RP: Couch ... mmmm....
Characters: Benjy, Cas
Time/Date: Evening, November 2
Location: their flat
Warnings/Rating: None?
Summary: Benjy is tired from training
Status: Complete

He'd known training was going to be rough, that the hours were going to be long, that he was going to be confused to the point of frustration more than once. His predictions had all come true, though he'd had lunch and two other breaks to chill himself out and work out his frustrations.

But the tired ... not so much with the working that out. Today was his second day of training, and he was just as tired as he'd been the night before.

Letting himself into their flat, he made a bee-line for the couch and flopped face-first down onto it.

"Cas, I'm broken," he mumbled into the couch cushion before he tilted his head. "Caaaaaasss..." he called so she could hear him.

"My grand plans? After dinner, I'm going to clean up and talk to you, and go to bed evntually. Tomorrow, I'm going to avoid Wolfsbane. In the long run, I'm after ... I dunno what I'm after. Someone, obviously. It'll fall into place. You?" She asked.

"Sleep," he nodded. "After dinner comes sleep. Then work again, where I will try not to explode with frustration at all the things I don't know that someone has to teach me, or at least toss a book at me about."

He grinned and shrugged. "After someone, huh?" He waggled his brows playfully before he summoned over the remote for the telly. It was really kind of brilliant, the whole 'not having to move' thing, and he was completely taking advantage of it.

"I hate that feeling," Cas said. "I don't have the foggiest as to what you're doing that someone has to explain, but it's maddening to not know what you're doing!"

"Yeah," she said, leaning back. "I died alone last time, and, while I don't remember actually dying, I remember that living alone wasn't exactly pleasant. Even here, before you moved in, it was too quiet and it was freaky. Now, you're here and it's better. As for dating, it's not that being single's some curse, it's just not my cup of tea."

"Yeah," he agreed with a sigh. "Things they all take for granted as widely known, just because it was invented between our times and they learned it in school." He shrugged one shoulder. "But the guys tutoring me are kind of catching on and they'll ask before they get into something, if I need it explained or ... what's been updated. Can't be any easier on them," he decided. "Having to slow down training to make sure I'm on the right page."

Benjy grinned over to her. "Well, you could date me. Then we'd avoid the awkwardness of you bringing home blokes to find me sprawled on the couch in my pants or something like that."

"I suspect it's much more extreme than what I'm seeing in healing, but I understand the general gist. As for the blokes training you, at least they're not too thick and can explain things. Obviously you've got promise; they did take you in, after all. Not like that was really a surprise, though."

Cas tilted her head against the couch, eying him. "It makes sense, you know. We're already living together and whatnot and temporally displaced and ... I'm rambling. But that was a yes, if you're asking."

"I don't think they'd let thick people work down there. I mean, I'd go into details, but I'm pretty sure they'd overhear me somehow and they'd fire me," he nodded. "That wouldn't be good."

He grinned over to her. "Good. Now I can stop trying to impress the birds," he teased softly. "Does that mean I have to start taking you out to dinner and buying you flowers and the like?"

"You never know ..." she trailed off. "Odder things have happened. And, yeah, would prefer you not be fired. It would not be the best of outcomes."

"Merlin, no!" She laughed. "It would mean having to get off the couch and actually look presentable; I don't have that kind of energy, and I'm guessing you don't either," she teased.

"No, then you'd have to swing rent and groceries," he pointed out. "That wouldn't end well." He chuckled quietly. Really though, once he finished training, he'd be bringing in a fair bit of income, and they could upgrade their flat.

If they wanted to. He kind of liked this one.

"Well, not tonight, but someday we might have that sort of energy. Like after we have a day off or something and have had a chance to sleep."

"You'd have to buy the groceries; I'd forget and then we'd never have milk or tea or sweets. And I'd be working overtime, because neither of us cook, and we order in all the time." She paused for a minute. "It would somehow end with something exploding."

"Ahh, sleep. Days off. Going out. All good things. Eventually, they'll happen. I think."

"Think we can owl order groceries?" he mused. "I definitely think we could write a guide on laziness," he reflected as he nodded. "You know. If we weren't so lazy." He chuckled quietly.

"Exploding anything is probably bad," he decided with a nod.

"They'll happen eventually. Things will probably slow up once training's done, settle me into a more normal schedule."

"Our sheer laziness really has to be astounding to someone. We could make big money if we let that mystery person interview us. Of course, we'd have to stop being lazy long enough to find that person, and haggle over our interview price."

"I agree; it might end in a visit to Mungo's, and no one wants that."

"Normal..." Cas mused. "I never thought I'd be looking forward to normal. It's been pretty ace, though, at least the little glimpses of it I've seen."

"See, and by not being as lazy as we possibly can, we're defying the very spirit of our laziness. Probably creating some sort of paradox in the meantime."

He exhaled. Normal ... but were they bringing their version of normal to this time? Recreating the world during the war, the world they'd been living in?

It didn't feel that way, not yet, but it could. A few more weekends like the past weekend ... and it wouldn't take much more for the whispers of war to start.

Cas shifted, settling against Benjy. "I think that our sheer existence at this point has created some sort of wonky paradox. I wonder if we're missing in our own time," she wondered.

Normal. Cas had never wanted normal. She'd wanted adventure, excitement, adrenaline; she'd gotten it in spades, gotten more than she'd ever wanted. It wasn't what she'd always imagined. Now, all she wanted was to settle down, pretend the attacks would stop, and go back to her little slice of normal.

He eased an arm around her, drawing her body against his. "Don't think we're missing. We couldn't be missing," he said. "Everything happened, right?" His shoulders lifted a little in a shrug. "No one who's come back has said "hey, you vanished" so we can't ... have been missing," he decided.

He rubbed her shoulder gently before he heard footsteps in the hall and smelled dinner. "Foood," he groaned as his stomach grumbled. Rising, he headed over to the door to exchange money for food before carrying the bags into the kitchenette and settling them on the table. "Dinner is served," he called toward the couch with a grin.

It was the first time Cas could remember being less than thrilled that food had arrived. Running about a hospital ad instilled in her a good appetite, and she was hungry, certainly; she had also been comfortable, and cuddled against ... against her boyfriend, which was still a new and exciting idea, though she had been living with him for quite some time already.

Never mind that her will to move had largely been sapped, and the couch was comfortable. Still, she pushed herself up, and padded towards the kitchenette. "Mmmm, dinner," she said. "We need napkins, don't we?"

"Napkins or silverware," he decided. "I intend to eat with my hands, so I guess that's a napkins for me," he decided as he sorted out the containers before dropping into a seat.

"So are you going to break the news to Lily, or should I? I mean, she is going to be crushed to know I'm off the market." He paused. "Hell, Alice will too for all that. You should definitely take that shot for me."

Though he did wonder if Cas would get fussed over a little harmless flirting. Lily and Alice, after all, were both happily taken, right?

"Napkins it is then," she said, pulling two from the holder, dropping them between containers. "Let's see how little of a mess we can make, shall we?" She teased.

"Oh, they'll be simply heartbroken," she gushed."It might send poor Lily over the edge! First James, now you. Whatever will she do? At least Alice has Frank to fall back on." She sat down. "Though, Lily does have Snape, and I'm sure that somewhere in there, there has to be some part of him able to be comforting. I mean, I'm assuming he took care of her a bit after Saturday's, er, incident."

Benjy picked up one of the napkins, settling it near his section of food.

"Man, I still can't wrap my head around that. He's old. He's crotchety. He's ... old. And she's with him. You know, there's probably not a straight man out there she couldn't have if she tried. Half the blokes in school wouldn't have said no if she'd looked at them. And yet, she's with old, cranky, used to be a Death Eater Snape."

Yes, all right, he hadn't exactly seen the man since he'd been back, but he'd spoken with Lily a few times, and when she'd mentioned Snape's age, he'd been a little surprised.

"But hey, if she's happy and he's happy, who am I to judge, right?" With a grin, he attacked his food happily.

"It's ... certainly odd. To me, at least. He's an ex-Death Eater, she's an Order member. He's pushing forty -- I think --, she's pushing twenty-two. But, who am I to judge? She seems happy, and it's better than pining over James, which just would have been tragic. New life is new life, even if its jarring, I guess. Maybe he's different around her. Who knows?" She shrugged, starting in on her own food.

"The real question," she said, swallowing," is what about children? Lily's still young enough; she was just torn from her infant son, basically. I don't know if she wants kids again, but I can't really see Severus Snape in a paternal light. Can you?"

Benjy laughed quietly. "Merlin, no," he said as he shook his head. "I wonder how they're handling that," he mused. Not that it was any of his business, but he was curious. Lily was definitely a very nurturing person and he couldn't see her without children, really. Eventually, anyway.

Maybe he'd ask her next time. See how she reacted to the idea of it.

"Maybe he is different around her, but how different can he be?" Though even as he said it, he wondered. Hadn't the man served as a spy, played both sides? Plus, he was grown up from what Benjy had really known of him, and he hadn't exactly known him that well in school. Mostly had known of him, and what he heard from Lily after they'd come back.

He shrugged and smiled. "Suppose we'll never know. Maybe they've just got one of those relationships that defies time and definition."

"It's funny," Cas said. "I always thought that'd be Lily and James." She shrugged. "Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned romantic. Too many Muggle films too early, you know?"

"As for children, I agree. I can't see her without them. Or, at least without something or someone to nurture. She's got the little Kneazle, but even they only need so much love. Eventually, I'll guess she'll have great-grandkids, or kids of her own. Either way, I doubt she'll leave her nurturing to stew."

Cas tried to imagine Snape, as she remembered him, as a father. Maybe it was the age she had known him at, or maybe it was knowing more of him than actually knowing him, but the image simply wouldn't come. Then again, she tried picturing James as a father, trying from about the same age as she pictured Snape, and found herself no more capable of conjuring any sort of paternal image; everyone knew had that had worked out, though. She decided it had to do something with teenaged boys as reference points.

Benjy thought about it, and shook his head before he shrugged. "Maybe she'll take up teaching. Tutoring. Something. Or babysitting. So she can have kids without actually having kids."

He grinned as he tried to imagine Snape as the history books painted him and as Lily spoke of him as his father, and couldn't imagine growing up with a man like that.

"Bet he'd give a kid nightmares," he finally concluded before he grinned and shook his head. But he supposed it took all kinds to make a world, and Snape was ... well, one of a kind.

"So what about you? Your thoughts on kids? Think if we had one, like, ten years from now or something, that we'd lose it in the house?" Sure, that was put the cart miles away from the horse, but he was kind of curious what Cas' thoughts were on things like that. Why not get the tough questions out of the way early?

"Snape? Snape would definitely give a child nightmares. And fodder for therapy for life, most likely. But don't tell Lily I said that. He may unnerve me, but she seems to really care for him, so whatever works, I suppose." To be frank, from what Cas knew of Snape, she didn't understand Lily's attraction to him at all, though things seemed to be going well enough for them.

Cas laughed. "Oh god, yes, I want kids. Eventually. Not right now, I mean, I'd like to rebuild my confidence in my ability to brew potions first. And make something of an adult of myself before I try teaching anyone else. But, yeah, in the future. I always liked the ones I knew on ward, and even if we do lose it in the house, I'm sure it'd be resilient enough to find its way back, or at least to food. I'd like to think we'd pass on common sense to this theoretical child, after all."

"Can't believe he was a professor," Benjy murmured with a shake of his head. Sure, he'd read the history, and he knew why, but ... damn. "Wonder how many of his students are suffering from nightmares, even now," he mused with a soft laugh.

"How'd we even get onto that topic?" He shook his head and made a gesture of shoving the topic aside.

"Lots of kids? One or two kids? Just so I know what I'm getting myself into if we manage to stick this out longer than a week." He winked playfully at her.

"I dunno, but it might give me nightmares. Can you imagine a scarier bloke to teach the little firsties --and everyone else for that matter -- to brew? What if you were horrid at potions? I'd rather fail than go to him for any help; he'd be worse than Slughorn!" She exclaimed.

"I hadn't thought about it, really. Just kids. Not a brood full; I'd like to be able to retire with some money to my name and some presentable furniture. Maybe two, or one. I dunno," she giggled.
