Who: Marlene and Peter
What: Just living to spend time.
Where: Peter's flat, then ~elsewhere~
When: Tuesday, 19.6.1981 around seven pm.
Status: Closed | Incomplete
Rating: Should be SFW, possible swearing.

Marlene spent her day in the best possible way - doing absolutely nothing. She slept in much later than she would normally allow herself, and generally lazed around the house until it was time for her to get ready to meet Peter. Their plans were nebulous at best, so after tidying herself up she threw on a pair of shorts, pinned her hair back in a mess bun, and called it a day. She'd gotten ready faster than she'd anticipated, and found herself pacing in her living room, glancing over at the clock every fifteen seconds. After ten minutes of this, she scoffed aloud at the ridiculousness of her behaviour. It was still only fifteen past six, and Peter wouldn't even be off work until seven. There was no need for her to be worrying holes into her rug, time would pass at the same exact speed it always did. She forced herself to sit down and read, but after three minutes of rereading the same line over and over, she decided that she could wait just as easily at Peter's house. Maybe he'd get off early, and he had said to meet him there.

With that decision made, she grabbed her wand and vanished, reappearing in Diagon Alley seconds later. She made her way to Scrivenshaft's and then up the stairs to the place he called home, using the key he'd given her to let herself in. Now that she was in the small flat that he called home, the anxiousness she'd felt at her own home wore off. Waiting wasn't so terrible if she could do it in a place that smell like him, she thought as she nestled down on the sofa, flicking through her journal to pass the time.

Work had been less than enjoyable and by the time that seven rolled around, Peter was worked into a tizzy. He was so excited to see Marlene that work was unbearable - she was coming over and he was going to see her for the first time in ages (though it was really two weeks) and he was actually a little nervous about it. Marlene was perfection and he was definitely not that, at least not today - his shirt was smeared with plant remains and his clothes smelled distinctly like leather and gardenias.

He wanted to shower, it was awful.

By the time he got home, he realized that he was going to be late, if not more, for when Marlene arrived. He started to unbutton his shirt as he made his way up the stairs but felt that he wasn't going to be alone when he got there. Sure enough, when he opened the door he instantly felt her there. He closed his eyes and took a breath in, attempting to figure out if she was in his apartment.

"Mar," he called out cautiously, hand gripping his wand steadily, "Is that you?"

There was really only so much one could read about the lives of friends and acquaintances before it all started to run together into a giant heap of words and trite phrases. When five 'til rolled around, she was just about bored to tears, and the act of sitting still was beginning to wear on her. Marlene never had been spectacular at staying motionless for extended periods of time, and even though it'd only been a little over a half hour, she was already tapping her foot impatiently on the floor as she used her wand to look further back in the journal. Jiggers had better be paying him well, if he was going to be keeping him for as long as he was.

She snapped the journal closed and pushed herself off the sofa, standing and stretching her arms over her head before turning to wander over to his bookshelves. Maybe Peter had something good to read. Her hand was outstretched towards what looked like an interesting book when she heard his voice. "Yeah, I'm in here," she called back, her head snapping towards the sound and a smile appearing on her face. She walked back to the door, seeing him looking more than slightly ruffled from his long day. His shirt was littered with stains and partially open, and she almost felt guilty for barging into his place before he was able to freshen up. Almost.

"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you," she said, moving to stand closer to him. "You look like you've had a long day." She wondered if today really had been good for him to meet up with her. He looked beat, and she felt a sudden stab of worry that maybe he would have preferred to relax. "Are you sure you want to go out?"

For the slightest moment, Peter thinks of moving close to her, brushing her hair behind her ear and then squeezing her; just to show her that simple affection, that simple desire - would it cost him everything? Yes, probably...

And then he snapped out of it, his blue eyes studying her like an important guide. She was his map: her long nose, big teeth and curly hair was enough to make him weak in the knees but Peter knew better - he had to not tell her that he was tired, he had to suck it up and he had to not look at her mouth because fuck it all if he was going to give it away to her, not like that; she would just laugh at him.

If anyone had really done the math to find out how much Peter really thought about kissing Marlene McKinnon, they would waste a significant part of their day.

Instead, he shrugs an reached a hand out, gently brushing her arm. "Nah, I want to be with you. Whatever, Mar. I'm happy."

She narrowed her eyes at him and crossed her arms across her chest, trying her best to see if he was being truthful with her or not. Marlene was certain he was tired, it was written all over his face, in the way he held his shoulders, and even in the way he seems to drift off for a moment before speaking; that didn't mean he wasn't being honest when he said he'd rather be with her. It had been a long two weeks, give or take, since they'd last been able to actually see each other, and she knew that there was no place else she'd rather be than with him, so why should he feel any differently? "Okay," she said, her arms falling back loosely at her sides and her gaze losing its intensity.

"Why don't you go get ready and I'll make you some tea? It isn't like we're in any hurry to get some place." She stepped backwards, making room for him to enter into his own home. Even if he wouldn't admit to her that he was tired, he should be allowed the chance to go take a nice shower and wash the day off himself. "Then we can talk and decide what it is we should do with ourselves tonight."

Even if Peter wanted to argue with Marlene, he was in no state to do so. Her look matched with the offer of tea made him think that maybe he should just go along with what she was recommending and really, a shower did sound incredibly soothing. He wanted to just curl up with her and call it a night but he did promise her otherwise - they would be going out and that was that.

With the slightest shrug, Peter gave her a grin and nodded his head, closing his eyes with a bit of thought. "Yeah, Mar, that sounds right." He gave a smile and excused himself from the room with a little bow. A shower was definitely in order and he had to take one before he got plant bits all over the floor.

-----
The shower was refreshing and he did appreciate the fact that Marlene gave him that chance to get to be alone for a few minutes. The shower was quick and he felt so much better afterward; if only he had more hours in his day to get on with what he wanted to do, the short showers would never be an issue again.

As he voyaged into the living room, Peter was quick to brush his hands through his hair and shake out the rest of the water left in it. "Better," he said softly, walking over to his blonde friend. With consideration and very careful hand placement, Peter wrapped his arms around her and sighed. "You're aces, my lady. Absolutely aces."

Luckily Marlene was well enough acquainted with Peter's kitchen to know where the things she needed for tea were located. She felt very domestic as she placed the kettle on to boil and got out two mugs, humming softly to herself all the while. It was a comforting sort of feeling, like nothing bad could happen to them while she was there with him. He didn't even need to be in the same room, just knowing that they were together under one roof was enough. His kitchen was tidy enough that she didn't feel the need to go about cleaning up after him, so once the kettle was steaming and the tea was brewing, she walked back into the living room and sat down, placing a quick warming charm on both mugs.

She didn't have much longer to wait until he appeared, freshly showered and slightly damp. Standing up, she met him half-way and gave him the hug she'd wanted to earlier, but had stopped herself from giving because of his plant encrusted outfit. His familiar smell washed over her and she smiled into the crook of his shoulder before pulling back and grabbing onto his hand and pulling him over to the couch. "Here," she said, releasing her hold on him and handing him the mug. "Careful, it's hot," she added, taking a cautious sip from her own mug.

He looked much better after his shower, but she was still certain that he was more tired than he was letting on. There wasn't any real need for them to go out. All Marlene wanted to do was spend time with him, and she was just as capable of doing that at his place as she was elsewhere. "Petey, why don't we just order delivery and stay in tonight?" She asked, turning to face him as she did. "I don't really want to brave the dinner rush, to be honest." It was more than partially the truth, and she placed her free hand on his arm as she spoke.

Her face in his shoulder was so wonderful that it should have been criminal- Marlene smelled like an intoxicating mix of flowers, tea and girl (three things that he would never get used to). She pulled away and Peter took the tea with a steady hand. She was a goddess and always knew how to make the best cuppa. "Thanks, Mar," he rushed with thanks, both hands wrapping around the mug.

When she suggested they really stay in, Peter considered it for a few long, paused moments and sighs included. "If you want to stay, we can stay." She was touching him again - criminal activity. If he could slip his hand down to hers, the two could watch each other for a while. He was thinking about getting a fish tank or something to watch when he sat but really, now he had Mar. She was better than a fish tank, she actually breathed.

He thought about food and looked at her expectantly, raising his eyebrows suggestively. "You want to order, right Mar? You wouldn't make me, right?"

She nodded once at his acquiescence to her request, and grinned over at him, removing her hand from his arm and back to cup her tea. It was good to have that settled in a way that let everyone win. She got to stay with him, and he got to relax at home. "Good. We'll stay." Marlene moved closer to him and nudged his shoulder with her own, adding, "Thanks, Peter. Sorry for changing the plans so suddenly on you," and then dropping the subject. The best way to handle him was to make him believe the things she did for him were really things he was doing for her. She'd learned over the years that there was really very few things he wouldn't do, if she wanted to to them.

"No, no. I'll do it," she said, placing her mug down on the small table in front of them, and rolling her eyes at his avoidance tactics. "What do you think? Fancy a curry?" She reached for yesterday's Prophet that was resting on top of the arm rest and flicked to the food section. "Brahma's Throne has a two for one deal going on right now," she added, leaning towards him to show him the ad.

This woman was after his own heart, he knew it - just the way that she was so easily happy to order the food to the way that her body looked when it was so close to his. Damn her, evil temptress- didn't she know how hard it was to function without her looking her looking all cute on his couch.

With a little pout, Peter looked up at her and shrugged, having a sip of tea before he spoke. "I don't mind as long as you're the one changing them. Also, curry is great," but frankly, anything was good, he just wanted to eat.

As he watched her flip through the Prophet, Pete closed his eyes and let out a soft yawn, his free had running through his hair. "Hey, Mar - How come we never take naps? Naps are astounding. I think we'd be good at them."

"Curry it is, then," she said, tapping twice on the advert with her wand to place their order. With that done, Marlene was able to shift her attention back towards the man beside her. His eyes were closed and she could tell just how tired he really was. Poor man had spent all day working and now she was intruding on his private time, he probably just wanted to have an early night and not have to worry about entertaining her. But he did need to eat, it wouldn't do for him to skip dinner. She decided that she'd stay until after they'd eaten then make her excuses and allow him the rest of the night to himself.

It was a good thing that he had his eyes closed, because she watched him fondly for a touch longer than perfectly appropriate for their platonic status. At his question her mind provided her with the image of them together, her head resting on his shoulder, hands and legs intertwined as they rested together. Her mouth was suddenly dry and her throat worked in vain as she swallowed once, twice. "I do take naps," she said once she trusted herself to speak. "When I can. Do you not?" Then it was time to change the conversation before to moved into dangerous waters.

"So, how did everything go back at Hogwarts? Did things go according to plan?"

Where her mind went, his went as well and while he was there, his hands were tucked around her and he held her, the two of them taking a nap in the middle of a Sunday afternoon, maybe with a warm, soft blanket and a few pillows; he could mindlessly tangle her hair while she slept... They were dangerous thoughts and he was worried that she'd notice him smiling as he thought, so Peter pushed his grin down and opened his eyes after she asked him if he napped.

"Of course," he retorted, wanting to further argue that everyone naps. The two stared at each other for a moment and then she asked about Hogwarts. With an incredibly drawn out sigh, Peter raised his hand into the air and shrugged, his eyes closed again. "We went, we saw, I rode on Remus's shoulder. Nothing, though. Not anything of note."

He looked down at her and shrugged again, not a bit of shame on his face. They looked and found nothing - it was frustrating but really, what were they going to do? If Dumbledore was disappointed, well, they'd look out for that later.

When they locked eyes, and she was almost certain that he would be able to read the thoughts in her mind, she felt the familiar urge to reach out and touch him; once again she reminded herself that this was something she couldn't rush into. The idea of anything being rushed at this point, well into ten years of knowing each other and a good three years since she'd admitted her feelings to herself, almost made her laugh. But instead of finally giving in, she tucked her hands under her thighs and looked down at her shoes. "So, you didn't find whatever it was that Dumbledore sent you after?" It wasn't a question that needed asking, obviously he hadn't, it was a question asked to fill a space that was ever present between them.

They lived in the moment before the jump.

"I'm not shocked," she continued, "I don't understand why he thought you'd be able to find something in the castle in such a short amount of time. The place is huge." He didn't seem upset about it, which she was glad to see. "At least you got to spend some time with the boys?" He worked too hard, he probably needed to see his best friends. Things were so much more complicated now than she'd ever imagined things could be back when they were in school. Being an adult was completely overrated. "How is everyone doing?"
