Sorry About that

Your ever so wise an all knowing sysadmin (insert sarcasm) goofed up. I forgot about the database logs getting really really big and filling up the log filesystem, and didn't move them somewhere bigger. So basically the database for the site locked up this evening and caused a couple of the tables to crash. I had to do some database repair work, but I got everything back up and running.

Yes this is the same thing that happened last time we moved servers (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/36438.html) , in the haste of it all I forgot about this, I'm sorry about it.

But take solace in knowing that it is fixed and the site shouldn't be going back down again any time soon.
  • But take solace in knowing that it is fixed and the site shouldn't be going back down again any time soon.

From a DBA to another... never cry wolf :)
  • Just don't let it happen again. ;]
  • I think I can speak for the vast majority of us when I say you're forgiven. You do so much for us that we're hardly going to complain about technical difficulties once in awhile. It happens, especially when you're probably still dealing with the huge influx of refugees.
  • S'good to see the site back up again, I was worried there for a while.

And hey, mistakes and forgetting happens to everyone :)
  • Good one! ;D Just kidding, glad to know it wasn't anything serious like... the sky falling or something.
  • I just have to comment and say that I am one of the many who have moved over from GJ and you do an amazing job. To see this the second the site is up and running again, I mean we'd go days without knowing anything of what happened on GJ and even when they'd say something, they would never answer the "What happened" question. All we want are answers, honest ones at that, shit happens, and I just want to say thank you so much for giving us those answers without even having to ask. I love knowing that I can read the news on the homepage and know exactly what happened. You keep us well informed and it's greatly appreciated.
  • Thanks for fixing everything so quicly!! And communicating about it so openly too. :) Rock on. Glad things are back up and running. Hooray.
  • I loved that you posted 'as it happens' type news blurbs to Twitter! It's very reassuring:) Thank you!
  • Thank you!!!! So what did you ultimately decide to name the new server?
  • Thanks so much for keeping us informed -- sure, it sucks that it was down, but stuff happens, and the fact that you kept us updated on Twitter and then had an explanation for us right away keeps me from being panicked ... instead of flipping out and throwing something across the room, my reaction is "[info]squeaky will take care of it soon, no problem." Even before I know what's going on, I know you'll be working to take care of it, and that makes up for any inconvenience.
  • Ah, I'd wondered if it was my computer or the site. Relieved that it wasn't my system.

I have another question (I'm full of them lately, it seems). Is there a way to actually view the icon that I'm using to post a comment? I click on "browse" beside the drop-down box for the icons, and there is a white screen that opens at the top of my screen with the word "loading" in it .... but I wait and wait, and nothing ever loads. So I'm a little mystified.
  • Don't tell me you're human! I might die from the shock of it all!

    heh

No problem, squeaky. Happy holidays to y'all.
  • Of course, now that you've forgot about it twice, it should be one of them things that you just never ever ever forget about again... kinda like I *always* remember to save my bookmarks when reformatting my HD - honest I do (well, I do now, after forgetting for about the first four million times ;))!
  • Being a new LJ refugee myself, I greatly appreciate all you're doing for us, and how forthright you are about these things.
  • No need to apologize! Even though you are definitely the most awesome of admins ever, even you are still *gasp* human! ;)
  • Oooopsie.

    We still love you, [info]squeaky!
  • Considering GJ's unreliable service, I've gotten used to random times of sites being down, but I knew the problem was most likely getting worked on. Thank you for doing so quickly.
  • no worries squeaky. you still totally rule :D i love ij and my 5000 icons.

  • I honestly was so busy doing holiday baking, I never noticed.}:)
  • Thanks for the info! The Twitter thingy really helps. Hope the "dust" is settled so you can have a great holiday season!
  • It's all good :)
  • ...

*gets out a Post-It(tm) pad, scribbles "check database logs during server move" on it, sticks it somewhere conspicuous*

    :D

Good to know that someone as amazingly on the ball as you often are is human too. ^_~
  • Thank you for your communication with us. I didn't even know the site had been down, until I read this, since I wasn't trying to access it during the outage. But it's so nice to know that you're ready to tackle any of these issues, and as soon as you know and can share, we'll hear about it. It's wonderful not to have to wonder. :)
  • I think it crashed about halfway through a post I was writing... >.< I noticed on the twitter site, right at the beginning when twitter still said the site was running, there isn't anywhere to click to let you know if there's a problem. There's a link to an insanejournal asylum but of course with the site down, that link was inaccessible. Anyway. I wasn't worried at all: I knew the Great Squeaky would be fixing it soon. :)
