now, at least.

It wasn't that she had to be present for this part of the confrontation, but more than she wanted to witness it. Wanted to pick the perfect moment to make herself known. Because that was partially what this was about. Reminding Zachariah, even if it would be for the very last time, that she was the one in charge. She was the Lord, and had a plan, and anyone who attempted to alter it in some way - especially through the tactics he had used of late - would suffer the consequence.

So she waited. She opted to bide her time watching the handful of other patrons present, making sure that none drew too near the situation unfolding around them and that the bartender's attempts to contact the local authorities wasn't successful. Her gaze swept briefly to Castiel once that minor situation was handled, the smile upon her face turning far less quirky and much more caring.

This was going to be difficult for him, she was certain of it. Watching his brother fall. Seeing her Wrath firsthand. It was never easy for any angel to witness such a thing - save, perhaps, the Metatron who was simply accustomed to such things by now - and Castiel was so very young. Part of her almost didn't want him present for it.

However, it was as much his right to see this through as it was Dean's. She wouldn't take that from him, just as she wouldn't strip Dean of his right to cause Zachariah injury in some capacity. It wasn't, perhaps, what she would prefer, but Dean had free will and had chosen this as his means of retribution. So she would allow it, for a short while.

And then, when the time was right, she would make her own presence known and deal with the all but fallen angel personally.

"As a matter of fact," Dean said with a smile, in spite of the fact that Zachariah hadn't been hurt by the hit, "I do. I really do."

"And I'm going to kill Lucifer," Dean said with conviction. "I'm going to find the Colt and blow his goddamn brains out before he can turn my brother into his meatsuit. And I am going to do it without your help. And Sammy will never say yes to him, because he's better than you give him credit for. I don't want to be rewarded. I don't want to sell my soul to you fuckwits. I just want you to leave me the fuck alone."

He narrowed his eyes. "And don't ever try and use my brother to manipulate me. That's the quickest way to get your ass kicked."

Zachariah smirked a little. "Dean, we are not interested in your soul, merely your body. Your soul is free to go on to Heaven as is it's deserved reward. I would not dare interfere with that but do you really think the Colt will be enough? You would put your faith in a toy?
Well, I cannot say I am too shocked Dean. You have faith in that brother of yours. I hope he has learnt to say no, Dean, because we sure as Hell need him too. We need to strike now while Lucifer is vulnerable.

I mean, so many have already died at his hand or the hand of his minions. Why only a few weeks ago the lovely Ellen and her daughter lost their lives trying to save you and your brother. How many more Dean? How many more?"

Zachariah moved closer to Dean, his face suddenly serious.
"It has to be now, boy, before there is no one left so save. Don't you realise? If you say yes then Lucifer is taken down before he can touch your brother. I know you would do anything for him, Dean. Why not this?"

Castiel moved from his spot by the bar, moving to stand beside Dean. He had had enough of Zachariah's desperate manipulations. He was distressing Dean and Castiel would not allow it. "Didn't you hear him, Zachariah? He said no."

Zachariah look on a fake concerned tone. "Ah Castiel. Poor, misguided Castiel. You really believe you are helping here but all have done is make it worse. Now step back." Zachariah was loosing composure, his frustration staring to show. "You crossed me, boy, one too many times, and for that I have every right to snap you in half." There was nothing fake in Zachariah's angry glare as he raised his hand in Castiel's direction. "It's over for you," he said, his tone full of spite. "I've had enough of looking at Dean through you. Goodbye Castiel."

He advanced on the younger angel.

"No," Dean said. "I'm not doing this your way. If the Colt won't work, I'll find another way, but it's my decision. Free will's a bitch, ain't it?" He froze for a moment, at the mention of Jo and Ellen, feeling his stomach drop and closing his eyes. Dead? They were dead? Fuck. As much as he wanted to believe Zachariah was lying about that, he knew he wasn't. Just...fuck.

And then Castiel was stepping in, and Zachariah made the mistake of threatening his angel. And, goddamn it, you do not threaten one of Dean Winchester's people. Especially with Dean right there. Dean stepped between the two and leveled Zachariah with a deadly glare. "No," he said coldly. "You don't get to touch him. Not him. Not Sam. Not anyone. They're mine, and you don't fuck with mine, you stupid sonuvabitch."

And then he punched Zachariah again.

Copper. The taste of... copper. Zachariah knew the word for it but he don't know how. At first it was just numb them the blood came thundering back in. His mouth fell open in a raw gasp. The shock was real. He brought his hand to his face but his eyes were on Dean. How? his eyes asked as they started in horror. Then the fury replaced it. He began to roar, he raised his fist. He flew at Dean.

Castiel did not step away as Zachariah advanced on him. He did not get to defend himself though. Dean stepped in and Castiel was not surprised, merely concerned. He raised a hand to restrain Dean but he found he didn't have to. Dean had already retaliated and... it had worked. A single blow, a hundred blows, from Dean Winchester should have done nothing to Zachariah yet he bled and gasped and looked afraid.

Castiel's eyes left Zachariah and raised to the ceiling. "Father?" he whispered.

God it felt good to punch Zachariah and have it actually hurt the bastard. He didn't even flinch as Zachariah charged at him. He'd been fighting his whole life, and he doubted the angel had ever had to rely on anything other than superhuman strength. Ducking to avoid his fist, Dean punched him again and brought his knee up against his stomach.

Damn, he was enjoying himself.

He tried to draw breath but nothing happened. His vessel was doubled over, his hand on the floor for balance. His knees threatened to buckle but his own angry kept him up.

"You don't get to toy with me boy!" he howled roughly as he grabbed a bottle off the bar. "I'm take you to Michael if I have to bring you to him in a bucket," he sneered. He swung the bottle at Dean's head..."

Zachariah stared up at Castiel. "How did you do that? How do you still. You thing! You were cut off and you can still do what I can't? What the Hell kind of deal did you make boy. You both been into the demon blood huh?" He looked at Dean, his eyes wild. "No matter, Michael will cleanse you and," he looked at Castiel. "Raphael is ready for a repeat performance with you." He advanced on him them both, to desperate and angry to bide his time now. He wanted this over.

Enough was enough. Dean had gotten his chance to exact some physical vengeance, and Castiel had done as God knew he would - remained close to Dean, prepared to help him and defend him, no matter the personal cost. Now, it was abundantly clear that Zachariah's control was slipping and there were other patrons present, practically tripping over one another in order to get away from the trio, not wanting to be in Zachariah's path when he reached his intended targets. God, however, did precisely the opposite.

She appeared directly in front of Castiel and Dean.

Her expression was a displeased one, a stark contrast to her typical loving smile and eyes that sparkled with a sense of humor that few rarely understood. There was no sparkle to be found now, however. Merely disappointment, sadness, and a steely resolve to stop Zachariah before he could proceed a step further.

Which is precisely what she did. Not with her Will, though, as one might expect. No, God instead raised her own arm as he reached for Dean and Castiel, and grasped his wrist with her small hand. Although she was in a rather tiny built human vessel, her grip was ironclad. No one, not angel nor demon, could hope to break free lest she chose to release them. And she had no intention of releasing Zachariah just yet. Instead she merely held onto his wrist, staving off any attempt he might have of grabbing either the human or angel who now stood behind her.

Meeting his gaze, her expression became a stern one. Her voice, when it echoed within his mind, was equally so.

That is enough, Zachariah.

The air was heavy. The voice... he had never heard it before and yet he knew who it belonged to. He froze on the spot, his eyes wide, his mouth open a little in shock.

He hands were raised, fingers clenched in anger. He lowered them instantly and, as if a switch has been thrown, he smiled.

"Father, he breathed. You have returned. "Hallelujah," he said without sarcasm. "Look what I have found for you! The traitor Castiel. And Michael's vessel here with him but, if you are here to stop Lucifer, we have no need to a vessel for Michael so the human can go free, no? At your discretion, of course, My Lord." Zachariah was only concerned about, only believed he would be chastised for, his current minor indiscretion in threatening a human directly. He had been loyal to Heaven, he was not concerned about any of his earlier actions. They had been necessary to protect his Father's kingdom. He was at no risk here. He could not resist shooting Castiel a smug glance. Now he would pay for the trouble, the humilation, he had cause Zachariah.

Dean just smirked quietly as God appeared, shooting Castiel an amused look. It was fucking hilarious to listen to Zachariah. The guy sure did bring delusional to a whole new level. Did he actually think God believed this bullshit?

"Hey, Lady," he said with a grin that was equal parts fond and familiar. "Looking good. Was wondering when you'd show up...me and Cas tried to save you some fun." Oh, yes, Zachariah. Dean and God? Totally on good terms. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, douchebag.

She wasn't invited to be here, actually in fact she had been given an order to stay away. The voice echoed in her head and she smiled staying perched in the darkness so no one was aware of her presence. "I did say I would sit in the back and root for you, just in case you need me." She whispered tilting her head as she saw God arrive.

She waited to watch the fun as she tried to imagine the look on their face with the up coming events. She would not interupt until she was spoken to come out and play.

Zachariah looked horrified. His face became a mask of righteous anger as he glared at Dean. “How dare you speak to The Lord with such familiarity? I knew you were incapable of showing respect to me but this is beyond comprehension. Now get down on your knees and hope Our Father chooses to forgive you.”

He looked back to God. “I am sorry, my Lord. He has always been a crude being in my experience.” He actually managed to look scandalised and vaguely smug at the same time.

Castiel almost felt sorry for Zachariah. So much had happened in this place that changed everything and Zachariah was unaware of any of it but, then, on balance, that seemed fair.

Castiel watched God, Dean, Zachariah his expression blank as if waiting for something to happen so he would know which to wear, as if there was none to match the power of what he was feeling. Whatever happened next it would be just, it would be right, it would be deserved.

Castiel believed Zachariah believed in his cause but his methods and motivations caused Castiel considerable doubt. Blackmail and bullying were not appropriate behaviour for angels but Castiel's objections were more personal than that.

Zachariah had taken authority that was their Father's and used it against Dean and himself. He had taken Castiel's loyalty and trust and turned it on His Father's creation.

He had betrayed their Father.

Castiel watched, his words unsaid as he waited for the right time to say them.

God would have smiled at Dean's greeting, her own likely as familiar. Zachariah, however, chose to speak up again. Personally, she was getting a little sick of that.

Zachariah, she all but sighed his name. This time, she allowed Castiel to hear what she had to 'say', as well as Dean. No one else - and only him due to the thoughts not being heard so much as being known. Immediate understanding that they were there and what they meant.

It was tricky, but it was a loophole around that whole pesky head explosion issue.

No sooner had his name been murmured was she moving closer to him, releasing her grip on his wrist and instead reaching upward. Her fingers wrapped around his throat and her expression hardened.

I. She picked him up off the ground - as far over her head as was possible. Said.

She spun with him, one heel on her flip flop squeaking lightly against the floor before she swung her arm back then released. As Zachariah was tossed effortlessly through the wall, the last word echoed around them.

Enough!

She wanted him out of the bar. She wanted him several buildings away. Where there weren't any humans, no one in harm's way aside from Zachariah himself.

It was time he knew her Wrath.

One moment he had been apologising to God for Dean's rudeness, the next he was flying through the air, flying so fast he could not gather his wings behind him.

His flight was finally stopped by a white-walled office building. He smacked into it a a 45 degree angle, limbs everywhere. He bounced off and slid down the outside of the building, hitting the street below 4.3 seconds later.

Zachariah had never been so confused as he lifted his head slowly. "What... why?" he managed to cough out.

As soon as Zachariah had crashed through the wall of the bar, God spoke again. This time, to Castiel, although her gaze remained on the hole she'd created - or, perhaps, the angel flying through the building now visible through the gaping hole.

Come along, God's voice was considerably softer. Far more gentle than it had been mere seconds before. The wall was instantly repaired and, in the blink of an eye, God was gone.

She reappeared where Zachariah had fallen, just as he was coughing out his question. God merely arched an eyebrow in response for a long moment.

Tell me, Zachariah, what gives you the right to circumvent free will? Her tone was casual yet carried an edge to it. As though she were barely able to keep her anger in check.

Calmly she reached down, grasping him by the front of his shirt, and lifting him clear off the ground. Setting him back down on his feet, God released him. Her arms crossed over her chest as she peered up at him.

I'm waiting, she reminded him.

Castiel followed his Father without a moment's pause for thought. He took Dean's arm and brought him with them, knowing he would want to be there until the very end. He made sure not to pass in front of God. His Father must arrive there first.

He took his place behind him when they arrived, watched Zachariah bleed on the ground. Zachariah bleed.

He held his tongue.

"I never- when did I... I did it all for you, Father, for Heaven. It was too much for us, to run everything without you. They needed guidance and so I gave and he," he pointed at Dean,
"was selfish. Thought only of himself over the whole of creation. I had to do something." He looked desperate, pleading with his eyes. He knew he had misread the situation but he did not accept he had done anything wrong.

"Lucifer was walking free and the only way to stop him was being blocked by one man's cowardice. I had to do something. Father, don't you understand? Lucifer had to be stopped. It was the only way." He wiped a fleck of blood from his eye as he looked askance at his Father.

He had every intention of holding his tongue. It was his Father's turn to speak but then he said that word. Castiel's whole body tensed into one giant knot. He didn't mean to but he stepped forward. "Dean is NOT a coward," he snapped. "He just knew when he was being used and decided he did not wish to be. You tried to harm him many times and it was never your right. You will harm him no more. I will not leave him to you. You cannot hurt me or Dean. You whining bitch."

Castiel stopped to take a breath. He looked from Zachariah to Dean to his Father. He seemed surprised he had said anything at all. He stepped back and fell silent.

Dean stared at Castiel for a moment, awed both by the automatic defense of his character and the last comment. It reminded him of how Cas had been when they had faced Raphael. He had to admit that seeing Cas stand up to an archangel, and now to Zachariah, was pretty damn impressive. "Go Cas!" he said with a proud grin.

Then he turned his attention to Zachariah. "I did everything I could to stop Lucifer from rising," he growled. "I did things I never should have had to...I lost good people and I was willing to die to stop him from ever getting out. But you lying bastards never wanted me to stop that. You wanted him to get out so you could have your fucking pissing contest! So don't call me a coward just because I want to find another way besides giving in to you lying, manipulative jackasses. As far as I'm concerned, there are exactly two angels who have ever given me a reason to trust them, and you definitely aren't one of them."

His eyes hardened. "Don't you fucking get it?" he asked. "It never had to come to this! We could have stopped Lucifer if you had just been honest for one damn second. Because of you, he's out and he's destroying humanity. That humanity that God charged you with protecting. So, if that makes me selfish...if that makes me a coward? I'd sure as hell rather be that than be anything like you!"

God remained silent, allowing both Castiel and Dean to say what they felt. She was proud of Castiel and his immediate defense of Dean, as well as somewhat amused at the choice words he'd chosen to call Zachariah. With Dean, it was much of what she had expected, although it saddened her greatly to hear the words that told of the damage Zachariah's meddling had caused.

When they had finished, God's voice wasn't overly harsh but it lacked the gentle feel to it that it'd had when she spoke to Castiel and Dean in the bar. Your accusers have spoken, Zachariah.

It was painfully obvious that she wasn't going to allow him to toss the blame off himself, onto the others present. In fact, most of his defense was what she had expected, although one thing in particular stuck out. She decided to address it first.

You questioned whether or not I understand your plight. She shook her head slightly. A breeze blew across the area, her hair fluttering lightly at the ends. A sigh, from the Almighty. Her eyes were saddened as she gazed upon him.

Your troubles were imagined ones, she finally told him. It would never have come to pass if you hadn't decided to involve yourself.

God turned, stepping away from him. Away from them all. Her gaze went up to the building they stood in front of. This world will someday fall to Lucifer, she confided in them. Turning her head, she took in Dean, Castiel, and Zachariah all in one look. He will claim this place as his own, and those who suffer beneath him will be free to roam an Earth that is no longer populated by the innocent and just. The question isn't if this will come to pass, but when. And you-

She was instantly in front of Zachariah. It is because of you, and others like you, Zachariah, that Lucifer has come to be free now. Now, when My World is ripe with sin. Now, when his grip will be at its most powerful. Now, before humanity has fully re-discovered My Existence.

God shook her head. And still, you attempt to defend your actions. You presumed to know me, Zachariah. To know what I know. To see all I see. You presumed to guess at the actions of your Creator, guess at things you will never comprehend.

As she spoke, the skies above them seemed to darken even more. Thunder boomed overhead, shaking the very windows in the building by which they stood. The ground beneath their feet trembled ever so slightly as well. She stepped closer, her words carrying a sense of finality as she whispered them across the minds of all three standing before her, aimed clearly at the one.

Blasphemy is not something I treat lightly.

"Father, I didn't know- I didn't mean to imply you lack the ability to understand but we did not know if you were able to see what was happening. We were alone and it was frightening. We just wanted it over," he backed away from God.

"Is that so wrong?" Zachariah's tone was desperate. Desperate enough to use attack as a form of defence.

"You lest us! You left us alone to do something we were never made to do! Your job. Someone had to take that role in your place. What would have happened if we had not? Castiel was shielded from the worst of it, all the junior angels were. Maybe that was a mistake, to keep him in the dark. Maybe that was my fault. He was confused by what he found out in bits and pieces. Please go easy on him. I was wrong for that but I believed I was doing the..." Zachariah stopped. He couldn't finished the sentence. He could not lie to his Father's face. He knew what he did he did with doubt his Father's approval. He knew he had gotten to the point where he hoped his Father wouldn't come back because he doubted he would get his Father's approval. He did not regret what he had done. He regretted getting caught.

"Father, please," he dropped to his knees. "Please forgive me. I made a mistake."
He lowered his head, his body trembling under the blackened sky.

Castiel looked at the sky, his Father, then back to Zachariah. He was horrified when Zachariah started attacking their Father. It was beyond Castiel's comprehension. He willed Zachariah silent. Zachariah had lied to him, tortured Dean, cost them both almost everything and still he wish for him to survive. Despite everything else he was Castiel's brother.
And so he willed for Zachariah to stop before he went to far, if it wasn't already too late.

If there was one redeeming comment in all of Zachariah's panic-induced rant, it was his inability to lie directly to the Lord's face. Had he done so, not even God was entirely positive just how she might have reacted. However even what she had planned now, as unpleasant as it might be, wouldn't have come close to what she would have done had he finished that sentence.

Still. Aside from that one part - and perhaps a small amount of him also taking Castiel's own fate into mind - there wasn't a bit of his speech that was placing him on better terms. Not any of it had changed her mind, or her decision. Not even when he finally fell to his knees and began to show her the respect she deserved, did God truly consider another option.

She knew, of course, that what she was about to do was going to cause Castiel to feel... uncertain, to put it mildly. She also knew the pain it would cause her, as it always did to punish one of her own. However above all else, God knew what would happen if she didn't deal with Zachariah, here and now, and she simply couldn't allow her own feelings, or those of even someone as devoted to her as Castiel, to sway her judgment.

No. Zachariah had to be stopped. Right here. Right now. Before it truly was too late.

You were left to watch over humanity, Zachariah, a task you were once quite capable of doing. You instead abused that position and attempted to bring about the end of the world. Her words were soft, washing across the minds of those present, hiding the steely resolve that laid beneath them, for the time being. Crouching down, she took his chin in her palm and raised his head until he was looking into her face. Her eyes shone with sorrow and love as she added, I am sorry it has come to this, Zachariah.

Releasing him, she rose to her full height. Her arms dangled at her sides, her gaze locked firmly on him. Castiel, she let his name hang in the air for a moment, before her expression hardened slightly even as her voice remained all but gentle. Please ensure Dean's ears are properly covered.

Castiel frowned a little in confusion. He did not know why he needed to protect Dean's hearing, only that he did and he did so with no spoken question. He took the few steps to where Dean was standing, lifted his hands and placed then firmly over Dean's ears, cupping his hands to form as deal. He pressed against Dean's head with considerable pressure. He did not know what he was protecting Dean from but if it was something of his Father's doing he could take no chance.

He looked past Dean, over at Zachariah and his Father, his face tense with concern.

Zachariah could not find his words anymore, his silver tongue silenced by terror. He wanted to ask what his Father meant. What had it come to? Was he to fall? Was his Grace to be removed? Was to to live as a human? The prospect was horrible but there was a hope in it. Anna had regained her Grace after all and if that slip could do it surely he could too.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad.

Then God moved away and Castiel was ordered to cover Dean's ears. Doesn't He mean his eyes? It's the eyes that were at risk from the uncovered Grace of an angel. Zachariah started in confusion. What was his Father going to do?

Dean couldn't really bring himself to feel sorry for Zachariah. The guy had brought it on himself, trying to destroy the world and threatening people who meant the most to Dean. He'd never really been the forgiving sort, and as far as he could tell, Zach didn't merit it. Still, he did feel bad for Cas, having to see this. And God, having to do it. He sort of understood now, that God had a really crappy job.

Suddenly, Castiel's hands were covering his ears, and he was confused and a little worried. What was going to happen now? On reflex, his hands covered Castiel's ears just in case, as if that would do any good. It was an instinctive, protective urge...that was probably really fucking stupid.

While Castiel wasn't in any danger over what was about to come, the fact that Dean cared enough to actually cover Castiel's ears was quite a sweet gesture and certainly one that God noticed. She didn't comment on it, however, being far too focused on Zachariah at the moment. She doubted he'd try to flee - not even the Morningstar had been willing to do that until the very end of the War - but she also wasn't going to let anything deter her from dealing with him swiftly and justly.

So the moment Dean's ears (and now, Castiel's as well) were covered, she stepped closer to Zachariah. With sorrow shining in her eyes, she pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek. Her voice was little more than a murmur as she passed her judgment.

I do wish you had chosen a different path. You always did have great potential, Zachariah.

Stepping back once again, she drew in a deep breath, double checked to make sure no humans were close enough to suffer from what she was about to do, then opened her mouth.

And spoke.

Granted, on the mortal coil, it simply came out as a roar. Far louder than any other sound conceivable, it rattled the windows in the buildings around them and shook the ground under their feet. It was the pure essence of the Lord Almighty and something the likes of which few had ever encountered.

Were Zachariah human, his head would have ruptured at the sound. Were Dean's ears not covered, his would have done the same. However, Dean's ears were covered and Zachariah was hardly human. So while one of her chosen ones was safe, the object of her wrath was not.

Unfortunately, for him at least, what she was doing wasn't a painless endeavor. It wasn't nearly as clean-cut as when she'd dealt with Bartleby. No, as Zachariah was inhabiting a human host, first she had to separate the two. That was simple enough, and solely done by her Will alone. By the time the windows in the building had begun to crack from her Voice, it was finished.

Then, however, came the truly terrible part. For God hadn't decided to send Zachariah to Hell, nor did she intend to remove his Grace. No, she knew he was far too crafty and ambitious for either of those to happen, and she certainly wasn't going to make the same miscalculation by banishing yet another angel to the mortal coil only for him to find a loophole to return Home. No, her choice was an obvious one. Far from simple, but obvious.

Zachariah had to be obliterated; taken completely out of existence.

Which is just what she set out to do. She kept his Grace intact, although shielded from Dean's eyes, even after his human shell was stripped away and sent back to his proper reality. She raised her Voice to a new decibel next and watched, with pain filling her very essence, as slowly but surely bits and pieces of Zachariah began to burn before quickly turning to ash.

By the time she was finished, there would be nothing left of him, aside from the memories he'd left behind in those he'd harmed and tried to use. And the love of a Creator who truly did wish her angel had chosen a different path, if only to spare him the pain of his punishment before nothingness consumed him entirely.

It was the kiss that finally told him.

He didn't beg. He didn't ask. He just let his vessel release a few tears. He had let his Father down. He had caused Him pain. Too late he realised this was his true punishment. Too late he realised that was the very last thing he ever wanted to do.

Just in time he realised that it was the last thing he ever would.

Castiel stared, ridged, paralysed. His face fell open as his hands fell away from Dean's ears.

He backed away from all of them. His Grace expanded in a wordless scream only his Father, his siblings, could hear. He backed away and kept backing away, his terror filling the space around him, invisible and white hot.

He back away and backed away and then he was gone.

Dean stared. He hadn't expected that, but then again he understood. He was somehow more comfortable with the idea of a wrathful God than a sweet and friendly God. It fit the image he had grown up with better. Still, he was starting to think that maybe this wasn't the idea of God that Cas was comfortable with. Definitely not, as Cas backed away in a terrified panic.

"Cas!" he shouted, as the angel disappeared. Then he looked at God, silently asking her to help. He had no idea where Cas had gone and, unlike the angel, he couldn't just disappear and reappear wherever he was.

God's eyes slid closed as Castiel's Grace assaulted her senses and sent a sharp stab of pain through her very essence. She didn't watch his retreat. She didn't need to. She had known it was likely to happen and, now that it was, didn't need to turn and see it to feel it taking place. His terror was almost tangible... and was due to her.

She re-opened her eyes when Dean shouted, turning to face him. Her eyes shone with sorrow, with pain for the loss she felt and the terror Castiel was experiencing. Giving a nod of her head at his silent plea for her help, God raised an arm and pointed back in the direction of his apartment.

It was an easily understood command. Go. I'll take care of Castiel.

And then God was gone as well, to do precisely that.
