Remus still felt out of place around home, most especially around Vera. He was walking on eggshells around her, terrified of setting her off and no longer sure of himself. Still, he thought this dinner might be good on her morale-- meeting a new Outsider. It signified a higher level of trust. It was a level of trust that Remus didn't feel any longer, but he told himself he was being paranoid. It brought to mind the tragedy that his mistrust and paranoia had caused when Voldemort had first appeared. No, he was determined to be more generous with his trust this time. It was, he was finding, more difficult than it sounded.
Remus was secretly looking to Sirius to make this evening go well. As Remus carefully placed food on plates and placed warming charms on them-- hoping the food was palatable because he couldn't cook for shite-- he pondered whether he was relying too much on Sirius recently. Some days, days like today, Remus felt like disappearing, perhaps moving back overseas. He was failing with Vera, had yet to find Gilbert, and was putting stress on Sirius.
Remus ducked his head to glimpse a peek of the rising waxing gibbous moon out of the eastward-facing window and sighed. He was taking his wolfsbane already. He shook his head, hoping to clear it, though no such luck.
