The last thing he was doing was checking her out and so he gave her a look that was like a hard pass and started watching the people milling around again.

No, he didn't agree, and she worked for SHIELD, so he thought she might know that parties were a great place for a hit to take place, particularly with silencers or poisons. He knew, because he'd done it before.

But since he didn't hear her footsteps heading in the direction of away, he said in a low voice, "Not everyone's a party person."

	Darcy was not so easily dissuaded, so she stood there, studying him while he people-watched. The thought of a party being used for nefarious purposes definitely never occurred to her, especially not a party populated with so many superheroes. "So why'd you come?" she asked when he spoke. Any public situation could be used to scope out a target or watch their movements and mannerisms, or to take a shot from a far up sniper position. Bucky was glad there was someone running interference at least, but he would always have Steve's six o'clock. Without wavering. No matter how many other sets of eyes were on the lookout.

"For Steve," Bucky said simply, because it was the obvious reason. It was Steve's birthday and Bucky was where he was most comfortable, in the background, where attention wasn't going to be directed at him. He didn't want that attention, and certainly not the mass amounts that Steve got. That would be trouble.

He silently resumed his watch.

	That made sense, given what Darcy knew about their life long friendship. "Makes sense," she said. "He's a good guy." And he was hot, but she sensed that Bucky would not appreciate her making that observation. As brash and impulsive as she could be, Darcy wasn't stupid. "Means you must be a good guy too," she added. That was debatable, but Bucky also wasn't going to debate it. He knew what he did that turned him from good guy to bad guy, and to trying to be a good guy again. He owed a lot to Steve for never giving up on him, but at the same time, Bucky remembered everything he did on every mission. At least the mind control trigger wasn't there anymore, thanks to Shuri and T'Challa sheltering an ex-assassin on the lamb. But removing the trigger HYDRA put there didn't erase the memories. Those were there, for good, along with knowing every drop of blood he spilled. Every time they forced him into compliance.

In comparison, Steve's hands were squeaky clean.

"Yeah, thanks," he said, since that seemed the polite answer for someone who didn't converse too much.

	Well, as much as Darcy wanted to solve the puzzle that was Bucky, there was a party going on, so she decided to shelve that for another day.
