F E R N ~ Alert
Who: Potted Fern, you and anyone you want to talk to.
Where: Floor 39, Common Dining Area
What: Just, you know, a fern.
Warnings: if you need them, let me know.
Notes: This is a FERN post, ladies and gentlemen, first of it's kind. That means behind the cut are details on what you can do here! (to save space!) please, read on! LJ-Cut text sung to the tune of Just a Girl by No Doubt. You love me, you're welcome.

Notes: Okay folks, this is the first of the Open Fern Posts. What that means is this: did you want a random setting for a log? do you want to be overheard by one, potted fern? Here's a chance! I'll even make sure to start you off with an open for Steve. Treat this as a party-style post and tag into opens. Anything said in this post WILL be overheard by the potted fern hanging out. You've been warned. You can poke the fern, water the fern, but you don't know the fern is not a fern. The fern is just a FERN. Go Forth. Amuse me. *coughs*

It had taken Rogue a few days to figure out the best way to slip into a room and not be caught on camera entering the room. Or exiting afterward. The red-haired woman was still hurting, broken ribs took forever to heal, as did the other breaks and strains, and she was bored. But everyone was being so helpful, and open, and it was a delight. It made every single ache worth it. She still hadn't found Loki, yet, but there were so many interesting things...

She deftly slipped into the Common Dining room and settled down in the corner of the room by another small plant. She'd checked the area out a couple times, and decided that this was perfect and it was just outside of camera range. The bonus was she'd look like she'd hobbled over, sat down, then eventually hobbled out. She'd made a habit of coming here during the day so it seemed like a habit already. She looked around, and once sure no one was around, she focused and in the time it took the breath the Rogue was gone, and a living fern sat on the end table where she had been near, next to a vase containing fresh-cut sunflowers. With nothing to do for a few hours, she was content to sit, as a fern, and overhear the conversations that flowed around her.

The more you hear, the more you know.

Steve was finished with a meeting with the minds that were working on his problem, and instead of going straight to the penthouse, he sat down in the common dining room, with a notebook out, and more or less settled in to relax a little. He'd set up by a window, so he could look out over the city. It wasn't a sketchbook but he was doodling absently anyway, the good Captain had too much on his mind as of late.

He lifted a cup of water, tired from the day already, and took a drink. He'd forgotten just how exhausting it was to be him sometimes. He had not been a healthy young man, and he hadn't been up for much lately reverting back to that state.

His pencil stopped on the page when a shadow fell over it and he looked up to see who was there. The lack of good senses was also grating on his nerves - just about anyone could sneak up on him and he was kind of hating that.

Captain Rogers, I’m sorry I startled you. I don’t know that we’ve met. I’m Moira Kinross.” Moira had never forgotten how difficult it I had been for Charles when he had lost the use of his legs. She imagined that adjusting to his new limitations might be very similar.

“Do you mind if I sit down?,”

"It's fine, I was just thinking and not paying attention." He was so used to relying on parts of him that were no longer there, old habits died hard. It was taking some getting used to, and he really didn't enjoy it.

"Nice to meet you - do you prefer Ms. Kinross or Moira?" He asked as he gestured the to seat across from him, "please, sit."

"Either is fine, Captain Rogers," Moira took a seat and surveyed the skyline of the city outside the window. "I came here as girl," she smiled at the memory, "It's changed so very much, hasn't it?

"It's changed a lot over the years. It was a bigger shock to see the difference between when I was on ice, to now." he shook his head a bit, "and now, everything feels weird. I think that's just a sudden shift in perception coloring things, though."

He looked out over the city, sighed, then back to her. "It's always hard, change."

Tony walked into the common area, spying Steve and veering off in his direction. He walked in, sat down across from him, and drew in a deep breath.
A breath so deep, that it seemed he had many profound things to say and there wasn't enough air in existence to say it all.

"...hi," he started with, since that was a good opener. "First, I think Genosha melted my brain. Second, before we even get into the Island from Hell, have ever heard of Just For Men? I'm thinking maybe I need to cover my gray. They make Just For Beards too. There's a saying about the carpet matching the drapes, but we're gonna just say the carpet's my goatee and not anything lower than that. I'm holding off in case it looks like this whole sad desperate anti-aging thing, like the next step is botox. Which means goodbye smiling, or any other facial expression...and that's why I'm asking a guy who doesn't age fast at all."

Tony pressed one hand to his face and sat there blissfully silent. For once in his life.

With an expression like that, Steve braced for a truly classic Tony word vomit and he was not disappointed. Confused, as always, but not disappointed.

"I am pretty sure grey is distinguished. I don't want to know about any hair other than the one on your head, though I really am not sure why you're coming at me with your, I literally have no advice in this situation." But he was also used to that.

"And hey, I look even younger now." Done day he never sassed back.

"You're getting sassy in your younger age," Tony said, dropping his hand down. "I approve. I'd ask Pep or Happy about it if they weren't busy or...unhappy, in Happy's case. And I don't want to announce the whole hey, your dad is old thing to Darcy or Morgan."

He slumped down in the chair a little and wrinkled his nose up.

"You're not going to get stuck like this forever, Steve. The best in the genetic bizz is working on it. And if there's one thing I believe on an almost religious level, it's science."

"Tony, I've always been sassy, you just usually do it for me." He grinned a bit, "does Happy ever actually smile? I can't think of a time I have seen him smile. To be fair, I am pretty sure both of your girls know you're old. I'm sure Morgan thinks you're, like, eighty."

He ran his fingers over the bridge of his nose, "I know. It's just been an adjustment. I can't run up the stairs - do you have any idea how weird that is?" Steve hated being down for the count, he'd still throw himself onto trouble for everyone, it would just be less effective.

Gamora left the gym after a long session with the heavy bag, and got in the elevator, getting off in the common area to search for Terran snacks.

She leaned into the fridge, pulling out a bottle of green juice, and taking a long swig....

And then nearly spitting it out all over the counter. "This is disgusting," she said out loud, making a disgusted face.

Passing through on his way to the library, Sam couldn't help but stop and laugh at Gamora's face. "Yeah, those are definitely an acquired taste," he said. "But since some of us aren't blessed with superior genetics, we do what we have to do."

He hadn't actually met her yet, so he figured that he should also introduce himself, especially after laughing at her. "Sam Wilson. Falcon," he said, holding out his hand to shake.

"Some of us do," Sam said. "I was working with T'Challa on setting up some outreach programs for the Black community here and in LA. Unfortunately, now that he no longer remembers the Prime universe, that's come to an end."

It was far from being the worst thing that had happened around here, though it had left him feeling at loose ends. "Before I met Steve I was running support groups for veterans with PTSD. Tony and I were talking about me setting up something like that for the folks who have been escaping from Genosha," he said.

Kitty and OTA (multiples okay)
[info]justaphase
2020-09-04 10:28 pm UTC (link)
After a couple of weeks, Kitty was starting to venture out of her room and spend more time in the common areas of the Tower. She still wasn't one hundred percent comfortable yet, but she was getting there.

She started a fresh pot of coffee and then looked around, noticing a few of the plants were looking a bit dry. Luckily, there was a watering can in one of the cabinets, so she filled it and went around to water all of them. By the time she finished, her coffee was ready, so she poured a mug and sat down in one of the comfortable chairs with a book.

Glancing up from her book, Kitty smiled as she watched him moonwalk into the room. "Oh, uh, it's called A Separate Peace. It's an older book that I read in high school. September is Banned Books month and I found it in the library, so decided to re-read it."

Yes, she was aware that she sounded like a giant nerd.

Whoa..... You’re reading a banned book? Banned like Slaughter House Five right?“. Peter had not read either ‘A Separate Peace’ or ‘Slaughter House Five,“ however having watched the Holy Epic Footloose, he was familiar with the concept of book burning and it’s logical and natural consequence..... fun-hating.

“That’s badass.....” Growing up on the Elector he had not had a lot of opportunities for reading the classic Terran literature. Yondu had believed in the importance of education- it’s difficult to plan a heist if you can’t read schematics or background info, but the non felonious section of the Elector’s small library had been limited to “1000 Best Interspecies Fart Jokes, the Comic Book edition of the Xenobian Kama Sutra, a story of a boxer who was rather like Stakar, and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

None of these seemed like books the girl in front of him would be interested in hearing about, “So why did it get banned?”

Kitty and Raven

2020-09-05 03:39 am UTC (link)
Despite wanting to stay in her room while she was still blue, the loneliness was starting to get to Raven. Oh, she wasn't ready to venture out into the crowded streets of the city, but Friday assured her that there were other parts of the tower that she could visit, but weren't always too crowded. Thanks to the voiceless AI's directions, she found the dining room and was relieved to only see one person in there at the moment.

Here went nothing, right?

After pouring herself a cup of coffee from the pot that looked pretty fresh, she hesitated, then slowly walked over to the other woman. "You're...Kitty, right? Mind if I join you?"

Kitty looked up for a book and nodded. "Of course. Raven, right?" She was glad that the other girl had ventured out despite the impression she'd gotten from their network discussion that she was planning to stay in her own room.

"What are you reading?" She asked, figuring she should probably make an effort here - after all, if she was going to be living around others right now, she should know some things about them.

Pete is just passing through....
[info]mister_wisdom
2020-09-04 11:18 pm UTC (link)
Pete had daily tasks. Like bothering his contacts, yelling at things, melting the cabinet handles in his apartment, and - his favorite - accusing the Starbucks in the Tower lobby of putting addictive substances in the flavored syrups. On his way to do that, Pete was puffing on a cigarette like an angry coal engined choo-choo train, thundering down the tracks right into the common area.

As he exited the hallway, a ceiling voice he had learned to dread announced, 'There is no smoking allowed in designated public areas. Sprinkler system activation in ten...nine...eight...'

Pete grumbled and looked around for anything he could use for a makeshift ashtray. He spied a fern in a ridiculous boxy thing and promptly gnashed the cigarette out in the dirt, avoiding the fronds and the roots. Luckily. Still, it was very stinky, and there was a humiliating little plume of smoke that wafted upward.

"Bugger off, Alexa," Pete grumbled as he headed to the nearest elevator.

After he left, Friday pinpointed the smoke sensors and a single high tech sprinkler system activated over the plant for approximately twenty seconds, overflowing the fern pot and leaving a puddle on the tabletop.

Charles wouldn't say he was feeling his age, what if he had parked his wheelchair in a sunny spot in the common room? He was deep in work on his plans for his home, creating his wishlist to upgrade the run-of-the-mill infirmary that was tucked in the corner of the mansion's basement, into a state of the art medical unit.

An email popped up on his tablet, a cordial message from his friend Brene, asking him to blurb her new book, and he smiled, grateful that his friends didn't believe all the slander that had been thrown around while he was missing the last year. Charles replied, giving her the address to have her publisher send him a galley and flipped back to hospital furnishings company website.

Christine had had a day . It was getting harder to juggle all her responsibilities, but she didn't mind it. Stephen had been reminding her that she could actually get a salary from Tony and start paying off the credit cards, but really, what was the point there? The debt kept her going, kept her motivated and also ... she'd grown comfortable with it.

What she wasn't so comfortable with was the fact that she'd picked the wrong shoes today. Normally, she liked her hospital appropriate crocs but nooooo, she thought a nice pair of flats with appropriate insoles would work. And then there was an emergency appendectomy, more gunshot wounds, a random meeting with the head of insurance (gag) and now she was tired. And yet back at the Tower to check in with Bruce, and the rest of the gang.

Heading to the common room, she noted the fern in the corner. Was it always there? Not that she really paid attention to plants other than to note how green it was. "Hey," she called out, noticing that someone else was here. She hadn't had the luxury of officially meeting the Professor, but she'd been curious.

And now here he was. "Hope I'm not intruding," she added, heading to the microwave. Why yes, she was about to microwave her cup of tea. She didn't know if he'd be offended but this was the third she'd tried to drink it and she didn't want to throw it away.

With a smile, she leaned against the counter and faced him. "Feel like chatting? I tend to talk a lot, and I'm usually too tired to notice social norms, so if you want some peace and quiet, let me know and I'll be happy to slink into a corner."

The microwave dinged and she pulled out her mug. A bit too hot but she was sure she wouldn't be drinking it anytime soon. She had talking to do! Sitting down near him, she put her feet up on a chair and gave a shrug. "To answer your question, my day was fine. A usual ER shift. Apart from helping Bruce here, I work at Metro General as an ER surgeon, which with all acute care means I actually do a million things, and not always just surgery." She tested her drink and took a small sip. "Sometimes, I don't feel like going back to my apartment -- I don't actually live here with everyone else. Something something feminist independent woman can do this by herself something something."

Tilting her head, she smiled. "And you do sound like you know what you're talking about. I take it the professor honorific isn't just that -- you actually used to teach? And ...in a medical setting maybe?"
