They'd grown up together, back when the worlds were still whole. Two boys of similar age and temperament, who understood and respected the other's need for silence. They shared many experiences, enemies, and training challenges. If there were times when neither of them could be found, and would refuse to say where they'd been when they came back... well, some things could only be shared and relieved by the one who knows you best.

When the Heartless tore them apart, they took revenge in the ways they thought best. But in the time before they met again Leon became a leader and Cloud became a loner, and there was no going back to the heady days of training and partnership, of camping out under the bright moon, safe in the notion that the one person who knew you best had your back.

Or was there?

Leon found him somewhere between the bailly and the crevasse, and to press his back to Cloud's was completely natural. “Think you can handle this many?” he asked, as casually as possible.

He could hear Cloud's smirk, didn't need to see it. “Well...” his friend drawled. “Might be tough if one more shows up.”

“Then that'll have to be the one I take care of.” A simple statement that meant more than just a battle against Heartless.

Cloud tried to sound surprised, trying to keep it as casual as possible. “What, you're fighting too?”

Matching fierce grins, matching war cries. They knew who had their back.
