Notes: This is not inspired by any past or present developments in any form or medium of the series. If anything did inspire this, it was the poem primarily cited, "Success Is Counted Sweetest", along with the movie Jacob's Ladder, and these together provided the title. This fic is also written in first person present tense, a format I normally despise, but this fic could not be written in any other way. I don't feel this is among my best, but I'm just happy to have been able to write and finish something, after a sickeningly long dry creative spell.
Summary: The streets are filled with people, the entire city is virtually thrumming with only a fraction of what I feel. I can't be late, not today of all days. He needs me today more than ever, from here on out more than ever. I'll protect him.
