[She hesitates, but she has already given her name, and can't hold it in confidence. There is no one to give her introduction, so she must give it herself]

I beg your pardon, we haven't been introduced. [It's almost a warning.] I am Miss Thorpe.

Jackson Miller. Wonderful to meet you, I'm sure.

Locked to 206

Miss Adler.

[Smooth though disconcerted.]

Professor. This is a surprise.

[His affect of humble, innocent speech drops, but not all the way. He's still just Professor Moriarty, low-level criminal, after all.]

That it is. And what brings you to this miserable place? Or are you just another unfortunate prisoner?

[Oh, she doesn't want to tell him, but she knows too long of a pause, and he will notice. Professor Moriarty, low-level criminal, is smart and capable and has both Irene's caution and tentative professional courtesy--but not quite trust.]

Mmm. [It's a sound through her lips she makes while thinking, and she does it to distract men, not herself.] My adversary is here.

[He perks up at that, but not audibly, though he can be heard shifting in his chair.] Adversary?

[Her face is not visible, so she doesn't have to control it, but her voice is the same cultured smoothness. Irene Adler is a star of the opera stage, and if she so chose her voice would sing nightingales down from branches. Right now she uses it to sound utterly calm, even faintly distant, from the topic at hand.]

Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

[With intentional lightness.]

I played a small trick on him once, and it captures his attention. I enjoy the game. Why are you here?

I have no desire to be.

How captured, exactly, is his attention?

[Oh no.]

Not so much. He knows I'm here, that's about all, I think. He is distracted by his silly projects.

Why do you ask, professor?

Sherlock Holmes is the most talented private detective in the empire. Is it unusual that my employer should want him investigated before he should have a chance to investigate us?

A little leverage, if you please, Irene.

[A short pause, and she desperately searches for things she can give him that will make him less interested, not more. She knows Moriarty's employer--as she knows of him, thinks of him, is told it is him--is a ruthless man and his presence here (she takes it for granted) puts Holmes in far more danger than he would be alone.]

His friend is here as well. The doctor. [Iris knows that Micah can take care of himself, better than Eliot and better than Watson, and she hangs onto the hope the latter will stay with Holmes where he can.] They are great friends, and it's unlikely you will find better leverage than that.

[She sounds too eager to fob him off. He doesn't like it, not even the tiniest bit. So he pushed further, listening closely for her reaction.]

Excellent. Then get me something from both of them. You are a woman of some skill. No doubt you can manage it. Even pit them against one another, perhaps.

[A brief moment of surprise at this suggestion.] Doctor Watson is married and greatly endeared to his wife. [She did not mention that Mary Watson was not in Bellum Letale.] I do not think Holmes is even of the kind susceptible to the skills you kindly mention. [It is a rather desperate line.]

[Clearly amused.] As if that has ever been an obstacle for you in the past.

[Highly desperate. He takes note.] Perhaps for a normal woman, yes, but you are exceptional, Irene. My employer expects above and beyond the range of skill in such...social combat that the average woman possesses.

[His voice takes on a hard, cold, frightening edge.]

Get it done.
