How much firewhiskey does it take to change a light bulb?
Date & Time: 12 October, 2002 |after-work-ish
Post Type: RP
Status: Closed: Complete
Character(s): George Weasley, Katie Bell
Location: The Three Broomsticks
Summary: George gets a letter. And needs a friend. Although maybe another drink will do... Or not.
Warning for sexuality.

George stared down at the letter in his hand, shaking his head, absolutely hating the knot it had created. Right in the gut. Icy and sharp. Like a knife. Bastard...

He blinked, then read the letter again.

George,

I know it's been a while, but I was just thinking how much I hate how we left things before. I wish we'd have had a chance to talk or something, but stuff happened so fast.

Anyway, I'm back in London, and I'd love to see you. Think we could hook up sometime? I miss you.

Matt

George gritted his teeth, crumpling the letter in one hand. Hate how we left things? Stuff happened so fast? He stood without moving for a very long time, counting breaths and heartbeats and the number of times his mind inserted the word motherfucker into any thought it had...

Seventeen.

His next thought was Angelina. She'd be home... But that thought was dismissed just as quickly. She'd be logical. He didn't want to be logical. He wanted to be...

Numb.

George shrugged out of bright magenta robes and left them lying on the floor, Apparating directly beside the front door of the Three Broomsticks and walking inside. A word. A coin. He took the bottle of Ogden's and the glass, then headed for an empty table. There were plenty.

He downed one glassful, then poured it full again, looking into the amber liquid for a moment. "To a big fuck you," he said, lifting the tumbler, then draining it again. He considered other options for people to drink with, and realised that it didn't matter, really. Drinking alone would do, if he didn't have a friend to drink with. Be with. Mourn and be furious with. He splashed the glass full again, taking a deep drink, then let out a ragged breath. Never stopped burning, no matter how much you drank...

Fuckin'-A.

George tilted the bottle, pouring by feel and sound, looking up toward the voice as he did. He lifted the bottle just as the liquor neared the top of the glass, giving Katie a wry bit of smile.

"Kat. Sit." He gestured with the bottle, suddenly glad he hadn't picked up the glass, or she'd have a lapful. "Make barboy there give you a glass. Oi! Barboy!" George pointed to his glass, and snorted as the bartender rolled his eyes.

A glass floated to the tabletop and George splashed it halfway full, pushing it across the table. "Sit 'n' have a drink with me."

Oh dear Merlin. George was well in his cups. She sat down opposite him, thinking that if she drank with him, maybe he wouldn't die of alcohol poisoning.

She lifted her glass in thanks and then drank the Firewhiskey down. Her eyes watered and it burned her throat. "Do you want to split some fish and chips with me?" She asked, hoping he'd agree to eat something. "I'm feeling like fish and chips tonight."

"You don't look like fish and chips," he said, squinting a bit as he studied her. "Just look like Kat." He drained half his glass, then looked back at her, shaking his head. "Nah. Just Kat. Pretty. No breading." He swallowed the rest of the drink, setting the glass down with a thud.

"So, tell me something good," he said, pouring their glasses full again and setting the bottle aside. He picked up Matt's letter, a crumple of parchment, and smoothed it out before folding it in half. "Gotta be something good..."

"Oh, ha ha," Katie said, rolling her eyes. "I feel like eating fish and chips, stickler-man, is that better? Although, they do say breading is the new black. I might have to try it one day."

She watched as he smoothed out a piece of parchment and gathered that was the reason why he was drinking. She hoped it wasn't Ginny; that she had this contagious thing they kept talking about on the radio. Ginny was sick weeks ago, she told herself, she'd be fine now, surely.

Katie downed her glass, starting to feel the effects of the liquor. "Good? I heard a really good story from Ang yesterday. About you and how you're a fantastic snogger. Now I have to say, I'm the teensiest bit offended, Mr. Weasley, that you chose to practice your powers of seduction and snogging on Angelina and not on me," she said with a very dramatic pout.

George grinned. "Fantastic? She said fantastic?" He sat back with a bit of a smug look, glass in hand. "I guess she would, though, wouldn't she?" He took a long swallow, nodding thoughtfully.

"Did she tell you that we also talked about Weasley endowments? Maybe not that same day, but we did. Have. And see, Weasleys... there's this thing about us. We're irresistible." He gave the parchment a glance, then downed the rest of the drink. "To most people. With taste and fucking good sense. Oh. Sorry..." He pushed the glass toward her, hoping she'd fill it for him. He wasn't entirely sure he should be in charge of the pouring now.

But the drinking? Oh yes.

"Because these Weasleys. Men." He nodded soberly. Well, as soberly as he could manage. "Are amazing. You should know."

Katie giggled. "The Weasley endowments? Oh my. I don't know if I'm quite ready for this conversation."

"You are completely irresistible," Katie insisted, thinking maybe this had something to do with Matt. Arsehole. "I've never been able to say no to you. Spent some quality time in detention for that."

"Yes. You're better than Cornfoot men," Katie said, filling George's glass partway. She really should order them some food. "You're all amazing. Even Percy! You know he can be quite fun sometimes?" She nodded sagely. "We do lunch. It's good."

"Well, it's a process," George said, nodding and reaching for the glass. "See, first you snog. Then you talk about how well-hung Weasleys are. And I explain," he continued, pausing only to drain the drink, "that a Weasley, my dear..." He dropped his voice to a whispery sort of slur. "...could... you know... from across the room." He nodded, satisfied, then reached for the bottle again.

He gave the parchment another glance, then took a drink right from the bottle.

"Percy. He's okay. Organized the crap out of my books. No idea why."

Katie watched him, her mouth open in disbelief. "Uh uh. You're going to need to spell it out for me, George," she said, shaking her head, "none of this winking and 'you know' stuff. What can a Weasley do from across the room?"

George took a drink right from the bottle and Katie reached up for it. "Easy, George. No need for bad table manners," she tsked, making sure she cleaned the bottle with her wand before she poured them each another glass. She didn't think George was sick, but one could never be sure. And it just wasn't sanitary. She flagged down a passing waiter and ordered two fish and chips, determined to get something in George. Not to mention herself. She was beginning to feel woozy and lightheaded.

"Because Percy loves order," Katie said as though this was the most obvious thing in the world. "I think he would have a fit if you rearranged his socks." She hiccuped and then giggled.

George eyed the bottle, then nodded as she poured. "Never can be too safe." He lifted his drink to her, then leaned across the table so he could tap his finger in front of her.

"A Weasley," he slurred, a near whisper, "could fuck a girl from across the room. That's what 'you know.' You know?" He nodded, tapping the table again, then sat back.

"Well, maybe not Percy. He'd likely do it from the hall, so he didn't have to touch her or anything." Another nod, and he tossed back his drink, waving at the waiter as he passed. "He also," he added in a stage-whisper, "Organised my tea, by alphabet. And I've only got two sorts of tea."

"What? That's not even possible!" Katie said, trying to apply logic to the situation. "Unless by room you mean a closet or a small broom cupboard."

Katie smacked him gently on the arm. "Don't be mean to Percy," she said, "I'm sure he can pull lots of girls. He's clean and smart and he has a good job. He's funny and well behaved and loves his Mum. He wouldn't go around kissing other girls behind your back. Or telling you that you were too much of a commitment for him." Katie hiccuped again and stared at her hands.

"Is too possible," George said firmly, poking at the table again. "Because. It is." He nodded.

Then scowled and rubbed his arm, giving Katie a pitiful look. "Ow." Not that it hurt, but still. He was pissed, and she was smacking him?

He dropped her a wink as he picked up his glass again. Not so much the interest in fish, but another of these. Yes. He didn't want to think about Matt's note. Didn't want to feel the icy knife lodged just there, next to his heart...

"I wouldn't mind if Percy kissed girls behind my back," he said logically, then filled his glass again, sloshing a bit onto the table.

"Oooh, alcohol abuse. Who're you committing to, then?"

"Prove it," Katie said, crossing her arms over her chest. "I want to see flow charts. And diagrams. And...scientific data."

Katie sighed and leaned over, kissing the spot where she smacked him. "There. All better now, Georgie Worgie?"

"Of course you wouldn't. I mean, he's your brother, not your boyfriend. You should be pleased if he's kissing girls behind your back. Kissing girls in front of your back would be highly improper, I think," Katie said.

She filled another glass for herself and placed the bottle out of George's reach. He could have more once he'd had some fish in him. "Not Timothy Cornfoot. Apparently, it's too much of a commitment for him to agree to see me casually but to not see other people too. I mean, I'm not asking for a ring and a life-long relationship. Just asking that he not be with other girls while we're together. But that constitutes a 'serious relationship'," Katie said with another hiccup, "and so I am uncommitted, good sir."

George frowned as he tried to follow her story, putting Percy's kissing anyone in front of his back off to the side for a moment.

"So wait," he said, tapping his glass. "See, coming from someone with a dick, that sounds like crap. You can't see someone casually if you don't have the alibi... ablition... shit. If you're not s'posed to see anybody else. That's sorta what makes it casual, see..."

He nodded earnestly, picking his glass up with both hands to take a swallow. "If I'm tellin' a girl I'm not kissin' anybody else, tha's bloody serious." He drained the rest, then looked at her. Both of her. He smiled at the new arrival.

"Hi."

"See, but I talked to Ang and she said it sounded perfectly reshon...resun...logical to her," Katie said, the words not coming out quite right. "So it's a bloke thing. Wanting to spread your seed and crap. That's just bollocks. I don't want to spend my time wondering if the guy I'm seeing is off shagging someone else," she said, "and he expects me to just go off, snog other blokes and tra la la, everything's fine and dandy?" She shook her head vehemently and then stopped as the room spun a bit.

"Who are you talking to?" Katie wondered, looking beside her. She poked the air, wondering if there was a Disillusioned person there.

"I'm not saying I'm seed-spreadin', George argued, gesturing with the empty glass. "Jus' that I'm kissin'. And that I'm not gonna say I'm jus' kissin' you, unless there's somethin' else there. 'cause... That." He waved vaguely, as if that explained it all. "Casual." He nodded for emphasis, then frowned, trying to remember what they were talking about.

Katie poked the other her, and George snickered. "Jus' you," he said, trying to focus on just one, and failing miserably. "There's two. But you jus' put your finger in your own eye. Or ear. Somethin'." He shrugged.

"Fuckin' pissed here. Don' make me try to 'splain stuff."
