Who: Everyone
What: 4th of July/America's Ass' surprise birthday party
When: 4th of July DUH
Where: Governor's Island
Rating: Don't do anything Rogers wouldn't do! *shakes finger*

Disguised as a legit celebration/benefit for America's veterans, the surprise birthday party for Steve is kept as lowkey as possible...considering it's Captain America.

You know the drill!

"And that would've been a tragedy," Natasha smirked. Since there weren't any viable threats and James clearly wanted to be as unseen as possible, any forays toward the food tables might be a moot point for the foreseeable future since they were a constant bustle of people coming and going.

She took a sip of her own beer as she scanned the crowd in the opposite direction that James looked. "Mmhm. We're getting a lot more of these opportunities to simply blend in lately and it's...refreshing, if a bit unsettling."

That was true. He didn't dare get too close, since being recognized would have been a bad thing. Not exactly the sort of thing he wanted to start on Steve's birthday, where a wanted political assassin was found. He could imagine the clamoring from other countries that wanted to file extradition paperwork.

At least with Natasha there, he felt like they had one another's backs. They were both on the lookout and always on guard, because they knew better. If anything shady was happening, they'd be the first to notice it.

"Yeah, I don't really want to leave an opening." It took a lot to admit that to anyone else. He cast a quick glance over at her and went back to the watch. "It's only unsettling because you don't know how to relax all the way either."

Natasha had assumed that most of the trouble regarding Barnes as the Winter Soldier had been smoothed over in some shape or form in this new universe. The Sokovia Accords had been. Maybe she needed to do some more reading on Strange's network. It was poor lapse in intel if she'd missed something.

Sometimes she forgot how much James could read her. It had to be the similar backgrounds of Russian assassin brainwashing and lifetime of trauma. She took a sip from her beer. "Maybe I'm a bit more of a workaholic than I admit to being." And usually letting her guard down all the way led to trouble so she never took that chance.

It was one of the first things he looked into. The Accords had only been declared unconstitutional in the USA. The rest of the world still signed on board. And beyond that, he had a long reported track record of supposed assassinations. The grilling he'd get if he fell into their hands would be epic. He wanted to avoid that, if he could.

"Maybe," he teased, but only a little bit. It was more a knowing but amused glancing at her, than an overall expression or change in the tone of his voice. "Still gonna watch that supernatural show with me or what? We can pretend to relax then."

Was it a joke, or wasn't it? It was hard to tell.

"Name a time and a place and I'll be there." The phrase would normally be completed with 'bells on' but that would never happen for a spy of her caliber. It also felt like a line from the show itself, which gave Natasha a weird moment of dissonance.

Natasha was pleased at the continued signs of a personality under the super soldier that were showing through more and more. Maybe it was only visible to her because of their strange, shared traumatic pasts, but it was definitely there. "I should bug Steve about his list of things he needed to know to acclimate to the current century. I bet you'd get some use out of it too."

"That mean you're not going to track me down again?" he asked, with a faint note of teasing sarcasm in it. Bucky was just as well versed with cat and mouse games as Natasha was, even if he was joking about it.

There was definitely a lot of the shared traumatic past there, and that much was proven as it seemed like a brief glimpse of sun was covered up by another passing cloud again. That hint of good mirth was gone and he looked like he was mulling things over.

"Might be better to go to your place," Bucky said. Not that he didn't trust her, but the less people seeing where his new hiding spot was, the better. He might want to use it again later, if things got really bad. "Kinda think Steve probably needed that list more. At least I woke up to find out about the internet, just never got around to downloading songs from it."

Back in '97, one of the HYDRA medical assistants had a weird obsession with Celine Dion. If he ever heard My Heart Will Go On ever again, Bucky considered that it might trigger a flashback. Of him snapping the guy's arm nearly in two pieces after a particularly grueling pre-mission recalibration session.

At least he didn't have to listen to Celine Dion after that.

"Only if you make me," Natasha said with a shrug. She remembered that itch well where she'd wanted to make sure her hidey hole was safe from everyone, even the people she was slowly learning to trust. It's why she still had a million safehouses floating around. It wasn't that she didn't like her life, but it'd been proven to her again and again that always having a contingency was the smart play.

"Sure, that's fine. I just have to warn you that I'm still in the Warren so there's going to be lots of people in and out and of course it's equipped with Tony's AIs, his tech, and some of T'Challa's tech."

She'd wondered how much orientation to the different time periods he'd awoken in he'd received as part of his training. Pretty substantial from the sounds of it. Not the most ideal having an update on the world forced into your brain for the mission and then almost immediately wiped away again upon completion. "The internet's a complex thing with more than just songs. It's made the job more and less complicated."

It wasn't like he was on good terms with Howard's kid. They were in a 'don't ask, don't tell' sort of situation where they were both keeping a wide berth. But Bucky wasn't worried about Wakanda's King. T'Challa had been nothing but good to him. He was also making sure his goats were ok while he was gone.

"Guess it'll be interesting getting in and out," Bucky said with a slight, lopsided smile.

As for the orientation to different decades and places, it had been very thorough. For a long time, Bucky felt more like a robot (made worse by the metal arm) and less like a human being. Even if he hated being a puppet, it was all useful info later on. He know how to blend in if things went wrong so he could get in and out quickly. He knew not to call attention to himself. The internet was just one of those things where it was better to cover his tracks and not download or watch stuff on it for too long. He hadn't even turned on the Stark phone or laptop from the welcome kit, and was going with several burner phones and a stolen data-wiped laptop instead.

"Yeah, you're right about it being both," he told her. "A lotta people think they've got nothing to hide. They don't care if phone apps or social media accounts are tracking or listening to them. And then others plant a lot of false flag stuff. Never know if it's bait."

Bucky shrugged. It wasn't hard to find people on there now, but it could bite someone on the ass if it was used to lure someone into a trap.

"Text me," he said, in regards to coming over to catch up on pop culture stuff. "Fury's got the number of the week, unless I have to toss it."

"Mmm, I'm sure you'll have no trouble." If Natasha had to guess, she bet that he was looking forward to the challenge. They had to take their small moments of pleasure where they could grab it.

"It's definitely made recon ops far messier than they used to be back in the day." Granted, she could only imagine how different those ops had been for James compared to her own. She'd transitioned from the cusp of the internet age into its full blown, continually morphing adulthood and long been used to filtering through the bullshit.

She nodded. "Will do. He should have my personal number if you're wanting to get in touch with me before then."

"I'll ask him for it." He nodded back to her. "Just in case."

He could handle things on his own, but if he absolutely needed an extraction and didn't want to get Steve in the thick of it again (or in trouble), he could call Natasha.

"Guess I'll see you later then," he said, glancing over at her.

She nodded and glanced around. Time to move on and mingle some more and keep an eye on things. She also had some interference to run for Steve later.

Natasha gave him a two fingered salute with a smirk. "Don't be a stranger. And don't do anything I wouldn't do."

She gave him a wink then disappeared back into the crowd.

When she saluted, Bucky returned a half-assed salute of his own that would have gotten him yelled at for not being snappy enough during his army days. Then he watched her leave with the ghost of a smirk on his lips.

"...those redheads are like playing with fire," he mumbled an old warning to himself after he went out on that date with Delores. Dot was a redhead too, and he remembered his attempt to impress her by blowing all his money and screwing himself over trying to get home afterward.

Still, it would be nice to just hang around with Natasha and find out what binge watching was really about. Even he realized there was a lot of common ground there, and no expectations or pressure.

He focused back on his self-imposed surveillance routine.
