SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3
MICHAEL CORNER AND HESTIA JONES
"you're a plant, what do you know?"
the corridors | tbd - low?
Though Hestia was initially apprehensive about the uniform that was assigned to her upon her arrival of the kidnapping spaceship, the light fabric was flattering and easy to move in, two things that were important enough for any young Auror trainee exploring a strange place. She'd found out from her research that the Auror program was similar in some aspects to the new job she'd have on the ship, other than a complete lack of dark wizard and having to save her friends from people who thought their blood was mightier. Security on a big ship was something that she'd only seen on the telly with Dirk, but this was different. It was huge. It was overwhelming.

She wished her brothers were there to see it.

Hestia's hand hovered on her wand as she turned a corner, the sound of cordial conversations filling the corridors of the ship. It had been a few days since her arrival, and while Hestia faced anxiety when finally being left alone in her room she'd come to accept that the ship was the chance for a little holiday.

A little holiday full of delicious meals cooked by men who came from a time after her, and where people from home aged well past the time she'd arrived from. Hestia gave a lazy smile at one of the plants that sat in front of a doorway and sighed.

"You've probably never shown up on a random spaceship," she said. Hestia went to turn away, but a little voice called out behind her.

"You shouldn't make assumptions. There are lots of a places a person or thing could be from."

Hestia turned back to stare at the plant, her eyes wide. She bent over and inspected it, her hand reaching out for her wand. "Sorry, could you say that again?"

Mike finished his shift at the Gerard and hurried back to his room to shower. He loved cooking, but didn't fancy the smells that clung to him after a few hours of it. He threw on some jeans and a t-shirt before using charms to make sure his hair was perfectly coiffed. Once that was done, he felt antsy so he decided to head out to the coffee shop. He was still worried about Ginny and the rest of the people from his world, even if the broadcast made it seem they were okay, so it was hard for him to sit still.

He spotted Hestia with her wand out so he immediately withdrew his own wand and looked around. "What's wrong? What is it?" Like he told Sirius, his history made sure he was always combat ready.

Hestia jumped when she heard Michael's voice and then laughed, her hand clutching her stomach as she fought her nerves. "It's talked to me," she explained, gesturing at the plant with a smile. "And I know that would sound like it's crazy to anyone that didn't go to Hogwarts, but it did. It talked to me."

With a step back, Hestia gestured at the small plant, her wand still extended. "It told me not to make assumptions," she whispered, her voice barely able to contain another nervous giggle. "And I know it's right, but it was the way it said it - like I should clearly know better." She glanced up at him and gestured at it again. "You want to try?"

Mike glanced at the plant. "Well, at least it is not squealing or trying to kill us," he said, referring to the plants in their own world.

Of course I'm not trying to kill you. I only want to help.

Mike couldn't help chuckling after he realized the plant really was talking to them. "My apologies," he told the plant with a slight bow. "I'm simply accustomed to things -and people- trying to kill me."

Sounds like a terrible world. Be glad you are here.

"I am trying to be," Mike replied. "I'm Mike. This is Hestia." He flashed Hestia a smile. "Things really do get weird around here."

Hestia shook her head but smiled at Michael when he looked at her, her cheeks going pink. "They do, yeah. Talking plants, giving advice. It's definitely weird."

After a moment of consideration, Hestia reached out and gave one of the plant's leaves a gentle stroke, her fingers barely grazing the surface of it. "That's about the best I could do for a handshake," she told it, doubling down with a respectful nod. "I hope that was okay."

Silence filled the air before the plant spoke again, its leaves still as a voice came from it.

Plants make roots and find a home where we start. You should do the same.

Hestia looked at Mike before taking another step back, her eyebrows raised. "I think this one might be domestic. What do you think?"

"Definitely," Mike agreed. The plant's words struck a chord in him. He was looking at the ship as a vacation, but maybe it could be a home. Mike felt a little guilty when he thought about his father, but if others were right and they were in both places...well, then, his dad wasn't alone. He gave the plant a little wave and gently tapped Hestia's arm. "Maybe we should leave it be." He didn't want to admit it, but the plant's advice was unnerving.

No one should go through life alone.

"Ah, yeah, I'll remember that," Mike replied.

Hestia glanced at Mike at the touch on her arm before looking back at the plant, her eyes narrowing. She didn't dare egg it on, lest it say something even more intrusive, but the Auror in her wanted to question it and find out what it wanted. With a reluctant sigh, Hestia put her hand on his shoulder for a brief moment before wandering in the opposite direction, perplexed.

"I can't believe it told you that you shouldn't be alone, like it's got any mind of it's own." She glared at the floor while adding, "it isn't wrong, but it was intrusive of it. Freaking plant."

Mike felt unnerved, but he didn't want to let on. He had a few close mates, but it was difficult for him to let people in. How did the plant know that? However, he couldn't help smiling at Hestia's indignation. "Yeah, damn plant," Mike agreed. "Are you alright? Even by Hogwarts standards, this ship is a bit much."

"It is, but don't worry, we've lost the plant. Or the plot, I'm not sure which one is more correct." She tried to give him a weak smile but ultimately dissolved into a fidgety shrug. "If I told you I've been sleeping like shit would you believe me? I'm sure you would, I can't be the first to experience it."

She gave him a brief nudge and nodded toward the nearest doorway - Partum Park. "Want to see if it's sunset?"

Concern flickered across Mike's face, even as she nudged him in the direction of the park. "I'm sorry to hear that, love." He wordlessly followed, but as soon as they were among the greenery, he asked, "Is this about your world? The not sleeping, I mean?" He wondered if anyone brewed potions on the ship. He'd have to ask.

"It's a bit of here and there," she admitted, glancing up at him as they walked.

The air in the park was perfect, and Hestia bet that they kept it that way for the comfort of the animals and visitors alike. As they walked down the path, a slight breeze blew in their direction and she turned her chin up, enjoying the sensation of warmth and fresh air.

"Things were bad, but you know that. You have the advantage of knowing how the first war ended, but I was there. Fighting it. Moody was my mentor and he had me working long hours, studying all sorts of laws and cases before taking me out at night to try and apprehend Death Eaters." She paused to look at him, frowning.

"After so many nights of worrying if the people you're searching for are searching for you, you start to sleep a little lighter. My hand was always on my wand, and I was constantly exhausted. I still am, even here in a place where those people don't exist. And the stillness of the ship while I'm in bed... It's unnerving. But I'm working on it. Please, don't worry."

He reached for her hand, allowing her to reject it if she wanted. If she was Su or Morag, he'd hug her, but he wasn't sure they were there yet. "I know those feelings," he admitted. "I was tortured once for trying to help a first year. Sometimes when I close my eyes, I still feel the pain." He shrugged. "I'm not sure those feelings ever go away, you know? If Ginny was here, I'd ask her. She is older, but a good mate from school."

He was also going to worry, whether he told her that or not. "We won't let anyone hurt you here," he promised.

Hestia took his hand and gave it a squeeze as she nodded in response. "I had to get used to the different curses in the Auror program. Using them and becoming hardened by them changed me. I might be nineteen but I feel so much older. Fighting with Alecto Carrow can do that to a person," she remarked, her thumb grazing the side of his hand.

"When we were growing up, she and I hated each other. We'd hex each other in corridors and under the worktables in classes. I had my suspicions about her and her brother, but we had bigger fish to fry. We knew they were hunting us, but I was lucky. Careful. I know we've lost some, I can tell by the way people talk to me that we weren't all lucky that first time around."

Hestia paused on the path and looked up at him, a regretful smile on her face. "I'm sorry that I'm not more joyous. This is a lovely day and you've taken such good care of me since I arrived. It'll just take me a bit to get away from it, you know? I promise, I'll stop whinging about it soon."

"You are not whinging," Mike insisted. "We've been through similar things, albeit during different time periods. I'll always listen, Hestia. No one else can really get it unless they've been through it, you know?" He saw the regret on her face and reached up to lightly touch her cheek. "But I think this ship can be a good thing, you know? A fresh start for so many of us."

He stepped back then. "Make sure your mates know whether you are ready to hear about the future," he added. "You are not daft, love, but if you don't want the details, no one would blame you."

Mike leaned in so she could more easily rest against him. "The hat is a bit creepy if you think on it. Sees into your bloody soul, that one." He gently elbowed her in the side. "It seems right in your case, but do you ever think about what would have happened if it sorted you into Gryffindor?"

Hestia took the invitation to lean again against him and wiggled as he elbowed her. With a contented sigh, she shrugged and smiled. "I think I would have ended up where I am, back home. Still an Auror, eventually, but maybe I would have played Quidditch. Maybe I'd have been more involved in dueling. Maybe a bit more egotistical, and I don't think I like that. What about you? What if it'd put you in Slytherin? Have you thought about it?

"Yeah, it sort of scares me," he confessed. "The Slytherins in my year weren't the kindest. Sometimes I wonder if they were all really awful or if they adapted to it, you know? Like survival of the fittest while stuck in that House? Ever read Lord of the Flies? Ravenclaw was like family. We didn't all like each other, but we respected each other, you know?" He sighed. "I hope I wouldn't be a right git if I was sorted there, but who knows?"

"They rarely are. Kind, that is."

She looked down at their bodies pressed together, a shy smile on her face. "I think you've got this impression of yourself that you're not great. You've alluded to messing up, or maybe that you think you might, but I think you're great. And I don't think you'd have to worry about a house changing you. Those houses, they don't mean much once we're all in our beds at night. We're just people. Slytherin, Ravenclaw. You would have turned out a right git if you were meant to be. At least, that's what I think."

"You are good for the ego, Hestia." He grew quiet for a few moments as he gazed out at the greenery. "This is something, isn't it? A park in space." He let out a small laugh. "I used to read fantasy novels, you know. Who knew they could come true?"

“I’m just being honest,” she insisted.

As she shifted so that her back was against the back of the swing, Hestia let herself appreciate his warmth along with the view from their perch. “Of all the books I read, nothing beat this. Our world is wild enough, but this? How… how could I want to go back? This is paradise.”

The closeness felt nice so he was in no rush to leave the park. "Definitely better than the Forbidden Forrest," he remarked. "Five stars out of five." He rubbed her shoulder gently. "I'm glad I ran into you and our talking plant friends."

Hestia’s head moved to his shoulder as he rubbed her, her eyes closing dozily. “I’m glad that it was those plants and not centaurs. Nothing against them, but I don’t think they’d have given you nearly as good advice.” She looked up at him and pressed her cheek into his shirt, thinking. “Suppose we should go ask it for more advice, or do you think we’re good as we are?”

"I am liking it here," he replied. It was quiet and, selfishly, he liked Hestia's company. "Unless you want to hear some more? Have you heard of the muggle Magic 8 Ball? You ask it questions and it gives you an answer. Maybe the plants will take inquiries like that."

“I’m glad. I don’t think it’d be nearly as good here if you weren’t here trying to take care of everyone.” By everyone, Hestia meant her, but she wasn’t nearly brave enough to make jokes like that. Instead, she crinkled her nose at the thought of a magic ball that told fortunes. “That’s a bit silly, innit? You just ask it for a fortune and it gives you one? I bet the plants would feel threatened. They might pick a fight. Which, you know, would be interesting.”

"That's an image!" Mike exclaimed. "And the ball is more...you ask a question, shake it, and then it gives, like, one of five possible responses." He waved his free hand. "If I ever get one, I'll show you." He glanced down at her resting against him. "Who needs a Divination professor with plants and balls around?"

“Oh, I think we’ve got to get one,” she laughed, her eyes on his free hand. “I never bought into fortunes or anything like that. I bet they’d all be wrong anyway. No one could have predicted this,” Hestia teased, her eyes raising so that she could look up at him. “I sincerely hope you’re not a secret astrology enthusiast. That would be such a shame.”
