hexennacht mods. [userpic]

If everyone knew 1984 was when everything was going to happen, why was no one prepared?
Hexennacht is an alternate universe MWPP game set in 1985; a world where Gellert Grindelwald is now the Minister of Magic for all of Europe, and Muggleborn wizards live in fear of the Black Caps, Grindelwald's personal army, charged with keeping the Muggles and wizards alike in line. Hexennacht begins with the latest decree restricting magic allowed by Muggleborn wizards to the simplest forms of magic, while the purebloods are allowed to get away with murder. With the Death Eaters on the run, Voldemort in Azkaban with no hope of getting out, and the Order in hiding, along with the remains of their single ally, a former terrorist organization, is there any hope of restoring Europe to a land of tolerance?

I understand that, I do, I'm not trying to be rude, again people did state "I'd seen it before."

Sometimes it's hard to speak up. Especially when you see no one else has. You think 'maybe I am being oversensitive' because we spend so much time having people tell us 'oh relax, it's just a joke, you're being oversensitive' or 'calm down, it's just fiction, you're being oversensitive' when we do speak up. And we worry maybe we are. Especially if no one else has said anything. Does that mean no one else has a problem, or are they all sitting there wondering the same thing? But then when we see someone else standing up, and we realize we aren't alone in how we feel, we think 'okay, chances are I'm not being oversensitive, it is my place to say something'.

That's not being a sheep. That's being a human being.

That I do understand, as well. I know human nature well, I understand even that things such as stockholm syndrome exist today. The world is a horrible, horrible place sometimes, and if everything reflected that it was kind and happy, then nothing would be realistic. Perhaps it was the wrong thing to say, but even though I understand the offended side, I also know that there are horrible things that happen everyday for no reason. This is a game and while the name does reflect a horrible historical event for a group of people, I feel that in some aspect that it helps it not to be forgotten. They are not killing off a group of Jewish people or mocking the Holocaust in any way, shape, or form, I know this for a fact and I feel for the victims of it and the families of and I understand a right to be offended, but this - this is a little ridiculous now. Not everyone speaks up, but maybe people should learn to voice their opinion as soon as they feel it rather than wait around and think, "eh, that bothers me." But then again, can't fix the human race.

I don't quite see how this is ridiculous. It's been a long held position in fandom that some things just shouldn't be appropriated directly for fan fiction or RPGs, the Holocaust being one of them. There are essays, discussions, posts, etc all on that subject. This isn't a new idea, nor is it unprecedented. Including in depth discussions on why things like this aren't helping in remembrance. Because it does trivialize it, whether or not that was the intention. And I don't believe that was intended at all. But intention doesn't matter in the finished product. All the good intentions in the world don't make a poor choice a better one. And it's the end product people are reacting to, not the intentions.

There have been games before that parallel the Holocaust, and they've been accepted. Because they preserve the parallels JKR set up, and keep the fantasy without appropriating real life events.

It can be very hard to recondition yourself to speak up if you've been taught all your life not to.

I don't understand though, because J.K. did model the death eaters after the Nazis that, this particular RPG is causing so much controversy when it does parallel like many others have. It's a name that brings memories, yes, but then again, it is just a name and it is not to the t modeled after that particular event.

As has been explained, I believe, while JKR did draw these parallels, she was very careful to keep those parallels in the realm of fantasy. She never once referenced actual real life events, dates, groups or anything else. She kept them as just parallels. Your game has gone beyond parallels by appropriating a real life event into a fantasy setting.

And now, if what you're saying is true, that the game isn't even completely modeled after that event, why is the name so important? If it's not necessary to the game, and a large number of people are upset and offended and you've all stated repeatedly you don't want them to be... why keep the name? Other than out of stubbornness and spite?

Do you see where I'm coming from?

I honestly can't speak for the name itself because the mods chose it before I was even in it, you know? I don't know what's going on there, but I can defend the parallels and that they have not been mirrored to actual events... even in a way I would consider as remotely close. I do understand your point and various others and I do thank you for approaching it maturely, but I can only speak from what I know as a player in the game.

That's fine, I totally understand that. And as I said in other comments, I don't think anyone could fault the game for going with parallels that exist in the game. It isn't the parallels people have a problem with, it's the fact that the name of the game takes it further than parallels and links it tangibly to real life horrors.

If there had been an IC event that had it's own name not linked to anything in RL but that paralleled the Night of Breaking Glass, and the game had used that as the name, I doubt anyone would have said anything.
