Summary: Remembering the dead

It was hot today, impossibly so for Scotland, and yet the sky was so dark to be almost black, but not a drop of rain was falling. Jamie had asked Aunt Hermione and Ted for help in setting up a small area. He didn't know how they had managed, but it looked amazing. They had created an altar, low on the ground with plants and flowers of all sorts that covered the altar itself and all around it. As Ben was playing his guitars, the notes of amazing grace gently moving through the muggy air. A queue of people walked to the altar, placing pictures of their relatives. It was a strange assortment of faces. The Malfoys had placed a picture of Narcissa, standing near his grandmother's; Uncle George's photo was sitting next to Marcus Flint's, and Rolf and Sandy were waving at them. There were many others, but the portrait of Dumbledore, smiling at the crowd took the centre stage.

"You can start now, my boy," the portrait said when the queue ended.

James couldn't help but chuckled. "Yes, Sir." The sound from the sky made him look up, and he saw Fawkes flying over the lake. Where the hell had that bloody bird been all of this time? With no answer, he looked back to the crowd.

"As our former Headmaster just said, we should start, but not just with this memorial, but with a new way of life. Today, we remember the many people we have lost, people who've sacrificed their lives, more than once in some cases, to make our world safe, to ensure that all of us can live in freedom. We are here to remember how truly brave all of them were, how committed they were. We're here because we can't forget. We have ahead of us hard times. You've made sacrifices and you'll be asked to make more. Every single one of us will be tested beyond our imagination, but we can't give up, because if we do, our loved ones will have died in vain. We will stand united, facing whatever Riddle wants to throw at us, but I know that you will rise to the challenge and in the end, we will be successful."

He turned to the portrait. "It's been an honour knowing you, Sir. You've change my life in ways I never thought possible," he said, smiling to the old man. "I know I speak for many people, but especially for Severus and Alastor, when I say that our lives were much better because of you." He turned to the crowd again. "I wish we had portraits for all of the people so we could tell each and everyone of them how special they are, but I believe that they knew it all ready, they knew it in their hearts."

James looked at the pictures again, eyes stopping on his grandmother, and he took a deep breath before speaking again. "We cast spells around this memorial so it will be preserved. We understand that people will want to visit in private, but please don't come here at night. Also clear it with security when you leave the castle. We want everyone to have a chance to be here, but we want everyone to be safe, so please stick to these rules. On behalf of Severus, Alastor and myself, I thank you for being here to honour our dead. Thank you."

Lily listened with a bemused expression, wondering what on earth Al was doing with Peter of all people. As it turned out, apparently, Arithmancy which didn't surprise her. Peter had always been the top of their class with that subject, but it had gone overlooked a lot of the time. However, she wasn't sure she liked that Al was spending time with the man who'd as good as killed them and orphaned Harry, but it wasn't her place to say. She would, however, keep a close eye on the little rat. She wasn't going to let him hurt any of her boys again.

"Well, I've just learned that there is such a thing as sexy numbers," she said, eyes flashing with amusement. "Arithmancy is certainly more interesting than I remember." She grinned, mostly at Severus. "If I'd known that Arithmancy involved sexy primes when I was at school, I might have actually taken it."

"Arithmancy is very sexy," Al declared with utmost belief. "And brilliant too. And this is besides numbers like sixty-nine, or curvy infinity symbols, or posterior distributions.

But you're never too old or too late for posterior distributions."

"Posterior distributions?" She wondered if she'd regret asking later, but she couldn't deny she was curious. Arithmancy had never interested her overmuch, too much, but it was clear it was a subject with which Al was enamored and for that reason she was willing to hear more. And it was a good distraction from the somber reason they were here.

"I'm no Arithmancer," Severus disclaimed, "but I believe the term has to do with probabilities calculated after the event. Much duller than it sounds," he teased. "Unless you want to measure the uncertainty of assigning observations to classes."

He reflected privately on the irony of the fact that funerals were the closest he came to social events.

In that very moment, Al's brain cells suddenly seemed to change locations and travel very far down from their usual positions, standing up and cheering the display of sheer nerdishness they seemed to encounter.

The fact that the information exchange which prompted the reaction entered Al's brain via Severus' voice, was only slightly... relevant to the overall equation.

He shifted and committed that very moment to memory for fond replay and contemplation in less crowded atmosphere. "That's, um, very good way of saying it," he answered.

Lily was not unaware of Al's sudden shift, though she didn't comment on it. At one point, she had found Severus' mind sexy as well, and Al had married him so it was his right.

"I see," she said, grinning. "I still think I prefer Charms and Potions, so I'll take your word on the Arithmancy." She snickered. "Though I'm sure James' face when I tell him what we've been talking about will be priceless." She glanced over at her husband, pretty sure the fondness and affection was written all over her face.

Severus took in Al's rather glazed expression and the hint of a blush, and his lip twitched in that way that said he was fighting back a grin. Or possibly a triumphant leer.

Then Lily's comment was the last straw, and he gave an honest-to-Merlin snort of amusement. "I'd pay a pretty penny to see that," he confided.

He sobered a moment later, adding to Lily, "It's unfortunate that you didn't have the chance to stand up with me after all. We just thought that now wasn't the time for any formal ceremony."

"Keep your money Severus. I'm not going to photograph his gobsmacked expression." She smirked. "I'll just make sure to tell him just before coming in for dinner." And who said that over the years some of Severus' Slytherinness hadn't rubbed off on her.

She grew serious again, drawing back to the atmosphere and current conversation. "I understand," she said softly. "I wouldn't have wanted to wait either, or upset anyone. A private ceremony was the best choice. Just know I was there in spirit, if not body."

"That's positively fiendish," Severus declared admiringly.

He inclined his head. "I do appreciate the support," he murmured. "I'm sure it wasn't easy." For the first time he flicked a sidelong glance in James' direction.

"Well, I did have a good teacher." She winked at him, and then patted Al's shoulder three times. "Watch out for this one, he can be quite sneaky if you let him."

She moved in for another hug for Severus, holding him slightly longer this time. "We came to an understanding," she murmured as she drew back. "Try to get some rest. Both of you."

She smiled at them once again, and then headed back to James for a little cuddle of her own.
