Entry tags:character: buffy summers, character: lucius anguis (dropped), location: anguis house (dropped), thread: complete, |week: 05, ~date: 08/august 06

Who: Lucius and Buffy, possibly Evie at some point as well?
Where: Lucius' Evil Lair of Doom
When: Week 5, Tuesday, Afternoon
Why: Buffy's sneaked out because Ambrose won't let her be a martyr hero to save her best friend's souuuul
Warning: TBD, language, possibly violence

Buffy stared up at the door to Daniel's Evil Lair of Doom, her green eyes narrowed in what she assured herself was steely determination. She had convinced herself that this confrontation, whatever it entailed, was something that she had to do both for Daniel and for Evie. And maybe, somewhere inside, she wanted it for herself too. She was afraid of what she'd find, but it wasn't something she could run from anymore.

Ambrose hadn't been on board, and that made it all the harder to do what she was doing. She wasn't happy to be openly doing something he'd expressly asked her not to do, but he didn't understand. It wasn't just her job as the Slayer to protect people; it was her job as Daniel's friend to help snap him out of whatever evil funk that he'd convinced himself he was dancing to now.

And so she'd waited until Ambrose had had something to do, something that would actually get him out of the house for a while. In spite of him not being the most social of vampires, he'd found something to do the very next day, and her chance had come sooner than she would have liked. She knew he'd be upset, and it wasn't like she'd be able to hide it from him. Still, she knew that she was doing the right thing. She knew she was doing what she had to do, and she'd deal with the fallout that inevitably came with it when it happened.

So, there she was. Staring up at the expansive door like it alone was the demon she had to slay. Closing her eyes, she drew a deep breath and rapped on the door.

Lucius shouldn't have laughed at her statement but the sincerity and conviction behind it only made it even more hilarious. His laugh was darker than it had once been, still he rose as Buffy approached him with her oh so familiar steely determination. Stubbornness was probably a better word for it though.

"You chastise me for conveying villain stereotypes and yet you have quite clearly swallowed the entire book of heroic cliches" Lucius chuckled as he looked at the human he had once held so dear to him. He guessed he still did care for her to some extent, seeing her had angered him before due to her recklessness. Still, she had no idea just how far he had fallen and he intended to keep it that way. He owed her that much.

"Save me from what exactly? I'm a Witch, I practice magic and you can't change that" Lucius told her, not even noticing the fact that she had used Daniel's name and not his own.

Buffy wasn't amused at all by the situation. In fact she felt slightly more vulnerable than usual, especially when he laughed at her. He sounded so much like she remembered and yet entirely different at the same time. It was jarring, but she absolutely refused to let her resolve falter. And so, her expression remained set in stone.

"What can I say? Apparently corny heroics run through my veins right alongside the blood of the Chosen One. It's part of the document they have you sign when you become the Slayer. 'Must be willing to give cheesy speeches. Please sign here.'" She crossed her arms over her chest, alert and wary, tense and ready for anything.

"I don't want to save you from that. That's what you are, and I know that in and of itself doesn't make you evil. I've learned a lot since I came here," she continued, a bit more seriously. "Not every Supernatural is a monster, and not every human is a hero. But what you did to Evie. You're not like this. I know you aren't."

"I think I would rather you had come to kill me, it would be less painful on all accounts" Lucius sighed, no doubt the time would come when Buffy would discover the truth and come to kill him. He could not bring himself to burden her with the truth of Daniel's death just as she could not bear to cause his death. Yet if things were allowed to run their course, both would occur.

Although Lucius would only die if he allowed it. Chosen One or not, even without magic he had always beaten her in a fight. She tired herself far too easily with insistent attacks that were so easily displaced. She could not pace herself nor step back long enough to actually formulate a plan of any merit.

"So what is your objection then? To me becoming a Master? You seemed perfectly at ease with your own"

"Well, that's not gonna happen," the girl insisted quietly. "You're my friend, and you can sit there and pretend that you aren't all you want. You're my friend, my best friend. Friends don't give up on each other. Not ever."

Mentioning Ambrose, however, instantly put Buffy on the defensive, and it showed. "It's not like that with Ambrose," she snapped quickly. "He doesn't hurt me, and he doesn't consider me as some kind of lesser being. Evie's a person, and I don't care what those papers say. She's not your property."

"Evie is my property whether you like it or not. You are correct on one account however, she is indeed a person" Lucius replied swiftly, irritated by her misguided sense of righteousness. It was not her fault that she had been so brainwashed yet seeing him as the enemy? Bar a collar around Evie's neck and a scarification she knew nothing of his activities as of late and yet he judged her so harshly. Ambrose had undoubtedly killed many humans just by his very being and yet he was let off scott free?

"You know what else she is? None of your business. I offered to take you in, if you are so set in trying to save my soul and Evie from slavery you should have taken my offer. You chose a bloodsucking Vampire that you barely know over that"

Buffy tried not to flinch at his words, at the things he was saying to her and the ideals he apparently held on to now. She couldn't help but look like he'd slapped her for a second before collecting herself and narrowing her eyes in stubborn determination again.

"She is my business, whether you like that or not," she said, an edge clearly present in her voice. "All of the people who are being hurt here or who don't want to be somebody's plaything for the rest of their lives are my business. You know, ancient prophecy and all that?" Her attitude toward Supernaturals in general was shifting, and while that was confusing enough, it didn't stop her from being certain that the people who wanted to live free deserved it. And that none of them deserved to be hurt just on a master's whim.

"And you're my business too. What, did choosing to stay with Ambrose mean that I gave up any right to being your friend?" she asked, emotion thick in her voice as she spoke. "That I'm supposed to just accept that what happened happened? I'm sorry that I wasn't there. I wish I had been because I wouldn't have let it go down like that. But I can't change that now. And I'm sorry. But how does that change the fact that there are people here who haven't done anything wrong. People who don't deserve this and don't want this. You can't believe that doing this, being a part of it is okay!"

No, Ambrose was not the point. Should not be the point. Lucius's fantasies could not become reality just as Daniel's dreams were as dead as he was. Nothing good could come of them, he knew that and yet... And yet jealousy still reared its ugly head. Buffy should have been his as she had always been.

"You know exactly what I think of that prophecy as it stood then, I know better now and yet my viewpoint is still the same. You would do well to leave it all behind you as I have done" Lucius told her seriously, genuinely trying to help her on at least one level.

"Freedom is an illusion. You know this to be true. You were a slave long before you came here. It's the way of the world, Buffy. Humans crave subjugation"

Sometimes she wished she could. Everything would be simpler that way, wouldn't it? But then it would somebody else's problem, and then somebody else's again after them. The truth was, Buffy wouldn't wish being the Slayer on anyone, and she wasn't about to pretend like she just hadn't been chosen for it. There were people counting on her, people who weren't happy with subjugation and people who were getting tortured and abused on a daily basis.

"Well, that's not gonna happen." Her voice was level as she answered him. "I'm not running away from this. I can't. And you wanna know why? Those people that are just begging to be subjugated are counting on me. Because some of them are dying because some master somewhere woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and decided they felt like killing one of them to make himself feel better. Because some of them don't feel like living as somebody else's plaything. Because they have minds and wants and desires that, in spite of whatever you've convinced yourself, don't always include kissing somebody else's boots." She took a single step closer, unwavering with fists clenched at her sides. "Because they need to be free to make their own choices and mistakes and find their own way in life." The irony that she was fighting for something she could never fully have herself in the face of accepting her destiny as the Slayer was not lost on her.

"I know Daniel's still here. I know he isn't dead," Buffy added, her words no less confident but slightly softer as she looked up at her friend. "I'll always believe that. And if not, then why don't you just go tell your new friends that they have a Slayer in town? I won't stop you. Why haven't you done it already? Daniel's dead according to you. What would he care? It'd just be removing a thorn in your side because you know I'm not going to give up on you." She had to smile, not quite sure why but feeling it in spite of herself. "I'm stubborn like that, and I think you know that there's not going to be any talking me out of it. I'm clearly right, and you're clearly wrong. As usual."

"Only in Buffyworld does that even count as logic. In the real world, I am right, you have merely approached the issue from the wrong angle as always. I tell your secret and an angry mob of Supernaturals breaks down your door and kills you and stops you from pestering me, true. If I don't tell however, what I have is leverage over the Chosen One herself and the ability to stop you from trying to silence me. I'm a Witch after all" Lucius explained to her with a sigh that she had completely missed the point, as she usually did when presented with problems by him or was taught something by him.

"Even if I weren't a Witch I would still beat you in a fight. You've never been able to break my guard in combat"

Buffy refused to believe a word of what he was saying. It couldn't just be for those cold and calculating reasons. He was keeping her secret because there was still a part of him that was her friend, and she couldn't let go of that. He'd always been there.

"You might as well just hand me over, then. Because that won't stop me from trying to help you, and it won't stop be from trying to save Evie and all of the others who didn't chose this from a life they don't want," she said evenly, the stubborn determination in her eyes something he'd be used to seeing when she went into hero-mode. "I'm not giving up on you, and you can say whatever crap you want to try and get me to let go. I refuse to give up on you. I don't know if I can make things right, but I won't ever stop trying."

His next claim, however, clearly succeeded in pushing her buttons. "Right, well, you're all kinds of older than me, Danny, and I can still give you a run for your money. Slayers learn pretty quickly, so I've gotten like months of training since you last saw me." She wasn't actually sure of that was true. Her skills did improve at an almost alarming rate, but she doubted they'd gotten much stronger in the four weeks or so since they'd seen each other. "But you're just trying to be all antagonistic! And it's so not working, by the way. I'm zen. I'm like the zen master."

"Yes I know you have a martyr self-sacrificing complex Buffy. I took that into account. You believe that interfering, causing me to tell your secret would result only in your death, correct? Wrong" Lucius wondered if she would ever consider all of the angles before rushing into these things. There was a reason why Slayers didn't last long without a mentor. They didn't think things through and got themselves killed as a result.

"You're forgetting Ambrose. Harbouring the Slayer? I wouldn't fancy his chances, would you? So stay out of my business and I'll stay out of yours"

Lucius had noticed the use of the name this time and so was much harsher when he spoke than he had perhaps intended.

"I remember some rather choice words from you about zen and that it was pointless. It doesn't matter anyway, I'm a Witch and you're a Slayer so you can't win. Sorry"

If he was looking for a way to change her tune, he'd found it. Buffy tensed, fear flickering in her eyes for the first time since she'd entered his domain. It wasn't of course for her own sake, but the realization that she'd been endangering Ambrose the moment she'd told him what she was struck her. How quickly it took to turn that into anger...

"Don't threaten him. He's got nothing to do with this. He doesn't even know," she tried to lie, her fists clenched at her side.

"I can't win. Maybe. But maybe I can find a way. So long as there are maybes, I won't stop trying." Buffy looked him right in the eye, spreading her arms as if to beckon him. "And I don't believe that you'd hurt me. So convince me. Convince me that you're gone completely."

"You were always a terrible liar, Buffy. You never pay attention to what you and others say either. Ambrose kicked up a fuss the moment I mentioned it back in the shop and so I blew the power and cameras, locked the doors and knocked out the shopkeeper remember? The fuss he made was confirmation that he knew and that you had told him" Lucius had to wonder if Buffy would ever apply logic to her life. He doubted it to say the least, she was far too busy fighting everything to step back and notice things and how they worked. Like people. Like humans. She was too busy fighting to save them to step back and notice that they don't want saving.

Lucius wasn't sure he could bring himself to prove to her that Daniel was dead. He could easily do so, any one of his many secrets would do. He would only exchange her pestering for her wrath in revealing them. So he stayed silent.

"Perhaps you are right but I would not hesitate to hurt Ambrose if I thought it necessary"

Buffy let her gaze falter for a second and fall to the floor. It was obvious. She should have seen that it was obvious, but she'd wanted to believe that there was some way for her to leave Ambrose out of this. If there was anyone in the world who didn't deserve it, it was him. He wanted to help people, and he was good, genuinely good down to his core. She wasn't even sure she was in the right anymore. Not that she would let Lucius see that sort of doubt. She'd been chosen. She had a job.

And she would protect Ambrose to the death alongside all of it.

Her fist clenched and her eyes narrowed as she slowly looked back up at him. "I said. Don't. Threaten. Him," she hissed, angry at so much more than just the words. Everything was coming to a head for her. Her frustration with herself and her lot in life. Her anger from when he'd hit her in the store. Her fury when he'd threatened Ambrose. And her pain at seeing that she might lose one of the only people who'd really known Buffy and not The Slayer. She lashed out, a sudden and lightning quick movement to punch him square in the jaw with most of her strength.

It wasn't the first time that Buffy had tried to punch him in the face but never before had she done so with such anger and intent. They had sparred many a time and sure she had gotten frustrated that she couldn't really hit him but never had she gotten this angry.

Lucius's reflex had kicked in before he had even realised what was going on but years of martial arts training and discipline had taught his body to react before his mind was fully aware of the threat. He managed to stop the punch from making contact with his face by stepping back on one foot and blocking with his forearm. The sheer force of the impact nearly broke his arm yet somehow survived it. He would bruise as a result, or at least he would if he allowed it and didn't just heal it. The pain was there of course but he paid it no attention, his body was used to this abuse and besides the pain would kick in his adrenaline.

"Then stay out of my business" Lucius told her coldly, centering his balance and moving into a defensive position automatically. Although he no longer had the qualms with offense as Daniel had, he was not foolish enough to make an attack until Buffy had worn herself out.

She didn't bother to reply right away. She was too angry. She was thinking, but she wasn't thinking clearly. Her mind was more muddled than it usually was, which was saying something all things considered. The prospect of beating the good back into Lucius was apparently something she was willing to embrace as a legitimate way to go about this whole redemption thing right then and there.

"Or I could just punch you until you realize you're being dumb," Buffy replied, adopting her own stance as she sent a flurry of punches in his direction, one a shot to the gut and two more aimed higher in the direction of his face.

So Buffy had resorted to violence as always, how predictable of her. Talking things out hadn't been working though, so perhaps this would let her blow off some steam. Lucius was prepared for the punches this time, his left hand caught the shot to his gut and threw it aside in one swift motion as his right forearm blocked the two punches to his face. His forearm was already numbing to the pain and so the next punches would be easier to take.

It was ironic really that Buffy was doing this to save Evie whilst all she was achieving was an increase in his need of healing magic and therefore would be depleting his magic reserves. Meaning he would need to recharge with a little blood sacrifice. One day Buffy would stop and think about the consequences of her actions but not today.

Buffy dropped low, swinging her right leg in an attempt to sweep his legs out from under him. He was as quick as ever, and while she might have been physically stronger, his instincts were still a few notches above hers. The Slayer learning curve had yet to catch her up, which was aggravating right then and there.

"You say you're not Daniel anymore, huh?" she asked, angry but still confident in her belief in him. "You fight just like him." He'd always been defensive, mostly she assumed because he didn't want to hurt her. Would this prove that he wouldn't? "Or am I just special?"

As impressive as the move might look in movies, dropping for a sweep-kick was too obvious to be used against anyone who actually could fight. No one ever dropped like that in a fight and then didn't sweep-kick. As such it was easy to avoid, a quick step back whilst the opponent went low was more than adequate.

"You are special. You may be human but you're also the Slayer and have abilities that I do not. I cannot match your speed if I am trying to attack you and with your strength I doubt you would need many hits to take me down if I allowed you past my guard like that. Therefore, I conserve my own strength and energy until yours has depleted" Lucius rolled his eyes at her. As always she looked but did not observe, she was a hurricane and as such was chaotic until she effectively wiped herself with that same chaos.

It just upset her even more that he thought he could just spill his whole strategy like he thought he'd still win out in the end, even if she knew. He always did, though. He always told her, and still she always stubbornly pressed forward assuming she could triumph through sheer force of will. It was how she'd always done things, only this time, she was upset enough to be sloppy.

Buffy didn't say anything, responding only with a heavy-handed and wide-arcing punch that was both reckless and strong. It spoke volumes of where her mind was at right now and that he was clearly getting to her. If it connected, it would hurt, but while not tiring, her own emotional state was causing her to leave herself wide open.

Lucius would have been surprised and worried that Buffy had gotten so sloppy so early on in the fight. On this occasion though he wasn't analysing everything around him, he was in a fight and so was wrapped up in it. He saw the opening and automatically took it, exactly how he had been trained to but as Daniel he had ignored it unless taking them out was the best option.

He caught her wrist, stepped forward and used her own momentum to land a punch directly to her sternum. Not only would it hurt like a bitch, it would also wind her. For Buffy's sake it would be a good idea to end this fight before she got herself majorly hurt and so he used her emotional disorientation to his advantage. He kicked her legs from under her at the same time as sweeping his arm in the opposite direction and hitting her shoulder. It was far cleaner and less obvious than the sweeping kicks that Buffy was so fond of.

"You should never fight out of anger, Buffy. It clouds your judgement" Lucius lectured her

Well, he definitely still had that skill thing over her. Slayer constitution or not, the strike to her sternum hit her hard, and her eyes went wide. The attempt to knock her off of her feet was quite successful as a result, and she hit the ground hard.

Buffy struggled, trying to regain her footing as he lectured her, the advice only serving to make her more upset, especially on account of how right her was. But she wasn't about to just throw in the towel. Not yet. A crucial part of this whole thing had been to find out if Daniel was really gone. Continuing would show her that. She was sure of it. She caught her breath finally, and picked herself up, hopping to her feet in spite of the pain that still shot through her body. She'd long since learned to fight through the pain. Immediately her foot hot out high this time in a roundhouse aimed around his shoulder level.

"Thanks for the advice, Danny," she answered, a little more spent than she'd been earlier in the fight as was evident in her voice as she deliberately used his former name. "I'll take that into consideration and get back to you."

Lucius knew full well the pain she must be in in that moment, it didn't feel good to have hurt Buffy. Even though it had been in self-defense it had been against the only part of Daniel that was still around. The cold and calculating Lucius knew that she was dangerous to his plan and should be disposed of but nostalgia was a bitch.

After her previous wild attack, Lucius despaired as Buffy decided to do the same again essentially. Was she deliberately trying to get herself killed here? He caught her foot by the ankle but the impact sounded a loud crack that caused him to grimace. He was pretty sure that he had just succeeded in at least fracturing one of the bones in his arm. He had not anticipated the strength of the intended kick.

Gritting his teeth he shoved her leg up over Buffy's head, cursing under his breath at his own stupidity of blocking in that way with her. With anyone else it would have been fine but instinct had assumed he was dealing with a normal human.

"Any time you want to stop fighting is good with me" Lucius told her with a scowl, moving his arm was now very painful and sent short sharp bursts along his nerves. He could have healed himself, at least partially but then he would be distracted and left open to further damage. Evie wouldn't thank him for breaking anything once she realised that the more he needed to heal, the more she would have to bleed.

The force of her leg being thrown over her head knocked her flat on her back again, cracking her head against the ground. She saw stars, reeling to regain her senses. The sickening crack she'd heard when he'd blocked her kick resonated in her brain even as she lay on the ground for a moment, a moment that seemed like hours to her.

And yet eventually she stood, scrambling to her feet slowly but surely as she tried to regain her bearings. She lifted her eyes when the refocused, looking up at Lucius with more sadness than anger now. He wasn't gone. She absolutely refused to believe it. He couldn't be. Maybe it was stupid to think that way, but she couldn't help it.

Friends didn't give up on friends. Not ever.

"I want you to prove it to me. Prove to me that you're gone. Prove to me that my friend isn't still in there," she demanded, her voice raising. "Prove it, Daniel. Because I don't believe you."

Lucius lowered his guard now that it appeared that Buffy was no longer angry and violent. He did not know what he could safely tell her to prove that Daniel was dead. He could not confess to the fate of the camp or that of his mother. He did not wish her to know the nature of his magic either.

"Buying a slave, branding her and flooring you twice wasn't enough for you? It doesn't matter what I say, you will be as stubborn as you have always been. So instead I shall tell you something that Daniel never could" Lucius took a step towards Buffy, wondering if he was really going to say it after all these years. The hardest part would be making it seem like it was nothing to him now. Buffy was a constant in his life and so were his feelings for her, although they had shifted somewhat they were still there.

He brushed her hair away from her ear with his good arm and leaned in close.

"He loved you"
