Summary: Family lunch breeds many topics of conversation.

Fleur had been to many family meals over the last few months, but very few of those had included Bill as well. She thought it boded well that her suggestion they go today, and that they go together, hadn't been met with hesitation or disagreement. It was perhaps a tiny thing, but she was happy to take even that. Being around her Weasley family always made her feel a bit homesick for her family in France, but there was something strengthening about it, too.

"You are finished with this?" she asked Bill, then rose to help Molly clear the table, taking his plate with her. Her own plate was much cleaner, but then she rarely ate a lot, and she was careful to only take what she would finish. There were times when English food still did not sit well with her stomach, and it was best to not appear as though she disliked anything, as that was not usually the case.

"Lunch was very good, Molly." Fleur smiled at her mother-in-law, then began adding dishes to what was already in the sink. "The bread in particular, as always."

Molly loved having meals with her family, even if it was just a few of her children at a time. And she was pleased to see Bill, after him having been gone for what felt like ages.

She began gathering dishes, giving George a smile; it pleased her to see him eating. Pleased her to see Bill here at all. Especially with Fleur. "You boys just sit and relax a while," she said, and followed Fleur into the kitchen with the last of the plates.

She smiled at her daughter. "You know I always get carried away with the bread. I only meant to make one kind, but then there was dark flour on sale at the market, and Arthur does love rye bread, and so it goes."

She added the dishes she held to the sink, then set things sudsing inside before wiping off her hands. "I'm so glad to see you and Bill together. I was beginning to think his work would keep him away until I was a hundred..."

"Yes, but you notice that it always disappears, no matter 'ow much you make," she said with a little laugh.

"I am very 'appy that the job is finished," Fleur agreed, smiling. It was easy enough to omit all the worries that went along with that happiness. She'd had months of practice doing so, of making everything seem normal to the family once again. They all knew that she and Bill had been separated, but now she was home. Things should have been all right by then, and she didn't want to concern them that they weren't. "Shell Cottage is not the same when 'e is not there."

Grabbing a cloth from the sink, she began wiping down the work top.

"It does, no matter how much I've cooked, or how many people are here. I think it's some sort of Weasley magic, that their appetites will grow to encompass whatever there is on the table."

She laughed, lifting glasses into the sink as well.

"The Burrow isn't ever the same without Arthur, either. Sometimes he's so busy it feels like I don't see him for days."

She turned and heated the kettle with her wand, then pulled down two tins of tea, holding them up for Fleur to choose. "So things are going well, then? I can't tell you how glad I was to hear you were back with us..."

She'd been so relieved, really. Fleur was good for Bill. Good to him...

"The purple one," Fleur said, pointing to the tea packet before moving to the other side of the room.

She paused in her wiping, glad that her back was to Molly for the moment so that her mother-in-law would not see the expression on her face. While it made her chest tighten to hear that Molly was glad she was back, it also made her sad to know the reality. It wasn't often that anyone asked her directly about how things were going with Bill. She thought maybe they didn't want to pry, and maybe they were also a little afraid to hear the answer. Those sorts of questions were much harder to gloss over or evade.

"We are trying," she said after a moment, glancing at the doorway. Trying to make things better, to get back to where they were, but was it working? She thought it was probably too soon to tell.

Molly put the other tin away, then opened the purple one and scooped leaves into the pot. She poured the water and set the pot aside to steep, then looked back at Fleur, still facing away from her.

We are trying...

"It can be hard sometimes," Molly said carefully. "Especially with one gone for so long. Sometimes they feel like someone else, for a while..."

Fleur finished the last bit of wiping and replaced the cloth on the sink. When she looked up at Molly, she nodded and tried to smile. "It will be nice to return to our routine, now that Bill is 'ome during the week again. I am sure that will be good for us."

She leaned back against the worktop, letting out a small sigh. It sounded so simply when said that way, but it was anything but simple. "It never used to be 'ard, though."

Molly pulled out a chair, then reached for a pair of cups from the shelf. She gestured for Fleur to sit and poured out simple tea.

"Why is it hard now, then, do you think?" She slid one cup across to Fleur.

George watched Fleur and his mother disappear into the kitchen, then sighed and picked up his mug. "At least she didn't pester me about seconds or offer to bring in pudding or something."

He gave his brother a wry smile. "I try to make it here at least twice a week so she doesn't take to Flooing to my place and making sure I've got food. I really think she thinks I'm hopeless to feed myself."

Bill watched Fleur walk away. Things were better but not perfect--if they ever would be again. He wanted to be the man she was looking for. Could he be? He loved her--that's the only thing he was certain of.

He looked at George, glad to see his brother didn't look like the walking dead at the moment. "Just wait," he said. "She'll be back and she'll likely have that pudding. If it's chocolate, give it to me. I never turn down chocolate pudding."

Bill pushed a hand through his hair, still surprised at the lack of it. "Fleur suggested we come. She loves the whole family bit," he said. He did, too, but there was no reason to get all sentimental with his kid brother just yet. "Aren't you hopeless?" he joked. "How's work? Anything new there?"

"Sincerely. She threatened to take in my jeans the other day. God, when does your mother stop mothering you?" He shook his head, leaning back and looking across at his brother.

"Or trying to get you to cut your hair? Although it looks like she got to you..." George fluffed his own shaggy hair, then grinned. "And yes, I am, but don't tell her. I don't need her stepping through my Floo unexpected. I might be busy."

He reached across for a piece of bread off the small plate, and pulled a bite off it. "Work's okay. Got a couple new ideas, but I'm still trying to get Verity comfortable making the old stuff before we get onto something experimental. Don't want to give the girl a heart attack."

George glanced over his shoulder. "Mum's glad you're here. Together. Things okay?"

Bill chuckled. "Our mum? If we're lucky then never." He finished off his butterbeer and stretched his legs beneath the table. He scrubbed his hand over his hair. "What, this? If you can believe it, I wasn't even thinking of her when I did it." He'd been thinking of releasing some of his pent up demons, but that hadn't exactly happened. Impulsive. You were impulsive.

He cut his eyes over at George. "Busy? Doing what? Or should I even ask? You always were up to no good." Bill quietly loved how George could always come up with something that made him laugh. He wouldn't want to harp on it too often because he would likely get a word or two from their mum, but George had an imagination which made Bill jealous and incredibly proud.

"Yeah, she seems right happy, doesn't she?" Bill said. When George asked if everything was okay, he hesitated before saying, "Sure. Good. Things are good." No use in being completely honest. He didn't want his baby brother to think his life was as fucked up as it actually was. He was the older example, and he would be damned if he seemed like a poor one.

George chuckled. "Sincerely." The day Mum stopped mothering them, would be a sad day indeed. He looked at Bill's hair, then shrugged. "I guess I'm just used to the ponytail, but I guess I can get used to you looking like Charlie. Looks good, actually. What did Fleur think?"

He glanced toward the kitchen, then leaned against the table, still picking at the bread. "Just busy. Bloke likes the freedom to walk around starkers in his own place if he wants, right?"

He focused on the bread for a moment, looking at his brother. "She does. But Mum's always happy if there's more than one of us in the house. You, now, you're not so convincing. Most people don't have to think about whether things are okay, if they are."

Bill laughed. "Starkers, is it? Why am I not surprised?" he said. He knew George's words were true. Their mum was always pleased when her children were around; he supposed that was a blessing, especially since there were so many of them.

Bill eyed George. "Life is an adjustment," he said. "Everything is always changing, and I'm in the middle of one, that's all. It will all work out," he said with more confidence than he truly felt.

Percy put a final book into the box and decided it was about time he went down stairs and spent some time with the rest of his family. He took a look around his old room, it looked strange to have a few bare book shelves. But he really didn't need quite so many trashy novels or copies of books he already had. It felt good to have had this little clear out. It felt like he was achieving something.

Percy walked down stairs and stood in the hallway a minute. He knew Fleur and Mum were talking in the kitchen, and he didn't want to interrupt. He also didn't fancy getting quizzed on what he was doing with himself at the moment. He probably couldn't put off the inquisition for ever but it was worth a try.

Percy pushed open the living room door and went to sit down, wishing he had made himself a cup of tea before he went upstairs.

George had called the all-clear for coffee, then carried his cup into the living room, nearly spilling it down himself as he jumped at the sight of his brother sitting there. "Crap. You startled me. When did you get here?"

He took up residence with his cup in the centre of the sofa, leaning to give Percy a nudge. "What's new in Hogsmeade? The girls in the shop making you nuts yet?"

"Sorry," Percy said, smiling at having made George jump. "I was upstairs sorting through some of my old books. I'm thinking of getting rid of a few."

"Nothing really. To be honest, I don't actually see them much," Percy said, wondering if he ought to say hello to the girls who worked in George's shop more often.

"The pills I'm on seem to be working well," Percy said, glad to have good news to pass on for a change. "But since I'm unemployed, the only use I'm making of my working brain is in reading books."

"What's new with you?" Percy asked.

"Oh, yeah. Mum said you had got some new stuff to try. Brilliant that it's helping. Not having to do so much with the lists and stuff?" Personally he thought it was great that his brother's main issue was being made better with Muggle meds. Wish they'd come up with something to bring my magic back...

He leaned back, hand curled around his mug, then shrugged. Looked up as his mother entered the room, then sighed.

Maybe it was better to just bite the bullet, right?

"Guess there is something new," he said after a moment, giving Percy, then his mother a look. "Angelina and I have decided to have a go at things. See each other properly."

"Not as much," Percy said. "I still use my schedule to remind me when to take my pills and important stuff like that. But things really do seem a lot easier. It's a big relief," he admitted. Then Percy looked at George and felt terrible. Here he was going on about himself when George still had no magic. How thoughtless could you get?

Percy looked up and smiled as their Mum walked in and was only half listening to what George was saying. "You and Angelina?" Percy said, blinking a few times in surprise. Percy had known that she and George were close but he hadn't known how close. And Percy could have sworn that he had heard that Angelina had moved to Leeds with someone. Well, he must have heard wrong.

"Good for you," Percy said with a smile, shaking off his surprise at the news. "You need someone to keep you in line."

"Angelina?"

George grinned at the sound of his mother's voice, and nodded. "Yes. Angelina. Johnson. You know her." He smiled faintly, ducking a kiss and an overjoyed sound from his mother. "We talked for a long time one night, and..." He shrugged. "I told her I loved her. And here we are. And don't you go making a fuss over her, Mum. We've not really broadcast it to the world yet..."

More because of Jeremiah and the fact that Angie still had needed to talk to him, but still. "Give her a break, okay?"

He sighed as his mother disappeared, singing what sounded like Love is in the air, and sat back with his mug. "Angie can do it," he said, of keeping him in line, and looked over at Percy with a smile.

The crack of an apparation sounded from the entry hallway, accompanied by the whimper of Nicky. Charlie pressed a soothing kiss into the top of his son's head and murmured his apologies. "I know, I'm not really fond of it either. Hullo, Weasleys," he called. "I've brought myself and someone far more important than myself."

He was expecting an onslaught of his mother from wherever she was in the house, and he looked down a Nicky, who was already squirming to be free. "Ready to be plied with food, hugs and kisses, little man?" he asked as leaned down to set Nicky's feet on the floor. Charlie kept his hands around Nicky's as the boy teetered a little and then started forward. "Watch out, world, here we come!"

Fleur was feeling a little better after her talk with Molly, and she'd sat at the table long enough to enjoy the warm tea before cleaning the cups away and then checking that she looked presentable enough to leave the room. The redness in her face had calmed naturally, but she was also quite good at the charms necessary to cover that sort of thing, and she'd applied one for good measure.

Hearing Charlie's voice call from the entryway, her stomach clenched. There was excitement, both to see her brother-in-law and her nephew, but also anxiety. She hoped that seeing the two would not drag Bill's mood so far down that he felt worse the rest of the day.

"Bonjour, Charlie," Fleur said, smiling as she stepped out to greet him. She kissed him on the cheek, then squatted on the ground in front of him to say hello to his son as well. She brushed a kiss across the little boy's forehead. "And you, Nicky." She tickled his side. "You are very 'andsome today. Can you not do something with that father of yours as well?"

Charlie was a little surprised to see Fleur, although he felt a bit silly for that surprise. There was no reasonable explanation for feeling like that- Fleur was family, after all. It had been a long while since they had talked, a fact that made Charlie a little sad. Nicky squealed with delight to see Fleur's bright smile, and Charlie had to let his hands go because he seemed very insistent on being loved by his Aunt Fleur.

Nicky wriggled and laughed as she tickled him, and Charlie tried to affect offense. It didn't really last, though, and he chuckled. "Me? No, I think I'm a complete lost cause. How are you, Fleur?"

Fleur kissed both of Nicky's cheeks as he came to her, allowing him to stand there for a moment, holding onto her hands, before swinging him up into her arms and standing up. "Yes, I believe that you are," she said, though not without affection. "I think I shall 'ave to pity Susan the next time I speak with 'er, for she must 'ave great patience."

She was glad for the baby squirming in her arms to distract for a moment from his question. Her conversation with Molly had drained her, and she did not feel quite up to that level of honesty, even with Charlie. But because it was Charlie, she also could not give him the same dismissive answer she might have given anyone else.

"Today is a good day," she said, offering him a smile. "And I am taking the rest as they come. I 'ope for many more good ones to come."

"Like a saint, that one," Charlie affirmed with another low laugh. He loved seeing his family with Nicky, and Fleur was no exception. "Patience, and perhaps a touch of situational blindness."

He was a little taken aback by Fleur's answer, and felt that there were likely undercurrents that she wasn't being forthcoming about. That was her prerogative, however, and this was apparently a family function- at least from the sound of George and Percy's voices in the next room- so he felt it best not to ask any more directly. Why, though, did he get the impression that it had something to do with his brother?

He fought the urge to sigh and instead reached out gave her a small hug and a kiss to her cheek. "Good days are a great start, I think. I hope the same for you."

"Yes, they are. Merci." Something in his face told her that he was not completely convinced by her answer, though. A bit more emphatically, she added, "I am fine. Do not look so concerned."

Leading the way into the next room, Fleur asked, "Are you 'ungry? we 'ave finished with lunch already, but you know that your mother will be very glad to feed you."

She bounced Nicky on her hip a bit, running a hand over his hair. It was getting a bit longer, curling over his ears now. He looked so much like his father. The thought brought a smile to her face, though one tinged with regret and sadness. She had often wondered about her own children, if they would favour her or Bill in looks, and it was easy to imagine a miniature version of her husband in her arms.

Looking up, she saw that Bill was in the room, and she offered him a tentative smile before turning back to Charlie. "There is plenty of bread, of course. And I believe there is chocolate pudding," she said in a tone more directed at Nicky.
