Christmas is a hard one, but the day after poses difficulties too. In 1914, I was ordered to break a truce, and to force my men to kill men they had only just come to see the humanity in. I had no choices otherwise; it is a soldier’s lot to get on with what needs doing, and an officer’s to rise above his men, and to be the example that they need, and I bear no real cosmic guilt for it, but the memory of being seventeen and hating myself while my boys just grimly nodded, boys I once promised myself I would protect remains the same.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick advancing unnecessary wars, especially at the behest of those with too much cowardice to put on the uniform and fight themselves. Perhaps we shouldn’t send out children who are as likely to play football as they are to shoot and shell each other. When the cause is righteous, Henry at Agincourt, something like that, it changes, but are most actions of the war machine? I hardly think so, I fear.
