hexennacht mods. [userpic]

If everyone knew 1984 was when everything was going to happen, why was no one prepared?
Hexennacht is an alternate universe MWPP game set in 1985; a world where Gellert Grindelwald is now the Minister of Magic for all of Europe, and Muggleborn wizards live in fear of the Black Caps, Grindelwald's personal army, charged with keeping the Muggles and wizards alike in line. Hexennacht begins with the latest decree restricting magic allowed by Muggleborn wizards to the simplest forms of magic, while the purebloods are allowed to get away with murder. With the Death Eaters on the run, Voldemort in Azkaban with no hope of getting out, and the Order in hiding, along with the remains of their single ally, a former terrorist organization, is there any hope of restoring Europe to a land of tolerance?

Bless your heart for waking up to all this.

I was going to suggest a "Nights/Knights of Walpurgis," too, or absolutely something with totalitarian overtones like "1984" or something Big Brothery and creepy "Grindwald is Watching You," with a bit of comforting/creepy benevolent cover art. "Grinwald for the Greater Good." And "Greater Good," was nice and succinct.

And, for silly buggers, something punkish. "Never Mind the Walpurgis," from the Sex Pistol song "Never Mind the Bollocks"

I wish you - sincerely - the best of luck in communicating with your fellow mods and players. It seems as if because people were so upset and not always polite, that keeping the name to be strong or not cave in to peer pressure became an entrenched response. Beyond all the "you're rather late in complaining," and "you're all sheep," "watch your tone," and "It's been 70 years, don't dwell!" I hope that they'll be able to hear that JKR implied Nazism, and implict allusion is very different than explict.

And explicit co-opting of such a tragic event for entertainment purposes can be a very, very hurtful thing. And poo-pooing legitimate hurt only compounds that.

Thank you for even bringing up the idea of changing the name, and opening a discussion of that. It's a graceful, hopeful gesture.

(By the way, I'm one of the throng who came over from LJ after reading comments about the game on my flist. I rarely participate in kerfluffles, but this one...I've visited oppressed societies (China, Haiti,) and talked to the persecuted and oppressed. Out of respect for them, I had to say something.)

Re: Bless your heart for waking up to all this.

I'm getting banner ideas from reading this, thanks. ;D

It seems to me like it was a case of the invulnerability of the internet taking over and some of our comments were more vicious than I feel they would have been had this happened in real life.

No matter what we decide on, I like the idea of using some of those suggestions and some 1984-esque imagery for our banners.

Re: Bless your heart for waking up to all this.

I do believe you've hit the nail right on the head, so to speak. The anonymous nature of the internet makes it so much easier. There's an intimacy to communication here, like there's no filter between brain and hand, unlike the social filters we were taught to use between our mouths and brains.

I personally have a policy of a one-hour cooling off period before responding angrily to a comment. And I was taught that the best way to calm down an angry customer is to speak softly and kindly. A version of the old flies/honey/vinegar trope that actually works.

Again, sincerest best wishes. And do, if you haven't, go have some breakfast or something if you just woke up. You shouldn't be dealing with this on an empty tummy!

Oooh, lastly, I think I got this image from the famous Apple "1984" ad; a "Big Brother" talking head, looking sort of distorted and greenish and angry on a TV screen. I also meant to look up more punk titles, but I sent the comment before I did. Anyway, I've given you more than my two cents. Cheers!
