SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3
MICHAEL CORNER AND HESTIA JONES
"you're a plant, what do you know?"
the corridors | tbd - low?
Though Hestia was initially apprehensive about the uniform that was assigned to her upon her arrival of the kidnapping spaceship, the light fabric was flattering and easy to move in, two things that were important enough for any young Auror trainee exploring a strange place. She'd found out from her research that the Auror program was similar in some aspects to the new job she'd have on the ship, other than a complete lack of dark wizard and having to save her friends from people who thought their blood was mightier. Security on a big ship was something that she'd only seen on the telly with Dirk, but this was different. It was huge. It was overwhelming.

She wished her brothers were there to see it.

Hestia's hand hovered on her wand as she turned a corner, the sound of cordial conversations filling the corridors of the ship. It had been a few days since her arrival, and while Hestia faced anxiety when finally being left alone in her room she'd come to accept that the ship was the chance for a little holiday.

A little holiday full of delicious meals cooked by men who came from a time after her, and where people from home aged well past the time she'd arrived from. Hestia gave a lazy smile at one of the plants that sat in front of a doorway and sighed.

"You've probably never shown up on a random spaceship," she said. Hestia went to turn away, but a little voice called out behind her.

"You shouldn't make assumptions. There are lots of a places a person or thing could be from."

Hestia turned back to stare at the plant, her eyes wide. She bent over and inspected it, her hand reaching out for her wand. "Sorry, could you say that again?"

"It is, but don't worry, we've lost the plant. Or the plot, I'm not sure which one is more correct." She tried to give him a weak smile but ultimately dissolved into a fidgety shrug. "If I told you I've been sleeping like shit would you believe me? I'm sure you would, I can't be the first to experience it."

She gave him a brief nudge and nodded toward the nearest doorway - Partum Park. "Want to see if it's sunset?"

Concern flickered across Mike's face, even as she nudged him in the direction of the park. "I'm sorry to hear that, love." He wordlessly followed, but as soon as they were among the greenery, he asked, "Is this about your world? The not sleeping, I mean?" He wondered if anyone brewed potions on the ship. He'd have to ask.

"It's a bit of here and there," she admitted, glancing up at him as they walked.

The air in the park was perfect, and Hestia bet that they kept it that way for the comfort of the animals and visitors alike. As they walked down the path, a slight breeze blew in their direction and she turned her chin up, enjoying the sensation of warmth and fresh air.

"Things were bad, but you know that. You have the advantage of knowing how the first war ended, but I was there. Fighting it. Moody was my mentor and he had me working long hours, studying all sorts of laws and cases before taking me out at night to try and apprehend Death Eaters." She paused to look at him, frowning.

"After so many nights of worrying if the people you're searching for are searching for you, you start to sleep a little lighter. My hand was always on my wand, and I was constantly exhausted. I still am, even here in a place where those people don't exist. And the stillness of the ship while I'm in bed... It's unnerving. But I'm working on it. Please, don't worry."

He reached for her hand, allowing her to reject it if she wanted. If she was Su or Morag, he'd hug her, but he wasn't sure they were there yet. "I know those feelings," he admitted. "I was tortured once for trying to help a first year. Sometimes when I close my eyes, I still feel the pain." He shrugged. "I'm not sure those feelings ever go away, you know? If Ginny was here, I'd ask her. She is older, but a good mate from school."

He was also going to worry, whether he told her that or not. "We won't let anyone hurt you here," he promised.

Hestia took his hand and gave it a squeeze as she nodded in response. "I had to get used to the different curses in the Auror program. Using them and becoming hardened by them changed me. I might be nineteen but I feel so much older. Fighting with Alecto Carrow can do that to a person," she remarked, her thumb grazing the side of his hand.

"When we were growing up, she and I hated each other. We'd hex each other in corridors and under the worktables in classes. I had my suspicions about her and her brother, but we had bigger fish to fry. We knew they were hunting us, but I was lucky. Careful. I know we've lost some, I can tell by the way people talk to me that we weren't all lucky that first time around."

Hestia paused on the path and looked up at him, a regretful smile on her face. "I'm sorry that I'm not more joyous. This is a lovely day and you've taken such good care of me since I arrived. It'll just take me a bit to get away from it, you know? I promise, I'll stop whinging about it soon."

"You are not whinging," Mike insisted. "We've been through similar things, albeit during different time periods. I'll always listen, Hestia. No one else can really get it unless they've been through it, you know?" He saw the regret on her face and reached up to lightly touch her cheek. "But I think this ship can be a good thing, you know? A fresh start for so many of us."

He stepped back then. "Make sure your mates know whether you are ready to hear about the future," he added. "You are not daft, love, but if you don't want the details, no one would blame you."

"I am a bit," she whispered, but not enough to talk over him. She didn't like to think about him being tortured for doing the right thing, and the part of her that still wanted to rage against the purebloods and their toxic beliefs had her right back in London. It wasn't until he touched her cheek that Hestia snapped out of it, her eyes studying him as he stepped back.

"I want to know, but not yet. I don't know when, but I'll be ready when it feels right?" She gave him a hopeful smile before brushing off a strand of hair on his shirt. Her glum look changed to a brightened one and she tilted her head at him before speaking again. "I think that plant was right. This can be a good place. And you shouldn't be alone."

Mike nodded when she mentioned she'd feel ready. Only she could know that. "Well, I'll be here if you need an ear," he promised. He chuckled as she plucked a hair off his shirt and instinctively brushed his chest in case more were on him. "Maybe we should thank it on our way back," Mike said. "Intrusive or not, it has a point." He started walking again, if only because his pent up energy needed an outlet. "It is just me and Dad at home," he explained. "My mum moved to France when I was a kid. I see her some holidays but..." He trailed off. "You know. She has better things to do.'

"Nothing is better than her son," Hestia was quick to remind him, her fingers still playing with his hand. "France isn't that far away, not wh—"

She cut herself short and shook her head, realizing her error before she went too far down the rabbit hole. "I'm sorry that she did that. She's missing out on a wonderful person. Your dad would be proud of you, for what you've managed to do here. Taking care of strangers, cooking lovely food."

Hestia gave him a little nudge and nodded. "You're worth taking a trip for."

Mike was touched by Hestia's diatribe. He blamed himself for their divorce, even if he didn't tell many people that. He rubbed his thumb across the top of her hand. "Thanks, Hestia. It means a lot, you know." He glanced sideways at her. "What are your parents like?"

"They're... Kinda boring," she admitted, smiling down at the ground. "Clyde and Dottie, both went to Hogwarts, they fell in love and then had three kids. Dad works for the Ministry, he's an office head. He's over the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects." She looked up at Mike before flashing a grin. "That's a lot of words."

"And mum, she's alright. She doesn't work now, mostly stays at home and tries to take care of the house. She's got a garden and asks me to help but I'll be honest, I'm not the horticulturist. That's my brother. Actually, they're both good with plants. Do you have any siblings? Or pets?"

Mike smiled at her description. It sounded so perfectly normal and something he craved, but thought he'd never have. "Nope, just me and Dad," he answered while shaking his head. "I was worried about him when I arrived, but everyone says we are both here and at home so...I mean, that's good. I wouldn't want him to be alone. And I have Wisdom, my owl. She's not here though." Mike missed her, but he wasn't sure she'd like being trapped on a ship. "My best mates are Antony and Terry. We were all sorted into Ravenclaw at the same time so we're like brothers."

"I like that we're supposed to be in both places. I bet Wisdom is keeping you happy back home, with all that space to fly around." Hestia tapped on his hand with her pointer finger, thinking about his housemates. That was something she wasn't quite able to share his experience of. "I was always closer to people outside of my house. Marlene and Em, they were both Gryffindors. I also had Dirk, and Bones, but for the most part I just floated with whoever took me into their group. I ended up with a lot of friends," she said with a surprised laugh.

"I guess I hadn't really thought about all of it like that before, the whole building a family out of your friends. I like it, though. I'm glad you have that."

"I can see that about you, having a lot of mates," Mike said. "You are easy to be around, you know." He liked the feeling of their hands intertwined, but it made him nervous too. He was acutely aware he thought she was lovely and kind, which never ended well for either party. He always did something to muck it up.

"I think I just have a lot of 'em because nobody was going to tell me off," she corrected him, smirking. Her eyes did light up at his compliment, but Hestia was awful at accepting kind things about herself. Instead, she shook her head at him and sighed. "You've been very sweet to me since I got here. I don't really know why. Is this what you do for everyone?"

Mike laughed. "I don't think I'd want to piss you off," he agreed. However, then she was being direct and he felt uneasy. "I mean I try not to be an outright git," he hedged. "But you are the first real new friend I've made here." He didn't want to screw that up. "Look, I can be daft sometimes and I'll probably do something you don't like eventually and, well, I just hope it doesn't mess things up too much."

“Oh,” she breathed, pulling him over to a swing so that they could sit down. Hestia dug her feet into the ground and gave Mike a good stare before shaking her head and sighing.

“I don’t think I’m that easy to shake,” she admitted, with a quickly attached, “not am I scary when mad.” Hestia exhaled and pulled her legs up, crossing them in front of her on the swing. “And I think it’s nice, that you were nice. I’m not sure why you took to me, but I’m glad you did. I can be rather shy, or guarded - whichever. And sometimes it takes a while for me to get past that part of me that’s a bit immune to the kindness of other people.”

She turned to face him, her hand dropping from his so she could touch his shoulder, her fingertips barely pressing into the fabric of his shirt. “If you do something daft, I’ll say something daft. We’re both going to do stupid things, I bet. And hopefully we can still be friends after we do. It would be a shame if we gave up so easily, now wouldn’t it?”

Mike slightly swayed with the swing as he listened to Hestia. "I like to think I'm loyal," he admitted. "Maybe not Hufflepuff level, but enough, especially to the people I care about." He cleared his throat. "It's just I tend to...leave when things are hard. But sometimes things aren't hard! Like with Su or Morgan or my blokes. We've been mates for ages." He flashed a warm smile. "I hope we become those types of friends too."

"I'm sure we'll be plenty good friends," she told him, dropping her hand between the two of them. "And I don't put as much weight into Hufflepuffs being more loyal or Ravenclaws being more studious. I think we've got all of those values in us, the hat just put us somewhere cause one might have tipped a bit higher on the scale." She paused and then grinned, tilting her chin up at him. "So you want to be friends with me, like Morag and Su?"

"I agree there," he said. "The hat saw my ambition and thought I might do well in Slytherin." He snickered. "I can just imagine being in the dorm with Zabini and Malfoy. I would have gone mad."

His cheeks turned a bit pink. "Uh, yeah, something like that." He rushed on. "So what did the hat debate about you?"

Hestia's brows furrowed as she planted something like that in her head, a moment she could pour over when she was alone later. She liked the way that the tip of his nose remained pointy when he spoke, and Hestia shook herself back into the moment as a shiver trailed down her spine. "Gryffindor," she whispered, closing her eyes.

"I was so small, so frail. It told me that I was brave, but that I was loyal. It knew about all the times I'd never tattled on my brothers for picking on me. It also knew I kept flying even though I got sick every time," she laughed, shaking her head. "But it chose Hufflepuff. It said I was modest, and friendly. That I loved easily." She opened her eyes and leaned into him a bit, her side resting on him and the back of the swing.

"Imagine saying that to an eleven year old."
