Who: Vlad, unconscious Theresa, and OPEN
What: Theresa fell down a well and is now unconscious. Vlad needs help. 911. S.W.A.T teams. THE WORKS.
Where: Basement/Masquerade ball
When: Immediately after this.
Warnings: Yelling, lots of water dripping everywhere, and a very cold, unstable, and shirtless Vlad.
Notes: O YEA AND EMIL IS DEAD.

A strange sort of numbness was beginning to creep up his legs, and it made every step more difficult. The blood trickling from his scalp had tried and it itched, mingling with the white-hot pain of open wounds against the air. He was shivering, and the more he tried not to the less successful he was; while Theresa hung limply from his arms, her dark hair plastered to her head. The sounds of the masquerade grew nearer, the bright laughter and chatter and music that seemed from a time so long ago. His world was cold, so very cold; even his anger had frozen into something else.

He pushed past the curtain, staggering into the freakishly light room. His vision went blurry, and he found himself turning in circles in an attempt to adjust to the light.

Masks, all around. Nameless, faceless, barely even human. He wondered briefly where Esme was in the sea of faces. Where Helena was.

He knew, he knew, HE KNEW.

"Help." Vlad's voice was weak, catching in his throat. He tried again, raising his voice to a yell despite his raw throat. "HELP. SOMEONE, PLEASE, I NEED HELP."

Another stagger forward, his grip on Theresa iron-tight. "SHE NEEDS MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. SOMEONE HELP US!"

There was a growl in his throat at the mention of Vlad, but Kane was leaving even as he turned to look...

Luca wasn't sure if he would move a finger to do anything for Vlad, but he saw there was a woman in his arms. The mask was ripped off and thrown, quickly discarded as he started towards the man he hated most in the building.

It wasn't until he was close that he felt his breath catch in his throat.

"Theresa?" he choked out, horror and surprise mingling in his chest. "Oh, christ. Theresa..."
He hadn't seen her in some time, and perhaps they hadn't parted on the best terms, but--

He caught himself reaching out to her, but then he remembered who was holding her, and his eyes flickered back up to Vlad's face.

"What HAPPENED?" he asked, more bewildered than accusatory. As much as he might want it to be Vlad's fault, he doubted the man would call for help if he was guilty--and besides, Vlad looked like he needed assistance, himself.

On one level, Vlad was aware that people were talking to him. He saw Kane's face, and somewhere behind him was Luca; but then he was staring into that black water again, light ripples fading away to nothing.

He gave his head a fierce shake, and the pain helped him focus. "She... She fell down a well." Words felt thick and foreign on his tongue, and he practically spat them out. "Behind the curtain-- a tunnel, and a well. He followed me, but I had no intention of... then there was a splash. He went in after her, but when I looked there was nothing. Nothing, do you understand? It was not my fault, there was no time to even..." He stopped suddenly. What had he just said? Why was it so LOUD in here?

"She fell down a well," he repeated, his voice slightly stronger. "How, I do not know - but she has been unconscious for about... ten minutes? She has a pulse, but she needs a hospital."

Kane could see that Vlad was trembling--whether from the sheer effort, or...the cold? His lips looked blue, and Kane felt a stab of fear, deep in his gut.

"Vlad, you need to slow down. Who followed you? Who...tell me what happened."

He looked sharply to Luca.

"Can we call an ambulance or something?"

Luca already had his phone in his hand, and had started dialing at some point between Vlad's two mentions of the well. The glance he gave Kane was tense, but he nodded, and gave the Bellum Letale address calmly, answering questions--almost drowned, pulse, ten minutes. When that was done, he shoved his phone back in his pocket.

"Give her to me," he said, looking Vlad straight in the eyes. "She knows me, and you're in no condition to hold her, and you need to sit, calm down, and tell Kane what just happened. Slowly."

Instinct caused Vlad to grip her tighter, and he met Luca's gaze with as much steadiness as he could muster. The last thing he wanted to was hand the woman over to someone like him, but there were people all around and he had a point. His legs were almost entirely numb, and the fact that he was still standing was a minor miracle in itself.

"Fine." Slowly, with uncharacteristic gentleness, he eased Theresa into Luca's arm. It was then that he realized how exposed he was - he'd used his shirt to offer her some kind of warmth - and he folded his arms across his chest. All those masks were staring, and he didn't like it.

Kane was already pulling his jacket off--thank god this was a formal event--and he handed it to Vlad. It would have to do for now.

"Please tell me what happened, Vlad," he repeated, eyes searching and desperate. He had to know what had reduced him to this level of uncertainty, this...fear that he was so unused to seeing. For now, he ignored Luca--the most pressing thing in his mind was to understand the events that had taken place while everyone was busy fucking around.

Though he was surprised to have Vlad so readily agree, he didn't let it show on his face. There was no victory in his heart, just foreboding in his chest. Theresa was a proud woman, and seeing her helpless would have been profoundly unsettling without the surge of genuine concern.

And seeing Vlad without his usual self possession was oddly frightening in and of itself.

Taking her still form from Vlad, he yelled at someone until they cleared a table, on which he set her down gently. His eyes flickered up and down her body as he checked her pulse, her breathing--though every few seconds he would yank his head back up to look at Kane and Vlad. He was still close enough to hear, and was desperate to understand the night's events.

He examined her clothing as he monitored the conversation, trying to figure out if there was something to loosen to help her regain consciousness--but her breathing seemed fine...

He hesitated before accepting the coat, pulling it over his shoulders in an attempt to draw some warmth from it. "He knew." He let out a sudden laugh, humorless and bordering on hysterical. "He told me once, did you know that? He told me he did not fear death."

Everyone in the room would blame him, he was sure. They all knew that he and Emil hated each other, and there would be no doubt in their minds that he'd killed him. Peter and Helena... would they even be able to look at him ever again? Could they find it within themselves to believe him?

Vlad took a deep breath before continuing, even though it turned into a cough. "I followed the woman - Theresa - when she went behind the curtain. I was-- the punch, and I was merely curious. There was some kind of tunnel, and it led to a room with a well. He followed me there, and we fought..." He brought a hand to his forehead, wincing slightly. His fingers roved over the top of his head and to the back, feeling dried blood there too. "Then there was a splash. She fell in somehow, and he went in after her... as did I. The water was so cold, and black as night. She must have been heavy, but I got out and pulled while he pushed. He was there, Kane. And then... he was not."

He looked up sharply, grasping Kane's shoulders. "No one will believe me, but you must. He made sure I had no time to act, and I could not have gotten him out without drowning myself."

It took Kane a minute to realize that the him Vlad kept referring to was indeed the only him in the building of any consequence. He froze, and was promptly grabbed around the shoulders. He forced himself to be calm, and to attempt to reason with Vlad, to cut through the fear and try to make him relax.

He had his hands raised, almost defensively, but after a moment he carefully rested them on Vlad's shoulders, attempting to keep the gesture comforting.

"Vlad. Listen to me. You're saying that Emil is dead? And you're absolutely sure? I...I mean, I believe you, I believe that he was that crazy--but...you're positive?"

It was all he could do to stop himself from running at Vlad and tackling him to floor, when he saw him touching Kane. But jealousy or not, Vlad was hurt, and Kane seemed to be handling things well, so he turned his attention back to Theresa, despite being at a loss for what to do.

Then he heard Kane say Emil, and he stood shock still and widened his eyes.

They fought, and now Emil was dead? And Theresa was unconscious? Had she seen something she wasn't meant to...? But what had Vlad done to her...?

Vlad nodded, vaguely aware of the fact that Luca could hear their conversation. He wouldn't believe him, but if the man so much as dared accuse him of anything, there was a distinct chance that he might get himself severely hurt. Vlad was in no mood for the man's idiotic behavior.

"I did not see it happen. Theresa fell in the well while he was bashing my head against the ground, and he was first to go down and try to help her." He continued to avoid using Emil's name, at least for the time being. "She was unconscious when he went down, but he could not get her out himself. I went in to help, but in the end I lifted her out while he pushed. She was alive-- she had a pulse, and she was breathing. There was some kind of scream - it sounded so far away - and when I looked down, there was nothing. He... he drowned."

Vlad shook his head. "Do you understand? She was unconscious, and my word is worth nothing in this building. No one will believe anything I say, and that is exactly what he wanted."

Kane took a slow breath in, his heart pounding so hard that he was sure that half the room would be able to hear it.

"He was insane," he said, a little more sharply than he thought he was capable of, "everyone knew he was threatening you, and...I mean, he did stuff to me, for fuck's sake. If there's even an investigation, all they have to do is take one look in his room! Theresa's going to be okay, and...things will be fine. They will. You just need to calm down, and...sit."

As soon as he said it, he turned his attention away from Vlad's face, and focused instead on the room around them, looking for a chair that he could use. There was one not far off--it was closer to the table where Theresa was now laying, and Luca. Without giving Vlad space or time to argue, he took his hand and led him over, urging him to sit down.

Luca bit into his cheek hard enough to draw blood, eyes troubled. It was true that he didn't trust Vlad, but he certainly didn't trust Emil, either, having never met the man. Ultimately, Vlad had only gotten into a fist fight with him--he played dirty, but not any more than Luca was used to, really, which was part of why he was surprised to have lost. And Vlad had only yelled at Kane, but Emil had nearly killed him...

And then Vlad and Kane where at the table where he stood holding Theresa's cold hand, feeling useless.

"I'm a lawyer," he offered, finally, grudgingly, because he was. "And I know some great lawyers. If the man was as crazy as people say he is...you should be fine, Vlad." It was hard to say, and he said it slowly, with effort.

"If there's anything I can do to help...." he was looking at Kane and not at Vlad, but he meant it.

After all, Kane believed Vlad, and he trusted Kane.

He had discarded his own jacket some time ago, but he had laid a tablecloth over Theresa's body.

Theresa wasn't moving, and she wasn't responding to anything anyone did. Her breathing was so shallow, it barely stirred, but she was breathing. There wasn't a mark on her, except the black netting that went over her shoulders and covered all that soaked, blood red velvet was slightly torn on one arm. The plain mask was, of course, long missing.

Emerging from an alcove, with barely more than his pants on, it took Trenton a long moment to realization that something was wrong. That masks were standing around, mouths agape with their staring. A brief inspection of his surroundings ensured that it wasn't him they were staring at. While he might have typically taken offense to being such background fodder, that's when he noticed the girl on the table. Luca at her side, along with two strangers. His only memory of Kane being a fuzzy one.

Pulling his own mask off and dropping it into a nearby chair, he approached Luca. A little drunk, a little drugged the fuck up, but miraculously steady on his feet. "Did anyone call an ambulance?"

Two-toned eyes hesitant on the girl with the ripped dress, one he recognized. He ground the heel of his hand against a tattoo licked collar. Already pulling his phone out of his pocket and backing toward the exit. "I'll meet the EMTs in the lobby and show them the way down."

Something occurred to him as he was storming across the floor, between the formal hemlines and elegant masks. "Isn't somebody in this building a fucking doctor?"

Reed hadn't been paying attention to the gathering crowd, too intent on her task of downing as much alcohol as possible. Eventually, though, the scene caught her interest and she wandered over just in time to hear the guy--Trenton?--say "Isn't somebody in this building a fucking doctor?"

She blinked and elbowed people out of the way to see the action, curious now. When she reached the front of the crowd she stopped.

And she stared.

She pushed her mask up, not breathing. Theresa was lying on the table, her dress torn, her face icy and pale and totally immobile. Reed felt sick to her stomach, her head felt hazy with the alcohol and shock, her vision started to swim. She almost staggered over, but locked her knees.

She looked up at the only other people with their masks off. Vlad, Kane, and Luca. And Trenton, who was backing out of the room, phone in hand. "What happened?" she said, barely able to speak. She continued, louder, "What the fuck happened?" She wasn't crying, but she felt like any moment she might start.

There were far too many people for Vlad's liking. Kane, Luca, and now some stranger whose voice sounded vaguely familiar. For one of the first times in is life he allowed himself to be led to a chair and sat, his shivering beginning to fade away.

He didn't want to think about an investigation, about police coming and sticking their nose into all this. He doubted they would be able to make the connection to murders occurring halfway across the world, but he didn't want the hassle.

"You believe me." At least there was one person who would believe him. Kane wouldn't turn against him... he wouldn't fall for Emil's treachery. "Thank you."

Vlad turned his head towards the newest arrival, a dark-haired young woman who he didn't recognize. He assumed she was just another curious bystander, and he wanted her to go away. "She fell into a well," he responded, his voice hollow.

"She fell into a well," Reed said flatly. Her hands were shaking. "How the fuck did she fall, did someone push her, is she even breathing?" Reed counted the steps she took towards her sister: One, two, she faltered on the third.

Instead of looking at Theresa, she turned and stared at the three maskless men. "How?" she repeated.

"Thanks, Trent," Luca said, grateful to have one of his friends there, and even more grateful that Trent had immediately snapped into the situation and picked something useful to do.

Unforunately, since Trenton left and Kane was busy with Vlad, that left him to speak with Reed. Luca suspected he was not the person she would have picked to be holding her sister's hand.

"Reed," he said, loud enough to get her attention. "She's breathing, and she has a pulse. I haven't found a head injury, so I don't know why she..." he trailed off, wanting to say she'll be okay, because that's what he did, he said the right things--but it seemed too big a lie.

"I don't think she was pushed in," he added softly, carefully keeping his eyes downcast, not letting his eyes flicker in the least towards Vlad, even though they wanted to.

Reed's chin went up defiantly. "Why am I not surprised, Lebeau," she snapped. Her heart wasn't in it, though. She'd had it with her sister's weird bouts of unconsciousness. She wasn't supposed to care about Theresa.

She crossed her arms and huffed. "Has anyone with, you know, a medical degree looked at her, maybe?"

"There's an ambulance on the way. You can complain about the wait when they get here," Kane said, perhaps a bit sharply, addressing the woman that he'd ben previously ignoring--he'd hardly glanced at Trenton, either, because honestly? He'd rather put a bullet in his own head.

He turned his attention back to Vlad.

"Of course I believe you. This will work itself out. I swear it will, and I'll do whatever it takes to make sure of it."

He looked to Luca, still ignoring Trenton and Reed.

"Still nothing?" He asked, nodding to the unconscious woman on the table.

Vlad didn't want to say anything. He was cold in a way he'd never been before, and he didn't feel like himself - it was strange, to feel so disconnected from oneself. He was always the one in control of every situation, no matter how sudden or unexpected. Nothing ever moved too quickly for him - until now.

But if this was Theresa's sister, then he needed to tell her what had occurred... whether she believed him or not.

"Your sister fell down a well. It was at the end of a tunnel, behind a curtain in one of the colored rooms." Vlad's voice was surprisingly steady as he looked up at her. "I was not there when it actually happened, but I heard the splash and--" He paused. "Emil and I went to investigate. Between the two of us, we managed to get her out. She was unconscious but breathing when Emil went into the well after her, and she was the same when I lifted her out."

"No change," Luca muttered, looking at Kane and carefully ignoring Reed and Vlad. Personally, he was hoping to avoid getting caught between them--if Reed chose Vlad to flip out on, he had no objections, and he was vaguely behind the idea that she had a right to some flipping out since her sister had almost drowned. Still, he would not mind Vlad bearing the brunt of her grief, not at all. The other option was taking it himself.

And if Reed snapped at Kane again, unconscious sister or no, he was going to have to say something. That would probably end poorly--but no one was going to get to yell at Kane in front of him, whatever the circumstances.

Weary of everyone, he looked back down at Theresa, taking in her still features--skin so pale behind the coal dark hair, lips red despite the cold. For a moment he felt a flicker of remembered warmth in his chest, thinking of their time together, how she had come to trust him, how she had melted under his touch, and how he had then shrugged and left.

She didn't look dead, despite the unnatural stillness, now that he examined her closely.

Slowly, reverently, feeling like the air was weighted down by an old dream, he lowered his face to hers, and placed a soft, chaste kiss upon her lips.

His felt like the room tilted around them--

and nothing happened.

"I'm sorry, Theresa," he whispered, before straightening up and blinking, feeling a strange and unexpected disappointment.

He turned away from the table, rubbing his fingers against his temple, wishing the fucking ambulance would just get here already.

((Wow I am late. Sorry! D:))

Reed felt dizzy and stupid and totally out of her element, here. As did most things, it just made her angry. "Yeah, I got the whole 'fell into a fucking well' thing. I want to know why. The fuck was she doing there?"

When Luca leaned down and kissed her, Reed felt something snap. It wasn't an angry something. She felt like her ribs were collapsing in on themselves. She hugged herself. Don't touch her, she wanted to say. He had no right, none of these guys had a right to even be here worrying about her sister, but there was nothing she could do except wait for the ambulance. Which was taking its fucking time.

She massaged the bridge of her nose in irritation.

((No problem :D))

Something about this woman rubbed Vlad the wrong way, but he knew snapping at her wouldn't solve anything. As of now, he was the only person who'd been present at the time of Theresa's accident. He knew it looked bad, but there was nothing he could do to change the circumstances.

"I do not know why she was there." How did she expect anyone to know why? Only Theresa could answer that.

"Oh, right. I'm fucking sure." She stared at Vlad for a moment, and then threw her hands up in the air. She could hear the ambulance in the distance. "Whatever, I don't even care. At least she's not dead." She crossed her arms and seethed like a child. Fuck it.
