News All Around
Date & Time: Friday, 27 December 2002 | Afternoon
Post Type: RP
Status: Complete
Character(s): Fleur Weasley, Bill Weasley
Location: Shell Cottage
Summary: Bill has news. Fleur has news.
Retcon Info: These three threads happened, except without the Charlie/Nicky bits and in Aug/Sept 2002. Bill and Fleur have been in France together since Oct 12th.

Fleur found herself checking the clock every few minutes as she made her way from room to room, keeping an eye on the various cleaning spells she'd set to rid the house of the layers of dust that had settled in the two and a half months they'd been away from Shell Cottage. Bill had gone into the office today, mostly because he knew that the place would be relatively deserted on a Friday so close to a holiday. They'd been back in England less than a day, but she knew he'd be able to relax better if he wasn't thinking about what awaited him in the office on Monday.

That said, she really wished he'd stayed home today. She hadn't known this morning when she'd kissed him goodbye that it would be important—but there was a lot she hadn't known this morning.

As she finished her circuit of the house, Fleur ended it in the sitting room and sank onto the couch, pulling her her knees up and hugging them to her chest. A big grin came to her face, but she bit her lip and chased it away. It was early. There was still so much time for things to go wrong, like they had the last time. She shivered at the thought, closing her eyes against the torrent of emotions that came with letting herself really think about it. She'd grieved, and she'd finally given Bill the opportunity to grieve, but it hadn't gone away. And now—she drew in a sharp breath, but she chased away the sob that might have come with it only a few months ago. How was it possible to be so elated, and yet so terrified? Her chest felt like it might burst from it, so instead she forced herself to her feet.

Bill would be home soon. Then at least she wouldn't be dealing with the news on her own.

It had been an exhausting day, in the only way that the first day back from an extended time out of the country could be. It was mostly meetings, finishing up a few of the reports from his findings in France, and just trying to get the lay of the land in the office. A couple of the goblins had seemed almost happy to see him, insofar as goblins could be happy. There had been talks early in the day of dragging him out for drinks once Friday was done, but he was very firm about his intention for a quiet night in. There was always the next week, after all.

And anyway, he'd spent as much time as he could reading up on and gathering information about adoption practices through the Ministry, and through private organizations. Having a magical child would have been ideal, of course, but in the back of his mind, Bill couldn't help but feel he would be glad to have any child to love-- and he felt like Fleur probably felt the same way. They'd had fairly extensive discussions about the matter during their time in France, but Bill knew he would never tire of the subject. He would take any kind of family he could no matter what shape it took, so long as it was with her.

He Apparated home at five o'clock on the very dot, and breathed in the salt sea air that he wasn't even aware he'd been missing until they'd come back late the day before. "Fleur?" he called out as he took off his work robes and set them to floating to the cloak rack by the door with a small flick of his wand. The place already looked amazing, but that didn't surprise him in the slightest. Bill pulled a handful of pamphlets out from his jacket pocket and walked into the sitting room. He couldn't help the wide, warm grin at seeing his wife there, but it slipped just a hair when he took in the way she was holding herself. In two steps, he was in front of her, sinking to his knees and covering her knees with his hands. "Are you all right, love?"

Fleur had continued working on getting the house back in order, getting their luggage unpacked, and starting something simple for dinner—since real food would have to wait until she'd had a chance to get to the market—but none of it was enough to truly distract her from the things flitting through her mind faster than any Snitch she'd ever seen. When she'd finished all the necessary things, she ended up back on the couch with a throw pulled across her lap, trying to keep herself from staring at the clock. It wasn't usually like her to fret, but this she couldn't take lightly.

She heard Bill enter, but despite having watched for him all afternoon, she couldn't make herself move from her position on the couch even to greet him. She must have looked even more paralyzed than she felt, because he came to her immediately, concern in his voice. She blinked at him for a second, voice momentarily stolen by the weight of what she needed to tell him. Her eyes dropped to his hands, as they rested on her knees, and the pamphlets clutched in one of them. Slowly, she drew one of them out and read the title, and her heart swelled. They'd talked so many times now about trying to adopt a child, and she'd hoped that his newfound enthusiasm wasn't feigned for her benefit, but there had always been that tiny seed of doubt she couldn't quite smother. But now they'd been back in England for barely a day, and he was already bringing her information.

Fleur's eyes filled with tears as she looked up at him. The fear was still there in the slight tremble of her hand, but there was joy, too, in the shaky smile that she gave him. Her voice barely a whisper, she said, "I'm pregnant."

There were times- and this was one of them- when Bill profoundly wished he was able to do the Legilimens spell. He watched Fleur intently as she took one of the pamphlets and glanced over it, and wondered what she was thinking. The tiny moment felt stretched to an eternity that turned even more torturous when her expression turned teary, and the pamphlet began to shake a little in her hold. But this was at odds with her smile, and Bill was more confused than ever.

And then she uttered the last two words that he could have expected.

Everything expanded and narrowed in an instant. He was aware of the thread-worn rug beneath his knees, barely adequate padding above the hard wood floors; the fabric that covered Fleur's legs, soft against his hands; the hard, sharp press of the pages of adoption information almost cutting into his palm where he was holding them much harder now than before; the smell of a beef stew simmering in the nearby kitchen, the scent of Fleur's cooking now as familiar as his mum's; the pervasive chill that seeped through every stone, every nook and cranny in their home; and Fleur. All of that, and there was just Fleur, and her words, and they were all he needed in the world just now.

He couldn't have said when it happened, when he snapped back into himself, but he could feel his face pulled into a huge grin, and there were tears on his cheeks. At some point, he had sat back on his heels, and the pamphlets had fallen out of his hand so that he could grip her knees properly with both of them. It was only then that his brain started to be flooded with a million questions, each one more inane than the last. His particular favorite was how?- because that one was just ridiculous- although are you sure? could have also taken the prize. He shoved all of them down. He knew she would tell him everything once he'd finally broken his shocked (and elated) silence with a simple, but no less meaningful: "I love you."

"Moi aussi," Fleur whispered, leaning forward until her forehead touched Bill's, but otherwise staying in her cocoon of blankets for now. There was a part of her that wanted to collapse in his arms, sobbing in a combination of elation and anxiety, but she instead focused on keeping herself reined in. It would be too easy in that closeness for her to let slip her control of that side of her that would distract him too much right now.

When she'd managed to push back the tears far enough to speak more than two words together, she took a deep breath and then said, "It is very early. Today is the first day I could check...though I nearly forgot." A little tinkling laugh escaped her at that, at the absurdity that she might have forgotten now, after all this time. It was a good sign, that she'd let the worry of it slip that far away—except that now she had a whole new set of worries to replace it, and she wasn't quite prepared for the ferocity of it. "It is...what if...."

Fleur blew out a frustrated breath, unused to being at a loss for words, and still feeling staggered by the powerlessness of her situation. Now that it had happened, she still had no control over it. She would take care of herself better this time, but she knew very well from further discussions with her mother and Molly that early pregnancies could be lost for no reason at all. If Fate decided once again to take this from them, would they be able to make it through again? She wanted to say emphatically to herself that they could get through anything now, but doubt ate at her. "Oh, Bill," she said softly, and this time a hand sneaked out from under the blanket to touch his damp cheek. "There's so much to feel all at once."

Bill caught her hand before it could leave his face and held it there, turning his face once to kiss her palm before looking at her again. His heart was thundering in his ears, mind spinning in a million different directions at the what if. A part of him wondered if her 'what if' mirrored his own, and he pressed his lips together in an effort not to overwhelm her with his own 'what ifs'. "There is," he said quietly, agreeing with her thoughts about the emotions surrounding it all, and slid his other hand to his own chest, pushing against it. "Everything. But anything that comes, we do together, okay? Whatever you need, whenever you need it. And if..." He couldn't say it, but felt his heart break a little just at the thought. "We'll face that together too. Any 'if' that happens, all right?"

He got to his feet and slipped onto the couch next to her, drawing her against him. Bill's smile was back as the I'm pregnant echoed through his mind, and he kissed the side of her head. "Whenever you think you're ready, we should Floo-call your parents. They'll go completely spare."

It occurred to him that they would need to let his parents know as well, of course, but they'd just spent so much time in France with her family, it only felt right that they should know first. Naturally, he would completely understand if she didn't want to rush to tell anyone, given the possibility that-- Not only could he not say it, he wouldn't even let himself think it. Or, more rightly, it would flash through his mind- that terrifying possibility- but he refused to give it have purchase. Still, a part of his heart was already steeling itself, hardening just in case. It stole through his chest, quiet, insidious, and he was helpless to stop it. He just prayed to whoever or whatever was listening that he wouldn't need it- wouldn't need the already heavily scarred armor. He smiled down at her, every bit of that part of himself locked away for now. "Can I do anything for you right now? I could finish dinner, if you'd like."

Fleur nodded and offered him a watery smile, unable to speak again as her love for him and his promise warred with the fear of needing that promise to be fulfilled. She so desperately wished they didn't need to think about it, that they could just be happy--and then he was next to her and for a moment the happiness won out. She burrowed into his side and tucked her face against his neck, breathing in the cherished scent of him and letting herself grinning without reserve for just a moment. The tears still slid down her cheeks, but they were joyful ones, pure and untouched by darker thoughts.

No matter what happened, they would have this moment. Right now they had received a gift they weren't entirely sure was possible, and she wouldn't let that be tainted.

She looked up at him and laughed a little, surprised that the humor of Bill's need to be active could penetrate the fog of everything else. "There's nothing left to finish. It only needs to simmer a little longer." She pressed a kiss to his jaw, then snuggled in a little more, pressing against his chest until he settled back on the couch. Fleur sat silently for a moment, listening to him breathe, idly run one hand across the front of his robes.

When she finally spoke again, it was quieter, though without the edge her words had had at first. "I don't want to tell anyone yet." She looked up again, a question in her eyes. "But we could start thinking about redoing the guest room. Even if--" She stopped the thought before it could drag her mood down again. "We will need it, one way or another." Fleur leaned over and grabbed the loose pamphlets from the floor. "And we should not stop planning for this." Who was to say they couldn't adopt a baby, too?

Having Fleur in his arms helped to chase away most of the darkness that had begun to catch and spread in his thoughts, and he settled back against the couch at her urging, content and happy and hopeful. "I can at least set the table once it's done," he offered, sneaking a quick kiss. "Or make something for pudding. I think we have everything on hand for me to try to make the dacquois like your mum showed me."

In the months that they'd been in France, getting back to where they were now, Bill had gone out of his way to earn Fleur's parents forgiveness. While Jean had come around pretty quickly, convinced that Bill felt terrible for how bad things had gotten, and for the truly horrible things he'd said in a moment of unthinking anger, Apolline had been another matter. Eventually, though, she had defrosted enough so that she'd spent the weekends teaching him how to cook various French foods and pastries, instead of glaring at him balefully. It was a miracle, indeed, and he felt a sudden pang of missing the pair of them.

As wrapped up as he'd gotten in his own memories, he only vaguely noticed his wife's silence, but he kept his arms around her, fingers working in small circles across her back. Bill nodded his complete understanding at her desire to keep it to themselves for now. Honestly, it was such a huge thing, this tiny being inside of her, but he wanted it to be for just the two of them. And then she brought up converting the guest room, and his joy brought a huge, unrestrained smile to his face just at the prospect.

He started to nod in earnest, almost protesting when she leaned down, and then froze when she came back up with the forgotten adoption brochures. Bill's heart started thundering in his chest, and he was pretty sure he'd given up breathing for the foreseeable future. It shouldn't have been possible, but his grin had widened, and he swept Fleur up into his arms with a gasping laugh. He pressed a brief but impassioned kiss to her lips. When he pulled back, it was only by a fraction of an inch. "Yes, yes to all of it. Why stop at one, or even two?" He laughed again in pure joy. "Why not start with a whole ruddy Quidditch team?"

"All right. This I will let you do." Fleur gave him an amused, indulgent smile, not-so secretly enjoying that he wanted to do something for her, however simple and domestic it might be. "But I'm afraid for pudding I would rather have the rest of la Bûche de Noël that Maman made, before it's no longer good. But maybe in a few days?" She lightly touched his jaw and tilted his head down for another, longer kiss.

She hadn't expected quite so extreme a reaction to her suggestion about their extra room—and it wasn't until he mentioned a Quidditch team that she realised he was talking about children, and not household renovations. She clung to him by instinct as he kissed her, and his unguarded smile brought tears back to her eyes, though Merlin knew why that was making her cry.

"Really?" Fleur asked, and after a short pause, it occurred to her that it probably wasn't clear which part she was referencing. She tried again, idly brushing away one of the half-formed droplets at her temple. "I thought starting the adoption process could be in case, and then maybe later if, but...." Now that Bill had put the thought in her head, she couldn't say she disliked the idea of doing both now. Maybe they could have a child of their own and give a home to one that needed it. The idea felt...right. "I think we may be a little mad for even considering it," she said, but punctuated the statement with a little laugh and a smile that nearly matched his own. "Your mother is going to be beside herself."

He would refuse to admit it, and was saved from having to do so by Fleur's lingering kiss, but- given the choice- Bill found that he very much preferred Apolline's left over dessert to anything he could have attempted. His stomach gave a low grumble at the prospect, making him laugh against her lips. "Not sure I stopped for tea this afternoon," he said with a low laugh. "All the ruddy catch-up to do."

At her renewed tears, Bill frowned faintly. Was it too much? Too soon? But his slowly building anxiety was washed away when she seemed to be turning over the idea aloud, and his smile came back again. "I think we've earned a touch of madness, yeah?" He leaned over to kiss her temple, and then laughed. "She's going to go completely spare, you mean. 'Finally,'" he affected his mum's voice almost uncannily, "'someone is giving me grandchildren!'"

Fleur laughed at his imitation of Molly, and the sound gradually faded into a happy sigh. "Children," she repeated, testing out the word. It wasn't the first time, but it was first time it had such weight to it. "We are going to have a baby."

She kissed him again before unwinding herself from his embrace and standing. Her hand drifted briefly to her abdomen, and she sent another quick glance in Bill's direction before crossing to the little writing desk on the other side of the room. She opened the pamphlet, doing a scan for the contact information, and then carefully wrote out a short note asking for an appointment in the coming days. "You should be able to get lunch at normal time this week, yes?" Fleur glanced over her shoulder at her husband. "I'm meeting Hermione this week to start our search for sponsors, but it will not be every day, and we can do evenings if needed."

She handed the letter to Bill to read and then went into the kitchen to check on the stew. It smelled good already, but she added a few spices and gave it a quick stir before replacing he lid. Another five minutes would do it. "Tea?"

A baby. Their own baby. Their own babies, if everything went well. And it would go well.

He watched her curiously as she rose, gaze following the movement of her hand. Bill smiled softly at her when she looked back at him, heart full to bursting. He stood after a moment, and took the letter from her. "I'll make sure I'm free for whenever we can get in to see someone. It's been made pretty clear that I'll get to set my own hours. The France job was a lot more lucrative than what they originally thought." He glanced at the pamphlet, and grinned. "Ooh, they have a Floo address! We can send it now, maybe hear something first thing next week."

Bill went to their fireplace, rolled up the appointment request, putting it in a small, capsule shaped container- he would need to get more, now that they were back- and sent it off with a pinch of Floo powder. "Yeah, thanks," he said to the offer of tea, wandering into the kitchen to join her. "How's that going, by the way, everything with Hermione?"

Fleur was very proud of herself for not tearing up as she watched Bill send off their inquiry. If there had been any remaining doubt in his enthusiasm after their discussion, his excitement at finding the Floo address would have quashed it soundly.

"It is still very early stages." She laughed briefly at the congruence of that statement, given everything they'd just been discussing. Apparently everything in her life was at that point—including, in some respects, her relationship with Bill, even considering that they'd been married for five years now. "We still plan to focus on equal treatment for all, though with a focus on traditionally mistreated groups. Werewolves, house elves, Squibs."

She and Hermione been exploring the idea before things had gone sideways with Fleur and Bill, and it had only been the last couple of months that Fleur felt certain enough in her future to continue the discussion. Everything that had been happening in England had threatened to stop them in their tracks again, except that recently they'd realised the need for support for those who'd gotten sick, too. It was the perfect opportunity. Once the HMDC figured out what was happening and made progress on a cure, they would be able to put more of a focus on the other groups, too.

Fleur set the tea to steeping and handed Bill a couple of bowls to put on the table. "We're hoping to find a couple of significant backers before we go too much farther. To allow them the opportunity to shape the enterprise with us, if they so desire." That could have advantages and disadvantages, but Fleur had no doubts that between her and Hermione, they could steer things in the proper direction. "One of the shops in Diagon Alley is planning to move to Blackthorn after the first of the year, so we thought we might move in there, if the timing is right." It would be a very visible, convenient location, and it was all the better for its proximity to Bill's office.

Although, he touched his own face in an unconscious gesture, Bill's thoughts went immediately to George when Fleur mentioned Squibs. It twisted in his gut, cutting through his joy with brutal efficiency. For several precious minutes he had forgotten about the larger world, and for an irrational moment he absolutely loathed that world. He set the bowls on the table, then summoned a few pieces of silverware, napkins, and glasses from various cabinets and drawers to settle next to them in an elegant manner- this he picked up from Jean. He even set a couple of candles out, lighting them with a flick of his wand.

"If you both like, I can ask around Gringott's for any potential backers, maybe compile a list of investors known for their philanthropic tendencies, find those who might seem more inclined to your group's ideology." His mind was already going through his list of contacts at the banks who might be able to help. Bill smiled up at her when she mentioned moving into Diagon Alley. "Yeah? If you're not careful, you might find yourself employing your husband. Or you'll be well shot of me, coming over for lunch and tea breaks all the time."

"That would be very helpful, yes," she said, giving him a bright smile as she levitated the milk and sugar to the table ahead of her, carrying the teapot and cups. "Hermione has some contacts she's developed through the Ministry, and I've met many people while volunteering this last year. It is no certain thing that they will want to invest, though. We're looking for several smaller backers, or at least one substantial one. Then, hopefully, we'll gain enough community support to continue to grow from there."

Fleur put the teapot and cups on the table before leaning into Bill with one arm draped over his shoulders. "You would come over to steal kisses on your breaks, you mean," she teased as she bent and kissed his smiling lips. Her voice turned more serious and her expression softer as she added, "Or to bring me ice cream when I'm craving it." Her lips brushed his again, lingering longer this time. "Or to pick up our children when our schedules don't quite match."

It took a moment for her to pull herself away from him again, but finally she sat and flicked her wand at the soup pot to start ladling out helpings into their bowls while she served their tea. "Even if we do not tell our families about the baby" —she couldn't help the bright smile that came to her face at that— "we can tell them that we're starting the adoption process. They will be excited for this, too, I think." And it would feel good to talk about some part of it.

“Guilty as charged- on all counts,” Bill smiled up at her, catching the hand that landed on his shoulder and accepting her kisses as the gifts they were. He pictured each scene as she presented them, turned them over in his head, and every one was a tiny slice of paradise. They fit so easily into his life that he couldn’t even imagine any other possible outcome. Any alternative was completely out of the question. And he could help Fleur and Hermione further their cause in the meantime, he would be more than happy to do so.

He had a lot to make up for, and this felt like baby steps.

Bill nearly laughed aloud- would it be like this from now on, every thought centered around children and family? He could dredge up no dread at the prospect, and instead found himself echoing her smile right back to her. “That’d be perfect.” He sipped at his tea, finding it just as he always liked it. The soup was amazing as well, and it was all he could do not to lift the bowl to his mouth and eschew silverware altogether. “Should we owl, or try to arrange for a Floo call? I’d be all right with either one, though a Floo call might make it easier to answer any questions, or get answers for ourselves."

Fleur managed to pull herself away from Bill with the awareness that dinner would likely be ruined if she didn't step away now—because it would go cold before they got back to it. She moved to the other side of the table and sat, still unable to pull her eyes away from him as he started on his food. Despite everything they'd been through the last year, she felt very lucky at this moment to have him. She ate a few spoonfuls of her stew, finding it imperfect, but servicable for the time and ingredients she'd had.

"I think the Floo for Maman and Papa," she said, after considering a moment. Though she knew the majority of the conversation would probably be she and her mother smiling and crying, with very little information being exchanged. It wouldn't be as emotional as the later conversation would be, but it would be enough. "But for your family, we will invite them for dinner. Do you want to owl your mother, or shall I?"

Fleur leaned back in her chair and only barely resisted wrapping her arms around her torso at the little shiver that went through her, thinking of telling everyone. The first grandchild—grandchildren—would be big news, whatever the way they were achieving that family. "Hermione and Harry, too, of course. It will be a celebration." She sipped her tea.

Bill almost ached to reach out to take his wife's hand, but they were both eating, and, well, there was time enough for that later. He nodded when she said they would Floo her parents, but her next suggestion fired up something completely insane in his head. He set down his spoon carefully, eyes going wide. "Feel free to shoot this down, but I've just had the most mad idea.

"What if we threw a small New Year's party? We could throw something together in four days, right? And most of that would be the weekend. I can send out the owls, arrange for the food, clean, maybe decorate a bit. I mean, there's a better than good chance that most everyone already has plans, but we could still see?" He turned a hopeful gaze toward her. "I'd do everything, so you can focus on your organization with Hermione. What do you think?"

Fleur bit her lip as she listened to Bill's supposed mad idea, but mostly to hide the smile. It was a little mad, because hosting any party was always more work than it seemed like it should be, but that didn't mean she disliked the idea. "You know very well no party including your family can be small." And if it was something other than a true family gathering, they would need to open it up for those invited to bring guests. "And that I will only have to redo it all if I let you decorate."

She finally let her expression shift to show him she was teasing, though he'd probably already figured that out. She leaned in and reached across the table for his hand. "We'll do it together. My plans with Hermione do not take up so much time as that just yet, and I'm pregnant" —she beamed at him, enjoying getting to say it aloud again— "not breakable. I do not feel so tired as they say can be normal." Though now that she knew to look for it, she could see how over the last couple of weeks she'd tired earlier in the night than usual.

Her hand lingered in his grasp for another moment before Fleur pulled back to continue eating, though she was already getting full. "Perhaps you should send some owls tonight, though. Some may have plans already, and then we will know to buy less food."

His excited smile softened, turned fond and reflective as Fleur lightly admonished him. She was right, of course. Bill had very clear memories of his mum being pregnant with the twins- and subsequently Ron and then Ginny- and she had handled running the already hectic family just fine then too, without the full brood to contend with. It was utterly unfair to think his wife wouldn't be up to do the same. She'd been a bloody Triwizard champion, for wizard's sake.

He grinned again, and nodded. "Yes, I'll send them tonight, request an RSVP." He paused, and then abruptly: "I'm completely mad for you, you know?"

Fleur didn't respond immediately to Bill's somewhat-rhetorical question. Instead, she carefully chewed and swallowed her last bit of stew, rinsed it down with a sip of tea, then levitated it all to the sink before finally standing. Two steps took her to her husband's side, and she leaned down and pressed her forehead to his before whispering, "Je t'aime tellement."

She kissed his nose, then straightened and pulled away before he could make any move to pull her closer. "I'm going to take a shower, and then go to bed early. It's been a long day." And no matter how much she wanted to let him know she wasn't an invalid simply because she was pregnant, she was pretty tired. "Perhaps finish those invitations quickly?" Fleur raised an eyebrow at him, clearly flirting, and then giggled girlishly as she walked toward the stairs.

He would never admit to the pathetic little whimper that left him at Fleur's frankly brazen flirting, but the noise left him nonetheless. After a moment, Bill cleared away his own dish and the tea set, pausing only long enough to clean them and put them away. And then- it was was undoubtedly a world record time- he dashed off the invitation, duplicated it, and then went out into the cold sea air to fetch their owl.

After directing it to take most of the invites to the post- along with the requisite amount due for handling the rest- he came back inside and stood in the living room for a moment, listening to the falling water upstairs. That was his wife. His pregnant wife. And they were going to try to adopt right away, not as a contingency, but in addition to.

He sank back against the door, knocked momentarily breathless at the happy turn his life was suddenly taking. He thought of George and Ginny and Percy, thought of everything they were going through with this wretched disease, and he hoped they could garner some small bit of happiness at the news- or at least the part that he and Fleur were going to share for now.

He heard the water shut off, and pushed himself away from the door. Bill smiled to himself, and then walked to the stairs, already pulling off various articles of clothing as he ascended. They were back home, together, and he fully intended to christen their return to Shell Cottage properly.
