"... Banana?"

The teen's voice was a low, hoarse mumble as she slowly began to come to her senses. She wasn't sure quite what had happened so she stayed where she was, the cool, hard floor pressing into her cheek and her legs twisted at an odd angle that would have made her father complain about his back for days afterward.

Her father. Alice Shaw's breath hitched as the simple thought of the man was enough to make her memories slowly begin to resurface in her fog-filled mind. Doctor Suresh had slapped her and now... now her father was dead. Her mother too. And Angela, her beloved older sister...

Actually, Alice remembered with a start, Angela hadn't been there at the time. She'd snuck out with those boys and had told Alice to stay where she was. She'd said it would be safe. It was only after that fact that Doctor Suresh had wanted to talk to her, and everything had promptly fallen apart.

Then, as her memories returned, the small girl became aware of one thing with absolute startling clarity. The last thing she remembered was hiding under the porch in Coyote Sands as gunfire rang out around her. This, wherever this was, was most certainly not the middle of the Arizona desert and there wasn't a single gunshot to be heard.

That was all it took to make Alice raise her head and cautiously peer around. Fear knotted in her gut at her unfamiliar surroundings, the books barely registering as panic began to seep through her veins. "H-Hello?" she called out, hesitant at first then louder as she climbed to her feet. "Hello? Is anybody there?"

Her only answer, at least at first, was complete and utter silence. Just around the time Alice was starting to question if she'd possibly died and this was some version of Heaven she'd never been told about, she realized what the real story was. And very nearly began to weep at the thought.

She'd been caught. Somehow, someway, they'd found her under that porch and now she was stuck in some lab to be tested on for the rest of her life. Those boys had been right. The government wasn't trying to help them and, because she hadn't stayed like Angela had told her to do, she wasn't safe anymore either.

Blinking back sudden tears born from sheer terror, the girl wrapped her arms around her midsection and turned in a complete circle to look around. She was opening her mouth to call out yet again for someone when, without warning, she was lifted clear off her feet. A screech passed her lips and she kicked her feet wildly, arms twisting as best they could as the sudden statue come to life began carrying her toward the doors that she'd never even noticed until that very second.

A heartbeat later, Alice was sitting on the steps of the Grand Library with something dropped into her lap that was unlike anything she'd ever remembered seeing before. Curiosity warred with fear as she stared down at the unknown, electrical device and wondered if it was some kind of bomb or something. As she hesitantly began to turn it over in her hands, she paid little attention to the gathering of stormclouds overhead.

Not that she could have stopped them even if she'd noticed them. Alice may be the one responsible for the sudden, erradic change in the weather, but she was far from able to turn it on or off by force of will alone. Not when she was as confused and frightened as she was at this exact moment in time.

"Shaw," Alice answered simply. "Her maiden name was Shaw. Angela Shaw." She had a good idea why they never spoke of her family, too, considering as far as Angela was concerned she likely had no family left. After all, their parents were dead and as for Alice... well, Alice could only assume that Angela must have believed her to have died in the shootout as well. Although how she could think that without there being a body was a mystery, but then again, this was all one giant, illogical mess now wasn't it? So it stood to reason that there would be other things that couldn't simply be explained away.

"It's her," she stated firmly, knowing it as well as she knew her own name. "Your mother is my sister. They have the same name, the same ability... it's her." She stopped there, trying to calm herself lest she jump too far ahead in her conclusions. Instead she simply stared up at Nathan for a full moment, trying desperately to find some glimpse of her beloved sister in his features.

"Is... is she here?" she finally asked, almost afraid to hear the answer. A 'no', she thought, might very well be more than she could take.

"She's here," Nathan said, a very delicate smile gracing his features as he nodded towards the buildings that they were now in sight of. "She's actually waiting in there for me to get back. I said I'd go out, see if I could figure out whether there was anything else distinguishing about this place. I guess it's a good thing that I did," He said, chuckling as he looked down at Alice.

His aunt was barely older than his sons. He knew that it was often a situation that people truly ended up in, but this was simply baffling. It wasn't at all like those situations whatsoever. And it just begged the label: "Only in the Petrelli family."

"So," He said, offering her a wider grin. "Think we should go and see if we can surprise Ma or what?"

Several emotions assaulted Alice all at once following his answer. The first was relief that he hadn't said his mother wasn't here. The second was doubt. What if she was wrong and this wasn't her Angela? Followed soon after that came nervousness at meeting a sister (provided she was her sister, of course) that she hadn't seen in what, to Angela, would seem like a very long time.

Finally, fear settled over her. Fear that she was wrong and would be heartbroken if that were the case. Fear that Angela really would be her sister but wouldn't want anything to do with her, or would be angry with her for not staying in Coyote Sands. It was irrational, of course, to think such a thing but fear was rarely rational and this was no exception.

After a few seconds of warring with herself, debating on simply saying no and asking to instead be shown to her own room, Alice finally gave a wordless nod. A soft clearing of her throat and she answered him out loud in a voice that sounded much more certain than she really felt.

"Definitely. It isn't often someone gets to surprise her anyway. At least, I never managed it all that well," she answered, the fear fading as she smiled up at her... nephew. That, she decided, was going to take some getting used to.

Nathan chuckled, soft and amused despite the fact that his mind was currently at war with itself trying to realign all of the memories jumbled in his head. Stress. Stress was what it was. That was the only explanation that he could come up with for the fact that his most recent memories seemed to be meshed into an insane ball of twinge that he had to unravel in order to get any any of them. And even then, they weren't exactly crystal clear.

But no matter. Right now, his own memories would settle themselves. There was someone else to worry about at the moment.

"She's not an easy person to surprise, that's for sure," Nathan said with a laugh. He remembered when he and Pete were younger, especially when Peter was little, and he was still hemming around innocence, and they would spend next to forever on a present for her birthday or Mother's Day. She always seemed to know exactly what they had planned.

But she always put up a fair show of being surprised. And she was always honestly delighted.

Alice nodded in agreement, her hopes rising a little higher as yet another thing his mother and her sister had in common became known. It was small, nearly inconsequential, but to her it was an important piece to a puzzle that would have likely become a major focus for her had she been forced to put it all together herself.

Peering up at the building she assumed they were to be housed in, if the signs that labeled it as the housing district were to be believed, the girl swallowed audibly. The hand that she'd taken Nathan's offered arm with tightened ever so slightly against the muscles beneath her fingers. Her expression was wary, eyes filled with uncertainty, as she peered slowly up at the man.

"What if she doesn't want to see me?" she asked. She hated how scared she sounded, how small her voice came out. She couldn't help it though. Now that they were almost there, every doubt she'd tried to ignore came rushing back in full force.

"I wouldn't worry about that," He said, smiling down at her as he felt a soft prick of fear tingling in his gut. That wasn't right. That simply was off. Why was he scared? Ma would be ecstatic even if she would be more confused than he was at the moment. There was no reason to be afraid.

"She'll be happy to see you. I'm sure of it," Nathan said as he lead her to the first room on the first floor in the first building, knocking on the door. "Ma? You in?"
