WHAT: Alice takes a tumble down the rabbit hole and winds up in Colligo.
WHEN: Mid-morning
WHERE: The Grand Library; Angela Petrelli's room
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

"... Banana?"

The teen's voice was a low, hoarse mumble as she slowly began to come to her senses. She wasn't sure quite what had happened so she stayed where she was, the cool, hard floor pressing into her cheek and her legs twisted at an odd angle that would have made her father complain about his back for days afterward.

Her father. Alice Shaw's breath hitched as the simple thought of the man was enough to make her memories slowly begin to resurface in her fog-filled mind. Doctor Suresh had slapped her and now... now her father was dead. Her mother too. And Angela, her beloved older sister...

Actually, Alice remembered with a start, Angela hadn't been there at the time. She'd snuck out with those boys and had told Alice to stay where she was. She'd said it would be safe. It was only after that fact that Doctor Suresh had wanted to talk to her, and everything had promptly fallen apart.

Then, as her memories returned, the small girl became aware of one thing with absolute startling clarity. The last thing she remembered was hiding under the porch in Coyote Sands as gunfire rang out around her. This, wherever this was, was most certainly not the middle of the Arizona desert and there wasn't a single gunshot to be heard.

That was all it took to make Alice raise her head and cautiously peer around. Fear knotted in her gut at her unfamiliar surroundings, the books barely registering as panic began to seep through her veins. "H-Hello?" she called out, hesitant at first then louder as she climbed to her feet. "Hello? Is anybody there?"

Her only answer, at least at first, was complete and utter silence. Just around the time Alice was starting to question if she'd possibly died and this was some version of Heaven she'd never been told about, she realized what the real story was. And very nearly began to weep at the thought.

She'd been caught. Somehow, someway, they'd found her under that porch and now she was stuck in some lab to be tested on for the rest of her life. Those boys had been right. The government wasn't trying to help them and, because she hadn't stayed like Angela had told her to do, she wasn't safe anymore either.

Blinking back sudden tears born from sheer terror, the girl wrapped her arms around her midsection and turned in a complete circle to look around. She was opening her mouth to call out yet again for someone when, without warning, she was lifted clear off her feet. A screech passed her lips and she kicked her feet wildly, arms twisting as best they could as the sudden statue come to life began carrying her toward the doors that she'd never even noticed until that very second.

A heartbeat later, Alice was sitting on the steps of the Grand Library with something dropped into her lap that was unlike anything she'd ever remembered seeing before. Curiosity warred with fear as she stared down at the unknown, electrical device and wondered if it was some kind of bomb or something. As she hesitantly began to turn it over in her hands, she paid little attention to the gathering of stormclouds overhead.

Not that she could have stopped them even if she'd noticed them. Alice may be the one responsible for the sudden, erradic change in the weather, but she was far from able to turn it on or off by force of will alone. Not when she was as confused and frightened as she was at this exact moment in time.

Alice stiffened at the approach of someone else, the wind picking up in large gusts that made her hair blow about and caused her to squint her eyes a bit. She just barely managed to stop herself from jumping to her feet and running from the stranger, instead tightening her hands into small fists as she buried them in her lap and turning to him with a frown that was filled with distrust and wariness.

"Where am I?" she asked, first and foremost. Alice didn't answer his questions right away, not wanting to give away too much in case this was some kind of trap. Besides, he was a stranger and she wasn't supposed to even speak to a stranger. "Who are you?"

A large crack sounded as lightning struck the roof of a nearby building and Alice forced herself to calm her breathing, fists growing tighter until she could feel her fingernails biting into her palms. The wind began to slowly die down and the rumble of thunder fell silent, although the clouds overhead remained dark and ominous.

Interesting. Very interesting. Frowning softly, he tucked his hands into his lap, hunching his shoulders in order to seem small, less intimidating than he was normally, offering her a very small and supportive smile, "My name's Nathan. As for where you are, I can't really tell you that. I don't know any better than you do," He said, turning his attention up to the sky with a curious gaze as the lightening, wind, and thunder seemed to wax and wane with the tension in this girl's body.

Interesting.

"Do you need a hand?" He asked, turning back to her with a curious and concerned gaze before reaching out with a frown to gently scrub a smudge of dirt off of her cheek, his breath catching momentarily at another swirling in his head before he was able to clamp down on it. "You look a fright."

Alice did her best not to flinch away from the touch, part of her worried he was going to slap her as Doctor Suresh had done. She knew that wasn't fair, some part of her knew that Doctor Suresh had only done it to try and calm her down, but it didn't change the trauma that had taken place afterward. Or the wariness she now felt for anyone who claimed to want to help.

Still, Nathan didn't slap her. In fact, he seemed to have a real desire to do as he was offering... up to an including cleaning dirt off her face. Which immediately made her realize just how much of a mess she probably looked, between the sand storm and hiding underneath the porch in Coyote Sands. Were the situation a little more normal, she might almost be embarrassed. Especially when she noticed that the shirt of her dress, not to mention her knees, were covered in streaks of dirt as well.

"I was hiding," she admitted softly, brow furrowed as she studied her lap as though it held all the answers to the universe. Slowly she peered up at him. "They were shooting everyone so I hid." Exhaling a shaky breath, she glanced around before re-focusing on the man beside her.

"I'm Alice," she finally offered her name. "And thank you. I think... I could probably use some help."

Shooting everyone? A quiet horror gripped his gut as his mind swirled. Just where could she have come from? Part of him didn't want to think about it too much. The fact that she was safe was all that mattered right now. A soft sadness lingered in his eyes, however, as he stood and offered his hands out to her, "I guess the first thing that we do is find somewhere to get you cleaned up," He said, glancing up at the sky with a slight chuckle. "Though, it seems like if we wait a few minutes, we won't even have to go anywhere to. That's the quickest cloud burst I've ever seen gather," He said before looking back down at her.

"There's a housing complex not far from here. The PDA that they gave you should have your room assignment on it," He said. "Even if this is a bit of an odd place, it's quiet, at least. Which is a nice change," He said.

There wasn't really anything else that could be said about it. He didn't have any answers. He couldn't reassure her that it was all going to be all right. He didn't even know what sort of situation she had extracted herself from (even if part of him thought that he understood just how afraid she had been). But they had to start somewhere.

There was a brief moment of hesitation before she placed her hands in his, rising to her feet. Alice didn't comment on the storm, although a slight aversion of her gaze and flush of her cheeks probably was enough to give her away if he was paying close attention. Maybe he wasn't, though, or maybe he would think it was something else entirely. Either way, he'd yet to pull out a gun and start shooting at her, nor had he drawn a needle to stab her with. So far he was leaps and bounds above those who had been in charge of the place she'd just come from.

Peering up at him, Alice did her best to school her expression into one that wasn't quite so telling. She couldn't keep the mild look of confusion from her face as he spoke, though. "PDA?" she questioned. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out the strange device she'd been given. "Is that what this thing is? I've never seen anything like it before."

She'd spent maybe three minutes messing with it before having given up on figuring it out. To hear that it was something of use was definitely confusing for her since she had no idea how something she couldn't operate could ever be truly useful.

"Really?" He asked, a quiet confusion on his face. He had assumed that her clothing had just been done up in an old style, but now, it was hard to say as he moved, kneeling next to her and reaching out, moving the PDA so that she could see it as he pushed a button, turning it on and a mess of options spring up onto the screen, the colorful icons popping up as each option loaded.

"Personal Digital Assistant," Nathan said. "It's sort of like a pocket computer, an advanced datebook," He said, offering her a bit of a grin. "They do get a bit of time to get the hang of, but you're young still. You'll have more than enough time to figure it out," He said with a chuckle before scrolling through the options that he'd found his room under, laughing slightly as her assignment popped up.

"Well, how about that. You're in the room right next to mine. Guess it's a good thing that I ran into you, then."

"What happened to pencil and paper?" Alice couldn't help but ask, fascination shining in her eyes as she peered down at the screen when he made it come to life. Her gaze flickered back to Nathan and she smiled lightly at the room assignment. "That's good. At least I'll know someone nearby." Honestly, she was a bit surprised she had her own room. Then again she didn't know that for a fact, just assumed based on his previous comment that there weren't many people here. Yet.

Looking back at the PDA, Alice once again felt amazement at the sudden leap in technology. Televisions were still just making their way into most living rooms, when she was from. Now people carried them around in their pockets.

"It's not the 1960's anymore, is it?" she suddenly asked, large brown eyes turning back up to Nathan.

There was no fear in her voice as she asked the question. That was likely due because she had a feeling she knew what the answer was going to be. No way had something like this been around and the government been able to keep it a secret. That just simply wasn't possible. And while yes, it was frightening to think she was not only in some strange place but was in another time - like something out of some sort of science fiction story that her father didn't want her reading - Alice also knew that this place was better than where she'd just left. The thought helped her stay calm, even as she mused aloud, "My sister is going to be so worried..."

Nathan offered her a reassuring smile at the question about their temporal state. It was one that part of him had been expecting. If people could come back from the dead here, why not being pulled from the wrong time periods? Shaking his head, Nathan looked out at the city before sighing, "Part of me wonder if we're even still on Earth," He said, half joking as he stood and offered her his arm. "But no, we're not. Last I knew, it was 2007, over forty years past the sixties. I was born in the sixties, actually. 1964. Ma always said she never expected to have kids so young, but when something good happens, you just let it happen," He said, grinning down at her.

"But I'm afraid you've tumbled down the rabbit hole, young Alice," He said with a half teasing grin. "But at least you're in good company. We're not all mad here," He said with a wink.

Alice took his arm and gave a nod of her head. "I thought as much. You were born three years in the future, for me. It might take me a bit longer to catch on to that... PDA, I think."

Although she'd offered him a smile before, at the mention of Alice in Wonderland her smile easily doubled in size. "I love that story!" she exclaimed happily. "I've read the book more times than I can possibly count."

She would have said more, likely about the story itself, when she realized that she didn't have her book with her, here. Her expression faltered as she glanced toward the steps before sighing heavily. "I must have left it behind," she muttered. Which, of course, she knew was definitely the case. She certainly hadn't had time to grab it while hiding from the soldiers.

The sorrow passed quickly enough as Alice brushed the sense of loss away. All things considered, it was rather silly to be upset over a book. Then again, the stress of the situation hadn't really caught up with her. Nor had the realization that her parents were gone and never coming back... and that she might not ever see her sister again.

"Wow," Nathan said as he looked down at Alice with a soft surprise as he did the math in his head, ghosts of memories swimming in between each other as he tried to figure out just where that nagging in the back of his mind that there was something about this that was familiar and odd and made him feel like he needed to say something. But he just couldn't put a finger on it. "You're not much younger than my Ma, then," He said with a slightly nervous and at the same time amused laugh. "That is...surreal to think about."

Nathan offered her a deep smile at her comment before nodding, "Ma used to read it to Peter and I when we were kids. I think Pete liked it a lot more than I did, but I never was a very literary mind," He said, chuckling. "More math, science, politics, and government in this head," He said, shaking out his mind at the twinge in his gut that that statement was somehow a lie. Not very literary just struck him as...wrong.

"Sounds like your mom has good taste, then," Alice replied with a smile. "My sister used to read it to me, until I got big enough to read it to myself." She studied him for a minute, somehow having a hard time seeing him as being involved in the government. She supposed that had a lot to do with her current feelings toward the government, though. Surely they couldn't still be as awful as they'd turned out to be in her time, right?

"So, you're in politics, then?" she finally asked in as casual of a tone as she could muster, figuring the only way to know the answer to her unvoiced question was to start with learning more about this man and just how closely tied to the government he was. Idly, she wondered if she should be more worried than she was - if maybe she really was re-captured and he was some sort of decoy sent in to lull her into a false sense of security. That seemed a little far-fetched, however. She was just a thirteen year old girl. She wasn't nearly important enough to put that much energy into.

"A Senator," He said with a slight smile as he looked down at her. Somehow, he could just...tell that she wasn't comfortable with the idea of him being with the government. He couldn't really blame her, after everything. Even if it all seemed like a bad dream to him anymore, his mind's attempt to forget his mistakes, he still understood that he had the capacity to screw things out that much worse than anyone else because of his connections just as much as he had the ability to make things better because of them. "Well, junior Senator. But it doesn't make much of a difference here," He said.

No. Here, he was just Nathan Petrelli: son, brother, father. And really, that didn't sound all that bad to him. If only Pete would show up, then maybe he could stop worrying himself to death trying to figure out why some of them were there and others of them weren't.

"Do you mind if I ask why you were hiding? I mean, what you were hiding from?" He asked. God, why did he feel like he should know this?

Senator. That was better than Federal Agent. Far, far better. Almost without realizing it, Alice relaxed a little more. They wouldn't send a Senator to round her up, or pretend to be her friend, or whatever it was she partially thought they might be trying to do. Not to mention, if she wanted to make sure nothing like Coyote Sands ever happened again, having someone like a Senator - even a Junior one - would definitely help. Granted he wasn't from her time and therefore wouldn't be able to actually do anything even if she made it back, but he could give her a few ideas on how to best proceed. He knew how these things worked. All she knew was how to make it rain.

"The government," she replied at his question, zero hesitation in her voice. It was now or never. Either she saw this through and found out if he was someone she could trust or she didn't. As she drew in another breath, Alice already knew what it was she was going to do.

"They found out about us... about people who could do things. Special things. They said they could help us." There was far too much bitterness in her voice for one so young, and brown eyes that had been jaded to the true horrors mankind was capable of peered up at him unflinchingly as she told her tale.

"They took us all someplace they said would be safe. It was, at first. Then it all turned bad, so quickly. The doctor that was running it all slapped me when I ran, and my father stepped in, a-and they shot him. After that, they started shooting and just... didn't stop." By the time she'd finished speaking, her voice was but a whisper and Alice's gaze had fallen to the ground as she struggled to hold back her tears.

"They lied," she spat the words out bitterly, turning her tearful gaze toward Nathan once more. "They said they were going to help us but they lied."

It hit him like a load of bricks exactly what she was talking about. All of that digging, out in the desert. His mother had explained after the fact to him because he'd missed the majority of the stuff that had happened because he had been busy trying to make sure that Claire was all right with everything and trying to fix things with Peter. Her explanation provoked a heavy frown as he peered at the ground at they walked, nodding slowly. If he had known, if he had had any idea that something like this had happened before, what the end result would have been, he was sure that he would have never talked to the government.

"It's easier to lure people with honey than it is with poison," He said quietly, a softness in his voice as he looked down at her, reaching out slowly to wipe a tear off of her cheek. "The government has a habit of lying to the people, Alice. Whenever they think that they know what's better for them than they do. But the truth is that they hardly ever understand what is really best. And they certainly never understand things that they couldn't possibly know what are like."

"They killed my parents," she stated. Her voice was an odd combination of anger and sadness, yet the words were spoken flatly. It was clear she had zero intentions of trying to understand why the government had done what they'd done. All she knew was that they'd lied and, because of that, her family was dead.

"I don't know what happened to my sister. I don't know if I'll see her again. She said she'd be right back but if she did show up they would have just shot her too." She stopped there, nausea welling up inside of her at the thought. She couldn't lose everyone. She just couldn't. Even if she was stuck in this place and might never know the fate of her sister, she couldn't think about that fate having been the same as their parents.

Thunder rumbled once again in the background, a wind coming seemingly out of nowhere that caused her skirt to billow lightly around her legs. "We didn't do anything wrong," she said when she trusted herself to speak again. "We never hurt anyone. My parents were good people and my sister was worried about the prom and they treated us like we were some kind of... communists!"

There was a large flash of lightning that struck the ground just thirty or so yards ahead of them. Alice flinched and quickly squeezed her eyes shut, trying to regain control of her emotions again. It took a few moments but finally the storm seemed to dissipate. By the time she'd re-opened her eyes, the skies weren't quite back to their previous brilliant blue but the clouds were starting to disappear.

"I hate them," she finally said, glaring at the ground as though it were to blame for all of this. "I know I shouldn't. Hating is wrong and isn't a healthy way to handle situations, but I do. I hate them for what they did."

Nathan's eyes went wide at the strike of lightening, staring at where it landed before looking down at Alice and sighing, pushing a heavy focus into himself to try and keep it controlled as he took a step forward, and another, hovering just a few inches off of the ground. Oddly, he didn't feel as though he might actually be able to push himself higher than that. But that didn't matter right now.

"Some things change," He said as he looked down at her. "It takes time, but things change," He said before lowering himself back down to the ground in front of her and sighing as he raised a hand and pushed it nervously through his hair. He still wasn't used using his ability in front of strangers. Hell, he hardly ever used it around people that he knew, unless it was necessary. But this was a situation that it needed to be displayed. She had to know that she wasn't alone here.

Alice hadn't really been sure how Nathan might react once he figured out that she was the one who was definitely responsible for the storms. She had thought he might be frightened, or possibly angry. Maybe he wouldn't even believe it was her who was doing it. Whatever might have crossed her mind at his reaction, though, him displaying his own ability was not it.

"You... can fly?" she whispered, her eyes wide as she peered up at him. For a moment, she simply stared at him in shock, her own upset temporarily forgotten in the face of this new, startling news. As her brain slowly began to assimilate it, however, for the first time in a very long time, Alice felt hope stir within her.

He was a Senator for the United States. A member of their own government. And he could fly. If that didn't say something about the future and what it might hold she didn't know what would. A member of Congress had an ability. Clearly, they had come leaps and bounds since the days of rounding everyone up and forcing them into the middle of the desert to be slaughtered like cattle.

"My whole family has abilities," Nathan said as he settled a hand on her shoulder with a soft smile. "My father could take the abilities of others. My brother can mimic them. My mother has dreams that tell her the future," He said as they started walking back towards the housing complex. It had to be something that was hard to get her head wrapped around, the government going from rounding people up to electing one of them, but he thought it was better to just leave out the negative parts of the story, give her the hope that she needed.

Things were going to get better now that things had been smoothed over, the Company had been re-established, and everything that he had almost destroyed had been returned to how they had been.

"And yes, I can fly," Nathan said with a slightly sheepish grin. "I'm going to take a stab in the dark here. You can control the weather?"

My mother has dreams that tell her the future.

The words washed over Alice like a bucket of cold water, causing her breath to catch in her throat and her eyes to widen. Distantly, she heard Nathan admit to his own ability and ask about hers. Slowly, she nodded her head in agreement. However, when she tried to speak, she found her throat was too dry to even attempt it.

Finally she managed it, although her voice came out little more than a raspy whisper. "My sister used to have dreams that told her things. She always said they were confusing and sometimes hard to understand, but she definitely saw the future." She blinked, peering up at Nathan as though she was seeing him for the first time. "What... what's your mother's name?"

Nathan looked down at Alice with a quiet confusion before what she said rocked his memories. They had gone to Coyote Sands to find his mother's sister, to find Alice, but... It couldn't be. It had to be just some strange coincidence. But still... There was no reason for him to try and tell her that it would be better for his mother to talk to her about this. It would be easier to make sure whether or not they were actually on the right track before anything else was brought into the mix.

"Angela," He said, blinking at Alice for a moment, waiting to see her reaction. "Angela Petrelli. I can't say that I know her maiden name. We never talked about her family. It was always just Pop's side."

"Shaw," Alice answered simply. "Her maiden name was Shaw. Angela Shaw." She had a good idea why they never spoke of her family, too, considering as far as Angela was concerned she likely had no family left. After all, their parents were dead and as for Alice... well, Alice could only assume that Angela must have believed her to have died in the shootout as well. Although how she could think that without there being a body was a mystery, but then again, this was all one giant, illogical mess now wasn't it? So it stood to reason that there would be other things that couldn't simply be explained away.

"It's her," she stated firmly, knowing it as well as she knew her own name. "Your mother is my sister. They have the same name, the same ability... it's her." She stopped there, trying to calm herself lest she jump too far ahead in her conclusions. Instead she simply stared up at Nathan for a full moment, trying desperately to find some glimpse of her beloved sister in his features.

"Is... is she here?" she finally asked, almost afraid to hear the answer. A 'no', she thought, might very well be more than she could take.

"She's here," Nathan said, a very delicate smile gracing his features as he nodded towards the buildings that they were now in sight of. "She's actually waiting in there for me to get back. I said I'd go out, see if I could figure out whether there was anything else distinguishing about this place. I guess it's a good thing that I did," He said, chuckling as he looked down at Alice.

His aunt was barely older than his sons. He knew that it was often a situation that people truly ended up in, but this was simply baffling. It wasn't at all like those situations whatsoever. And it just begged the label: "Only in the Petrelli family."

"So," He said, offering her a wider grin. "Think we should go and see if we can surprise Ma or what?"

Several emotions assaulted Alice all at once following his answer. The first was relief that he hadn't said his mother wasn't here. The second was doubt. What if she was wrong and this wasn't her Angela? Followed soon after that came nervousness at meeting a sister (provided she was her sister, of course) that she hadn't seen in what, to Angela, would seem like a very long time.

Finally, fear settled over her. Fear that she was wrong and would be heartbroken if that were the case. Fear that Angela really would be her sister but wouldn't want anything to do with her, or would be angry with her for not staying in Coyote Sands. It was irrational, of course, to think such a thing but fear was rarely rational and this was no exception.

After a few seconds of warring with herself, debating on simply saying no and asking to instead be shown to her own room, Alice finally gave a wordless nod. A soft clearing of her throat and she answered him out loud in a voice that sounded much more certain than she really felt.

"Definitely. It isn't often someone gets to surprise her anyway. At least, I never managed it all that well," she answered, the fear fading as she smiled up at her... nephew. That, she decided, was going to take some getting used to.

Nathan chuckled, soft and amused despite the fact that his mind was currently at war with itself trying to realign all of the memories jumbled in his head. Stress. Stress was what it was. That was the only explanation that he could come up with for the fact that his most recent memories seemed to be meshed into an insane ball of twinge that he had to unravel in order to get any any of them. And even then, they weren't exactly crystal clear.

But no matter. Right now, his own memories would settle themselves. There was someone else to worry about at the moment.

"She's not an easy person to surprise, that's for sure," Nathan said with a laugh. He remembered when he and Pete were younger, especially when Peter was little, and he was still hemming around innocence, and they would spend next to forever on a present for her birthday or Mother's Day. She always seemed to know exactly what they had planned.

But she always put up a fair show of being surprised. And she was always honestly delighted.

Alice nodded in agreement, her hopes rising a little higher as yet another thing his mother and her sister had in common became known. It was small, nearly inconsequential, but to her it was an important piece to a puzzle that would have likely become a major focus for her had she been forced to put it all together herself.

Peering up at the building she assumed they were to be housed in, if the signs that labeled it as the housing district were to be believed, the girl swallowed audibly. The hand that she'd taken Nathan's offered arm with tightened ever so slightly against the muscles beneath her fingers. Her expression was wary, eyes filled with uncertainty, as she peered slowly up at the man.

"What if she doesn't want to see me?" she asked. She hated how scared she sounded, how small her voice came out. She couldn't help it though. Now that they were almost there, every doubt she'd tried to ignore came rushing back in full force.

"I wouldn't worry about that," He said, smiling down at her as he felt a soft prick of fear tingling in his gut. That wasn't right. That simply was off. Why was he scared? Ma would be ecstatic even if she would be more confused than he was at the moment. There was no reason to be afraid.

"She'll be happy to see you. I'm sure of it," Nathan said as he lead her to the first room on the first floor in the first building, knocking on the door. "Ma? You in?"
