He had been a clever boy at fifteen; there was no denying that. Now, with a thirty-nine year old's knowledge under his belt, however, the trick would be not to act too clever. Easier said than done, granted. Even Merribell Gaunt, as dim as she seemed to be, had picked up on it straightaway. Granted, his mother had always sworn he had been born forty, as he had told her, because he had always been so dreadfully serious about everything.
But now, ironically enough, he seemed to be a bit more relaxed, overall. Probably because he knew most of the Potions and Defense coursework backwards and forwards and could write the essays in his sleep. His Astronomy was a little rusty, no doubt, but that would come back to him. Arithmancy had been a cakewalk the first time through, as had Charms, but Transfiguration would be the sticking point. He had always had trouble with the subject but never gave it much thought in his former life.
This time around, however, he wanted to qualify for Auror training, and good marks in Transfiguration were unfortunately requisite. If he poured an exceptional effort into the subject, and got as much help as he could from anyone who would give it, he might just bring this off, too. Or so he hoped.
He looked up at the girl presently approaching the table where he sat, and his mouth opened in a gasp. He didn't remember Amelia Bones being so ... pretty. Though the last time he had seen her, of course, had been at his trial before the Wizengamot, when she surveyed him through that monocle she wore with a disdainful expression, even after Dumbledore vouched for him. She certainly hadn't been smiling.
