[A short pause, and she desperately searches for things she can give him that will make him less interested, not more. She knows Moriarty's employer--as she knows of him, thinks of him, is told it is him--is a ruthless man and his presence here (she takes it for granted) puts Holmes in far more danger than he would be alone.]

His friend is here as well. The doctor. [Iris knows that Micah can take care of himself, better than Eliot and better than Watson, and she hangs onto the hope the latter will stay with Holmes where he can.] They are great friends, and it's unlikely you will find better leverage than that.

[She sounds too eager to fob him off. He doesn't like it, not even the tiniest bit. So he pushed further, listening closely for her reaction.]

Excellent. Then get me something from both of them. You are a woman of some skill. No doubt you can manage it. Even pit them against one another, perhaps.

[A brief moment of surprise at this suggestion.] Doctor Watson is married and greatly endeared to his wife. [She did not mention that Mary Watson was not in Bellum Letale.] I do not think Holmes is even of the kind susceptible to the skills you kindly mention. [It is a rather desperate line.]

[Clearly amused.] As if that has ever been an obstacle for you in the past.

[Highly desperate. He takes note.] Perhaps for a normal woman, yes, but you are exceptional, Irene. My employer expects above and beyond the range of skill in such...social combat that the average woman possesses.

[His voice takes on a hard, cold, frightening edge.]

Get it done.

[She is chilled, and tries to hide it.]

I'm not working at the present.

[A pause. The next statement is cold, but amused at the idea he's entertaining.]

You've retired?

[Amused, still, but moving into dangerous territory.] Not a long holiday, I trust.

Within reason, obviously. Everyone deserves a holiday now and again.

I hadn't decided. [She knows the conversation is not going her way.] I was thinking Paris.

A lovely destination. I'll expect you to start when you arrive home-in a month, say.

I must ask, Irene. Why so reluctant?

[Bemused] Women and their fancies. You will have your holiday time, Irene, and then, this time next month, we'll discuss your efforts.

[A pause. Everything that follows is clipped, cool, and businesslike.]

May I remind you, Ms. Adler, that my employer's patronage has kept you comfortable in ways that your occupation as a vocalist [the word is heavy with scorn] could not. Employment within the organization is not something one retires from. It is something that one is retired from.

Have I made myself abundantly clear?

[A moment for her to find her courage and collect herself. Moriarty's threat is real, and she has seen the results of such retirement. Then, challenging,] You are so sure your organization still exists in twenty-first century New York, professor? And they will care whether or not I choose to play your game?
