Everyone is likely equally exhausted, and by now I'm sure many of you have gone to bed, but I felt like I ought to say this now, for everyone to read at their own discretion.

If you met a man last night going by the name 'Jackson Miller' under my apartment number, he is not who he says he is. His name is Professor James Moriarty. He's I can't believe I'm saying this from the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Please believe me when I say that he's extremely dangerous and you should stay away from him. He's the prototype for the modern super villain. He literally runs all of the crime in London. He is cold, ruthless, will do whatever it takes to get what he wants, and he is more than willing to kill people who get in his way.

I felt like I had to say something so that he didn't have the chance to go undetected again.

That said, [...] I'm not him.

needless to say, I'm not going to be in the safe room any time soon

I don't I didn't

I'm sorry.

Can you guide him at all in that state? We've not met, at least not here, I believe. I'm Ella.

No, we haven't. Jonathan.

And no. I tried, believe me. he made threats All I can do is hope that next month will be better, somehow, though I don't know if it gets better.

If by better you mean they get weaker, no, it does not get better. Moriarty was- is amazingly brilliant. Can his talents be put to better use, perhaps? Can we distract him?

Put to use?

No. He's going to try to get to Holmes and Watson. Unless by 'put to use' you mean giving him some kind of equally destructive project. He doesn't do anything that's not for his own gain.

I'm sorry if I sound like a pessimist, but I don't know if that's possible. For one thing, I couldn't think of it. Someone else would have to, since clearly if I came up with the idea he would know about it before it even went into motion. For another, he's not exactly easy to fool.

You laud this man for being brilliant while simultaneously suggesting that he can be lead about like a dog on a leash.

You would do best to accept that these [...] people will not be swayed simply because it is convenient for us to sway them.

I think if Moriarty could be swayed, it would be to everyone's benefit. I don't think he can, but I don't fault her for suggesting it.

Suggesting something that would be nice while simultaneously being entirely impossible is not helpful. It would be nice if Griffin were to disappear and take his damned gift with him, but it won't happen.

Perhaps instead of attempting to mollify Moriarty, you could focus on protecting the people he is after.

[info]dierache
2010-05-29 05:41 am UTC (link)
Since it's not impossible under all circumstances, it was still a fair suggestion.

Or, better yet, keeping him contained, which will end up being the likely response, I think.

One does not put a madman to work. Griffin would be disgusted.

That is much more reasonable. There was a great deal of noise on the first floor over the past two days - I believe that is where a containment room has been built. Perhaps that could be of use.

I laud the character for being brilliant, yes, but that does not mean we cannot, in our own right, be equally brilliant. We have knowledge they do not, time they do not and opportunity they do not.

And this comes from someone who would very much like her tale to have everything she desires, so I am not biased against our stories.

Mister...?

Not all tales have that level of consciousness, I've found. Most, in fact, do not. But your warning is a good one. Moriarty is very dangerous, Iris, as I'm sure you know. I am not sure I would even consider his defeat canon, as it was clearly revisionist.

Personal bias means nothing. You are going about this process incorrectly. If you wish to be equally brilliant, you should stop being so dense.

I am simply cautioning you against assuming that having time and knowledge immediately puts you at an advantage. The man is brilliant for a reason. Intelligence is not rooted merely in the use of the past, but in the ability to shape the present and therefore the future. A brilliant Moriarty will be able to make full use of his present, and that is something that cannot be prepared for.

I am Doctor Archer.

[info]bookshelved

You assume that a brilliant Moriarty will have full use of the present. That does not need to be the case. In telling us about his tale, Jonathan has given us power over it. This is something Moriarty clearly did not intend.

Also, I would argue that by being merged with us, our tales are significantly different than they were when created. By simply being here we have changed them. That means the endings can change, Doctor Archer. Stories all have a climax; if it changes, even in the slightest amount, you have a completely different ending.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]sneakingaround
2010-05-29 05:55 am UTC (link)
Knowing of something does not give you power over it. It gives the thing power over you, if you aren't careful. If Moriarty contacted him in any way, you would be doing yourself a disservice and dealing him a grave insult to assume that he is ignorant of these reactions. Griffin knows what I'm doing. He's watching my every move.

He's still

I am not speaking of endings. I am speaking of possibilities. In a way, being freed of his story's natural ending is a freedom to Moriarty, not a constraint. The calendar of the Invisible Man can be created. I am not urging that you take my advice, but that you consider all the ramifications of every new rule that you impose on these tales as they translate into our bodies.

[info]bookshelved

I do not think for a moment, doctor, that our tales are going to be content to live for a day a month within us. That begs the question of what we want to do about the situation, because the moment we cease actively working on it is the moment they will overpower us.

Living is, as I am sure you know, a powerful motivator. We are both in the way of our tales living and responsible for it. They need us. We do not need them to live. It is the only bit of power we have in this.

And yes, I am aware that in having this conversation your tale, which may be dangerous, might have access to the information. But we are stronger if we work together, and communication cannot be kept from our stories at all times. It is a liability we shall have to compensate for.
