Summary: Remembering the dead

It was hot today, impossibly so for Scotland, and yet the sky was so dark to be almost black, but not a drop of rain was falling. Jamie had asked Aunt Hermione and Ted for help in setting up a small area. He didn't know how they had managed, but it looked amazing. They had created an altar, low on the ground with plants and flowers of all sorts that covered the altar itself and all around it. As Ben was playing his guitars, the notes of amazing grace gently moving through the muggy air. A queue of people walked to the altar, placing pictures of their relatives. It was a strange assortment of faces. The Malfoys had placed a picture of Narcissa, standing near his grandmother's; Uncle George's photo was sitting next to Marcus Flint's, and Rolf and Sandy were waving at them. There were many others, but the portrait of Dumbledore, smiling at the crowd took the centre stage.

"You can start now, my boy," the portrait said when the queue ended.

James couldn't help but chuckled. "Yes, Sir." The sound from the sky made him look up, and he saw Fawkes flying over the lake. Where the hell had that bloody bird been all of this time? With no answer, he looked back to the crowd.

"As our former Headmaster just said, we should start, but not just with this memorial, but with a new way of life. Today, we remember the many people we have lost, people who've sacrificed their lives, more than once in some cases, to make our world safe, to ensure that all of us can live in freedom. We are here to remember how truly brave all of them were, how committed they were. We're here because we can't forget. We have ahead of us hard times. You've made sacrifices and you'll be asked to make more. Every single one of us will be tested beyond our imagination, but we can't give up, because if we do, our loved ones will have died in vain. We will stand united, facing whatever Riddle wants to throw at us, but I know that you will rise to the challenge and in the end, we will be successful."

He turned to the portrait. "It's been an honour knowing you, Sir. You've change my life in ways I never thought possible," he said, smiling to the old man. "I know I speak for many people, but especially for Severus and Alastor, when I say that our lives were much better because of you." He turned to the crowd again. "I wish we had portraits for all of the people so we could tell each and everyone of them how special they are, but I believe that they knew it all ready, they knew it in their hearts."

James looked at the pictures again, eyes stopping on his grandmother, and he took a deep breath before speaking again. "We cast spells around this memorial so it will be preserved. We understand that people will want to visit in private, but please don't come here at night. Also clear it with security when you leave the castle. We want everyone to have a chance to be here, but we want everyone to be safe, so please stick to these rules. On behalf of Severus, Alastor and myself, I thank you for being here to honour our dead. Thank you."

Scorpius kissed Lori's cheek and walked through the crowd. His grandmother had died but he cared more about Lori and the fact that he lost his brother and father. They were good people, and this wasn't right. He looked at the pictures again and sighed. Narcissa had her usual air of superiority, but then there was Sandy and he could have easily been Lori.

Leaving the pictures he walked around, expressing his apologies to the Weasley's when he saw them. He hurt for that family as well. Molly had been good to him especially. He remembered her trying to feed him and smiled a little bit. It caused him to nearly bump into someone as he walked. "Oh sorry," he mumbled.

Astoria didn't like being here, so exposed, with so many Gryffindors and Weasleys, but she wanted to be there for Narcissa. She and her mother-in-law hadn't always agreed, especially at the start, but with time, she had become a surrogate mother, the one she's never had, and now she was gone.

She didn't know how things had become so screwed up so quickly, but staying here wouldn't help. She decided to go back to her rooms when she almost bumped into Scorpius. "It's all right," she said, hands going protectively to her stomach. "How are you, Scorpius?"

Scorpius stood up straight, a lot like he used to in his younger years. "I'm fine, mother," he said formally. "I'm sorry about Grandmum." He wasn't really sure what to say after that. He sighed and looked down. Death was not something he dealt with well.

Her hands drew his eyes to her stomach. "It looks like my brother and sister are fine. I didn't know you would be here."

"We all are. She was a formidable woman," she answered with a smile. "She did a lot of good for a lot of people, kept fighting even after Lucius' death. She didn't deserve this end."

Astoria looked down and smiled. "They are doing fine. The only upside of this is that your father is always close by. They kick like crazy every time they hear his voice." She looked up. "Where did you think we would go, darling? This is our home. Your father didn't run when he was sixteen and he's not doing it now."

She kept one hand on her stomach, wincing at a kick. It seemed that Scorpius' voice was close enough to Draco's for the babies. "What do they have you doing?"

"No, she didn't deserve that end," he agreed, chewing on the inside of his lip.

When Draco had told him that they were going into hiding, he had expected them to be sunning themselves in the South of France. "I didn't expect you to come here," he said simply instead. "I'm glad that you are safe."

"I am training at the Dragon camp. I had a couple of tryouts for professional quidditch before this happened. I guess this will be good flight practice. I'm still great on a broom." He shrugged and smiled a little bit.

She reached over and squeezed his arm for a moment, before her hand returned to her belly. "This is the only place we could be, but thank you. I'm glad you are safe, too. Your father told me about owling you."

Astoria wasn't sure how she felt about that, but then no work was good enough for a Malfoy. "You would have done fine at Quidditcy. You and your father are both very talented. Still, do be careful. Dragons can't be tamed. I know; I married one."

He could never quite read conversations with his parents the right way. They always gave him some hope of sorting out their situation, at least for a minute. He knew they shouldn't. "I don't really know why he owled," he said. "I know it was so that I would protect myself but the question is why. After Aunt Andromeda was disowned, they hardly talked to her and Sirius never spoke to them."

He smiled at the small compliment. "Would you have come to see me play, even if you didn't tell me you were there? I would have done well, even as a reserve at first, but I would work my way up. It would have been brilliant." Maybe it still would be. "I should be great on a broom, ducking around those huge things. I don't need another funny haircut."

"Because you are our son, Scorpius. Like it not we follow certain rules too, but those aren't the same rules that applied when Sirius and Andromeda were younger. In those days, we might now have warn you," she said. "Things are different now, and whether you believe it or not, we don't want you dead."

Astoria smiled at him. "I don't know, darling. I won't lie to you. Probably, although we don't do anything anonymously. I'm sure you'd have known." She chuckled. "You would have done very well. I told you, you're too much like your father not to."

"I would have been fine. Al came to get me and then - ," he paused, thinking of the phrasing. "I'm fine, my family is fine." Lori and Al were included in that family. "We take care of each other and I am doing fine. There is a lot to be said for not following rules."

He was pleased to hear his mother would have came to see him play at least. "Good. I'm going straight back to it when we ever get out of here. I also contacted one of the local galleries and they were going to display some of my work. I had some free time so I've been practicing some different techniques with brushes and coloring."

When she thought that they could possibly speak like civilised adults, Scorpius proved her wrong. She really should know better by now that to expect basic etiquette from her son. "Yes, I'm sure you would have done amazingly well without anyone's help," she answered coldly. Those two boys were idiots who would have lasted an hour without this set up.

"That's very impressive. I'm sure your family is very proud of you. Now, I shall go and rest so I can protect mine. Enjoy your day, Scorpius." She didn't wait for an argument or more whining. It was time to go back to her room and leave these uncivilised people behind.
