It was an improvement. More often than not, it seemed like they ended up being side by side when crap was going down. Not a bad thing - when crap was going down - but more like one of those semi-friendships of convenience.

He debated going over, but being far more quiet than Sam, Bucky thought it was better to maintain some space. A wave and a nod in passing seemed like a good part of a building process.

At least they weren't briefly arguing about moving the seat up again.

Not arguing about anything was a good start. Especially with what Steve was planning tonight and knowing they would most likely both be standing up there next to him.

Sam realized he needed another beer before the fireworks started and had to cross right by Bucky to get one, so he paused instead of passing by without comment. "You need another?" he asked, holding up his empty bottle.

Well if Sam would've moved the seat up, then things would've been fine. It was cramped back there for a guy with a metal arm. C'moooooon.

And even though he knew what Steve was planning, Bucky wasn't coming out of his hiding spot. There were too many military people there, too many people that wanted to get in on the good side with Captain America and the Avengers. That wasn't where Bucky wanted to be, when he would be arrested for extradition, and this government probably had a metric ton of questions about him, HYDRA, and what happened in D.C. with those helicarriers....

Sam was meant to stand up there with Steve, not Bucky. And not going near the drink table was good, since by then his bottle was nearly running on empty.

"Yeah please," Bucky said with a node, holding up his bottle and took that last swig. "Thanks, Sam."

"No problem, man," Sam said, making his way over to grab a few drinks and returning in a matter of minutes, handing a bottle to Bucky.

He'd argue that having a metal arm didn't necessitate extra leg room. It wasn't like it was a metal leg or something. Still, he was making an effort. Especially since Bucky had been supportive of Steve passing the shield to him. "You sticking around for the fireworks?"

Hey, that metal arm was bulky too and he was an inch or two taller than Sam. Three guys in a Volkswagen wasn't one of Steve's better ideas, but they were in a pinch and it was inconspicuous as far as vehicles went. No one would ever suspect them of puttering around in that thing.

Bucky remembered being crammed back there and how his butt started to fall asleep. It kinda made him wish that he had a metal leg, so he could've kicked the back of the seat while squirming around. But he couldn't mention that just yet, since Sam brought him a beer.

"Yeah, I want to make sure Steve and Peg are okay," Bucky admitted, pausing to take a drink. "I know it'd be stupid as hell for anyone to start anything here. Old habit, I guess."

He looked over at Sam, breaking his watch for a few seconds. He supposed he could spare them, considering there was a Norse God wandering around.

"What about you? Gonna beat the crowd and bail before the end?" he asked Sam.

	Sam shook his head. "Nah, I figured I'd stick around, make sure everything goes okay." He didn't anticipate any issues, but would prefer to be close in case anything did happen. This made things easier, that they were both on the same wavelength. Bucky relaxed a little, even if he knew several people would protect Steve just as much as Steve wanted to protect everyone else. It was a load off knowing that Sam was at the forefront, precisely where Bucky couldn't be.

He took a long drink out of the bottle before saying, "Good. I feel better knowing you're up close. I'm not..." He shook his head and rolled his eyes a little. "...a spotlight kinda guy, anyway."

Sam was a better choice for Steve's shield for that very reason. There were fewer hangups and Sam talked to people with a lot more ease than Bucky could.

Bucky smiled and made a little toasting motion with the bottle to Sam, before he could take off.

"Sure. If you hear a shot, grab your co-owned shield and cover him and Peg. I'll take care of the rest."

Bucky decided to head off toward what he thought was an even more removed but a much better vantage point. It was nice being on the same page with someone who had the same loyalties to Steve that he had.

Next time though, he was riding shotgun and Sam could sit in the back.
