Gilderoy could hear them from all the way across the room, down the corridor, and up the stairs, through the door of the study. He idly twisted and twirled a candy can in his hand as he considered the row Draco was having with his mother.
He was half Veela. Half-creature. When the healers first explained this to him, he took it in stride. All of those things they explained about how he might have a difficult time blending in with society, how he'd stand out and gather all kinds of attention - that seemed pretty good to him at the time. But then the healer explained that many of the pure-blooded families did not approve of a blending of man and creature.
Of course, at the time, that didn't matter to Gilderoy. What mattered most was that he could smile in a certain way and the mediwitch would bring him two desserts instead of just one and sneak him naughty magazines on Saturdays.
Now, however, things were different. He thought about what this might mean. What would happen if somehow she convinced her son that he could not be with someone like Gilderoy. True, Draco had made his vows. He'd promised things under the magical binding of these rings, and he'd have to obey until the very end. His mother, on the other hand, was not under that kind of influence.
A cold fear crept up through his heart into his head as he came to that realization.
Swallowing hard, Gilderoy decided he would have to do something about it. Shrugging out of his jacket, he lay it over the back of the chair and headed down the stairs, and down the hall.
"You've destroyed everything!" Narcissa howled. "Binding yourself to that creature. Do you have any idea what that does to the House of Malfoy? The House of Black?"
"Mother... please."
"How long before you promise him you'll never have anyone else? How long before you cut off any chance of these bloodlines surviving?"
"MOTHER! PLEASE! I know that's important, too, but I just can't..."
Both of them stopped shouting and turned when Gilderoy broke through the wards in the room. For the first time since any of them had seen him, he appeared as a Veela. His golden hair was practically glistening as if it were lit up by a million tiny candles, his deep blue eyes looked like fine crystal, polished until they shone, twinkling in his own eminating light.
They were stunned and unable to do anything, say anything, even think anything as he approached them.
Carefully removing his waistcoat, then ascot, and finally his shirt, Gilderoy lay them over the back of the sofa. Taking a deep breath, Gilderoy finally did what he'd been too afraid to attempt these past eight years since he found out what he was - he unfolded his wings.
It was painful - Gods but it was painful. The healers had warned him about that, and to be perfectly honest, that's what he feared most about opening them. As the layers of skin ripped open on his back, blood trickled down, but it looked almost like honey under the glow of the giant gossamer wings that extended out, nearly taking up the entire room.
The wings were each almost 15 feet long, fully extended. Draco was awestruck at the beauty of them. Similar to a gull wings in shape, but bearing more similarities to a dragonfly or cricket's wings in appearance, they glistened and shimmered in their own light.
Narcissa just stared for a moment and then, as if in a trance, her face softened. Gilderoy smiled at her. She looked almost like a child.
No words could be said. Narcissa smiled and sighed. Draco took a few steps forward and slowly reached out to touch Gilderoy's bare shoulder. Then, as soon as they made contact, Gilderoy pulled Draco in, wrapped his arms and his wings around the two of them, and held him there in a protective coccoon.
There would be no denying him his mate. They had bonded. No force on the planet would tear them apart now. This was the power of the Veela. This was what the manipulation was for. This was how he would use the seductive power. It was the same protection that Lily Evans gave her son.
As the glow dissipated, and Gilderoy finally pulled back his wings (still hoding onto Draco with both arms), Narcissa knew she was defeated. She took a step back and leaned against the side-table. After a moment, she chuckled. "Well, at least there's one concession. Even with a son with a peculiar attraction toward men, I shan't go without a grandchild."
Draco turned and shot his mother a confused look.
"Full Veelas - and apparently half-veelas, as well - can adapt to fit with the gender of their chosen mate. Did they not teach you anything in your Care of Magical Creatures classes at that school?"
