Remus blinked at Severus, then he really looked at Severus, at the plush midnight blue velvet that made his hair look like a starless night sky and his pale skin pearlescent. His fingers twitched, his blood began to move more quickly through his veins, and his cock ceased sitting behind his placket like a lump of lead.
“The Baron and his host herded me back here like a lost lamb, Severus.” Remus crossed his arms—not to protect his tender sensibilities but to keep his hands from roaming all over the velvet lovingly draped across Severus’ shoulders and chest—and glared at Snape. “I wanted to be alone,” he ground out.
Severus bit his lip and then reached out and drew Remus’ arms down, pulling him toward the sofa that Draco had high-jacked earlier. He pushed Remus down to the cushions and then strode over to the mantle and wound a music box. The song was soft and old, the box a gift from his mother’s grandmother, smuggled out of the Prince house when Severus was born.
His back still to Remus, Severus began speaking. “You are a strong man who’s overcome a great deal, Lupin. If my opinion means anything to you, I say that you handled the situation with Auror Tonks to the best of your ability.” He turned around and came to sit at Remus’ side. “Molly Weasley is a force of nature. If she had a hand in things, it’s a wonder you’re free now.” Severus caught up one of Remus’ hands, his thumb sweeping over the scars on the back of it.
“You don’t think less of me?” Remus asked in a low voice. There was a slight whine in the words and Severus tugged him closer.
“Lupin, I got over you attempting to eat me! For Merlin’s sake, man, you’ve had me hot and bothered all day!” Severus slapped Remus’ hand over his lap. “If I thought any less of you, I’d be a sated mess,” Severus growled.
Remus flexed his fingers over the throbbing under his hand. He was rewarded by Severus’ legs opening slightly, the velvet robe a pleasant counterpoint under his fingertips. “So I take it…”
“You take too long.” Severus reached up and pulled Remus into a heated kiss. The music box played on, their sighs matching the tune every few minutes.
As they drew apart, the better to lie down on the wide sofa, Severus traced his fingertips over Remus’ cheeks and nose. “You were in mourning, Lupin. There was a war going on and plans-within-plans unfolding.” He kissed Remus’ chin and then snuggled the man across his chest. “I’m just glad you decided I was worth the effort of forgiving.”
Remus straddled Severus’ thigh and began a slow grind as the music box wound down, his hip rolls on each upbeat. He pressed his lips to Severus’ throat. “Seems we both come out ahead…together.” He kissed the throbbing vein. “Do we still have time to…work on my self-esteem?”
Severus laughed, the rumble vibrating through Remus’ chest and farther south. “Yes, Lupin…Remus…we have time for me to build you up…” Severus’ voice faded away. The music box gave a last plink and the only sounds were of a crackling fire and pleasure.
