Cappa bakery; Thursday afternoon; Sadie and Midian
Midian told Sadie she should stop by the bakery after the place closed. There was still about an hour to go before that time, but Sadie didn't want to wait. She wanted to get off the base ASAP and go do something distracting with someone who was nice and wouldn't put her through any sort emotionally-taxing trial. So after the interrogation and a good cry, Sadie left (with an annoying military escort that was sure not to attract any attention) to go to the bakery.
When they got to the door, Sadie turned to her companions and told them that they didn't have to go any further. She was going to be there for a while, and Midian was an ex-military dude. She would be fine. Once she finally got them off her back, she went inside.
Midian was in the back room, preparing all those things that would have to sit over night before they were finished for baking tomorrow when Sadie had entered. Miriam was manning the front at the moment after one of the part-timers had called in sick. She offered Sadie a smile when she'd entered and tried to keep the sympathetic look off of her face as best as she could. "Hey Sadie," She said when she'd finished climbing up on a back shelf to put a few items from the dishwasher away. She brushed off her hands and walked up to the counter. "Is this a personal or cheesy bread visit?" She asked since Midian had already explained that Sadie might stop by at some point.
Sadie gave Miriam a short wave before sticking both her hands in her pockets. "Personal," she said with a nod as she walked across the floor to the counter. "Midian's not expecting me for another hour or so, though."
Miriam waved off the second part of her comment and reached out to unlatch and lift up the end section of the counter. "Don't let him fool you, the end of the day's a cakewalk for him," She smirked and nodded toward the back. "Go on back, he'd just finishing up some work."
Midian had heard some of the voices as he finished setting up a couple of containers of dough. Some he put in on of the fridges, the others he put in specific cabinet areas that would stay cool and dry and the doughs could set. He didn't know it was Sadie though, until he heard Miriam telling the person to come on back. He looked at the clock to see if he'd lost track of time, but nope. He went over to one of the back sinks to wash his hands off since she was coming back.
Sadie smiled, partially because of the cake-related pun, and thanked Miriam before she headed on back. She took a look around the place and spotted Midian at a sink. She pulled her hand out of her pocket to give him a wave. "Hey, sorry I'm early."
Midian grinned when Sadie appeared. "Not at all," he shook his head as he turned off the sink and then dried his hands on the apron that was tied around his waist and folded down. It didn't really protect much since he folded it, so his t-shirt was dotted with dough, batter and flour, but it was pretty good to use as a towel to wipe his hands off throughout the day. It was after that that he got a look at Sadie. He frowned and asked, "Are you okay?" Before he could stop himself. he couldn't help it!
Sadie took a deep breath and rolled her eyes up to the side to cleanse herself of any urge to get weepy. Her eyes were kind of misty, though, when she shook her head and answered, "Not really."
Midian frowned and stepped closer. He was kind of getting used to initiating contact, at least with Sadie by now. She looked like she needed it though. So he reached out and wrapped his arms around her to pull her in for a hug. It was a tighter one than the ones out on her back steps had been.
It was also easier to hug when standing than when sitting next to each other on some wooden steps. She moved her arms around him and closed her eyes, breathing in slowly to chill herself out. She was quiet for a few moments before she was able to get herself to speak normally. "Ketty made me interrogate him," she finally explained.
Midian just waited. He felt a little weird, but whatever. He was being helpful, or trying to anyway. He frowned when she spoke. He wasn't very surprised by what she said though. "I'm sorry," He replied. "Do you want to talk about it, or no?" He asked afterward, leaning back just enough to look at her.
Sadie shrugged her shoulders up, even though she launched right into talking about it. "He looked awful. All beat up. And they made him sleep in a chair all night."
Midian attempted to be as passive, facial express wise, as possible about what she was telling him. He hadn't thought that Eli...or Gabriel or whoever the hell he was...had been a bad guy, just like everyone else in the damn town hadn't. The guy had always been friendly and helpful and all that and he and Sadie had been fairly happy. Now Midian kind of wanted to ask Ketty to take a shot or two at the guy. He wasn't going to tell Sadie that though. "It's just a tactic to keep him uncomfortable so he'll give over information with less of a fight. The chair stuff." He frowned a little. "I'm sorry to say that the beating him up part...any number of guards could be doing that, and a number of them would since people they know have died because of him." He added.
"It doesn't make it right, to be barbaric like that to him and be hypocritical...but he does have information they're going to need to keep the city safe from attack." He frowned. "I'm sorry Sadie. I know it couldn't have been easy to see that. He didn't...go after you or anything did he?" Probably not, or she probably wouldn't be here for a baking lesson.
Sadie shook her head. "He just sat. He yelled at Ketty, called her a coward. But he didn't do anything to me."
Midian nodded. "Have you come to a decision?" He asked. "About the love-hate thing?"
Sadie frowned and turned her eyes down. "They're probably going to kill him. So, hate." It seemed like the wiser route to take.
He furrowed his brow at her and tilted his head, looking at Sadie carefully a moment. "Forget the part where they might kill him." He said after a moment. "And give me an honest answer." He added, eyebrows arching.
Sadie glanced up at Midian for just a moment before bringing her eyes back down to the floor. She tried to think of a decent answer, and then shrugged. "I don't know," she said, even though she thought that might have been a cop out so she didn't have to admit the answer was love.
Midian squinted his eyes at her. Then he decided to drop the subject. He stepped back and clapped his hands together then. "Baking," He said before narrowing his eyes again for dramatics. "Intense...secret ingredient, Cappadocia baking." He nodded.
Sadie gave him a grateful smile when he started on the distraction. "Yeah," she nodded, stepping back and taking a look around the room. "Where do we start with this baking thing?"
"First thing's first," Midian turned around and started hobbling his way toward a rack in the back corner. His knee was always worse at the end of the day for obvious reasons. He let out a grunt a slightly exaggerated one, as he leaned over to reach a sack on the bottom rack. He tugged out a white apron from it and started to head back for Sadie, holding it up for show with a smirk. "Dough-protection." He grinned.
Sadie took the apron with a small smirk and unfolded it. She put the head-loop around her neck and looked at Midian. "Do I have to wear a chef's hat too?" she smirked a little wider as she tied the apron around her back.
Midian chuckled as he hobbled around the back areas gathering various items and setting them up on one of the large tables in the middle of the floor. "Don't rush it, Sadie. Work your way up to the big guns." He smirked.
"Do you wear a chef's hat?" Sadie asked, actually grinning now. She followed him around and held her hands up, waggling her fingers in an offer to help.
Midian bounced his eyebrows. "If I'm going to be out front? Yes," He nodded. "People get a kick out of it." He grinned. "And once we're done teaching you some Cappa-level baking skills, I might even give you your own chef's hat. I'm that generous." He grinned and patted the table next to where he was standing.
"Whoa," Sadie laughed a little. "I hope I can live up to your high standards." She walked over to where he tapped the table and looked up at him, awaiting further instructions.
Midian slid one of the large mixing bowls over in front of Sadie. He pointed to a large container of flour and then handed a measuring cup over and told her how much of it they would need. "I have a feeling you'll be able to with the right coaching." He smirked.
