RP: Climbing the romance ladder?
Who: Demo & Cass
What: Date time
When: Sat afternoon 22nd Jan
Where: Mile End Climbing Centre
Warnings: TBC
Completion Status: Ongoing

After their texts the other week Demo had had fun looking up climbing centres in and around London, before booking the two of them onto a taster session where they could try things out. It was with a small group, but that was okay by him. He’d let Cassandra know and now he was waiting for her to join him at the end of the road from the centre. They had decided to meet there because it was a muggle place and he wasn’t confident enough to side-along them to somewhere nearby. In fact he’d actually decided to indulge one of his random moments of trying to enjoy the Tube. But he’d forgotten how much busier it would be at the weekend because of all the kids and tourists. Still, it had got him to the meeting spot, complete with his warm workout gear and a coat that looked rather more elegant.

When he finally saw Cass approaching he smiled, the little flutter of excited anticipation in his belly growing and being soothed all at once. “Hey, I’m glad you found it okay. I felt bad about not picking you up, but you’re probably glad you didn’t come on the Tube with me, it was packed,” he said, leaning in to kiss her cheek.

—-

Cassandra has dressed comfortably in a matching set of yoga pants and sports bra that made her skin look almost luminescent. She spotted him standing at the counter and a smile grew across her face. Between their blind date and the sporadic texting Cassandra felt she had found someone special.

“Oh please.” She gave him playful nudge, “We were coming from different directions. It made sense to meet here.” She liked that he cared enough to apologize, even if it wasn’t necessary. She turned around looking at the polygonal structures of the bouldering areas covered in a mosaic of colored holds. “This was a great idea.” She said signing in and filling out the proper liability forms.

—-

He filled in his own forms easily enough, tuning back in time to goggle slightly when she took her coat off. He swallowed and looked away. Her dress on their first date had been plenty sleek enough, and she’d been fairly casual when he rescued her from the potions hiccup, but this felt a little more intimate somehow. Despite it being rather more public. He also felt rather scruffy by comparison, since his own workout gear was mostly geared for comfort and his light blue top was the only bit of interest under his dark grey jacket and jogging bottoms. “Have you got a coverup in case it gets cold?” he asked. He was sure he’d let her know that the centre had warned him it got chilly. “If not, you can always borrow mine.”

He looked over at the climbers too and watched one do an impressive spring from one set of holds to another. “Okay, I am not going to be that good,” he said, indicating the person with a hand as he came alongside her.

“Do you want to share a locker?” he asked. There didn’t seem to be changing rooms as such so they could split their stuff post-climb if they wanted to change in the toilets. “I’ve got a change of clothes and stuff.”

—-

“Got it covered.” Cassandra pulled a hoodie out of her bag. “I figured once we were up there it might be chillier.”

“Oh, sure.” He looked uncomfortable, she thought as she handed him her pack. Looking around the gym she saw plenty of other women wearing something similar to her. Maybe a couple with a t-shirt over top. She thought she had picked something that was rather innocuous.

“Nice and warm.” She pulled the hoodie over her head and scrunched her shoulders to her ears.
—-

He grabbed her bag and wandered over to the bank of lockers, deftly slipping in both of their bags and inserted the required muggle coin. He brought the key back to her and held it up. “You have a zip pocket for this to go in, or do you want to use mine?” he asked. He figured a zip pocket was probably necessary and had one, but if she’d feel more comfortable keeping the key he was more than happy for that to happen.

“How’s work going?” he asked. “You know, the bits you can tell me about. Still super busy?” he asked as he rejoined her. They were standing loosely close to what he assumed were probably muggles who were also waiting for the session to start.

He looked down at his still trainer-clad feet and groaned. “Umm, I think we need to change shoes. Hang on.” He looked around and spotted the right spot on the welcome desk. It would be a quick enough process, he was sure.

—
“Probably better in yours.” Her hands bundled in the front pocket of her hoodie. Her outfit served a purpose, just not a practical one. She stopped and thought. They were in a muggle business. How was she supposed to talk about Potions work?

“It’s still busy.” She shrugged. “I’ve got two or three projects that I'm constantly working on but at least we have a research team in case anything comes up.” It was a bit annoying they were both versed in potion making and she wished they could talk freely but at least this way the most the bystander knew she worked for some think tank.

When he walked back to the counter she looked at her own feet. Were her trainers not the right attire to wear? Climbing seemed a bit more involved than she thought. He returned with two pairs of shoes that looked like they could almost pass for a ballerina's shoes, except for the laces and rubber soles. The shoes curved a bit coming to a gradual point where her big toe would sit. Definitely more involved than she thought. She slipped off her shoes and handed them to him. He did have the key, after all.

—

He tried not to laugh as she clearly had to think around the topic of her work, although he suspected his smile wasn’t all that well suppressed. “Isn’t it always the way! Hopefully you can still have some time to have fun too. Your own interests, or just throwing yourself up random walls in old warehouses,” he teased.

It was an easy enough operation to drop their regular shoes into the locker too after they’d both switched. They felt slightly unusual but perfectly comfortable. “I only knew because of the website when I booked,” he reassured her. “I guess they grip better, which is probably pretty important.”

Just then their instructor arrived and the next few minutes were taken up by listening to a quick review of some safety and basic climbing tips. Everyone got paired up and split around the bouldering wall to have a go and start spotting each other. Apparently the blue courses were the easiest, followed by red, black and pink. There was also a rating system, but the colour coding was the easiest thing to keep track of for a newbie apparently. However he didn’t have to concentrate on his own climbing to start with, since he was spotting for Cassandra. He was just tracking behind her to try and break any fall a little more than the crash mats would. Or possibly prop her up if he needed to apparently. And try not to give into the temptation to just grab her arse.

—
It was a lot harder than she thought. She considered herself to be fit but there seemed to be a difference in being able to carry oneself and pull oneself up a wall. She settled into what she assumed was a starting position. It was an odd sense of tunnel vision that she craned her neck to remind herself where she was going. “Okay.” She took a deep breath and pulled herself up. A momentary weightlessness and she was on the wall. “Well I’m on!”
She slowly followed her taped path up and up until it ended at the top of the wall. “Now what?” She called down to Demo. She made it to the top but she felt like a kid climbing her first tree. Excited to be at the top but not experienced enough to find a way back down.

—

Watching Cass climb was an exercise in not being a jerk for about maybe thirty seconds, because she really did look good in her kit and he didn’t quite know where to put his eyes. He definitely hadn’t caught on to his Papa’s sense of artistic detachment from someone he was observing. Although he was fairly sure even Papa didn’t manage that when his husband was involved.

After the first couple of steps she made he was far more focussed on making sure he had her covered just in case of falls. Part of him definitely wished he’d kept his wand on him for safety purposes, but with him it probably wouldn’t be the most help. He hovered with his hands out and occasionally made guesswork suggestions about how to proceed. He clapped when she got to the top. “Well done,” he called up. “Umm, I guess either climb back down or climb a bit and jump?” he guessed. “I’ll try and catch you.” He was and sounded deeply unsure, but still moved closer to the wall with his arms up to try and brace her if needed. He wasn’t even sure if it was possible to reverse the climb, but that seemed most logical to him in his moment of panic and lack of surety.

—-

“Okay.” Cass checked her footing before letting go of the top of the wall. Starting to shimmy down the wall she realized it was almost harder than getting up when her foot slipped on a hold. Feeling her weight coming away from the wall she jumped towards the crash pad underneath her.

She was breathing heavily, “Well that was a rush.” She reached out a hand to Demo. “So it's your turn?”
—-

“Well done!” he said, genuinely impressed by her skills as he held out a hand and helped her up. “Let’s see if I can do anything similar.” He pulled a slightly joking face of trepidation. He was expecting to do okay at least, but it seemed to be a pretty different skill set from boxing.

He stuck his hands in the chalk they’d been provided and started cautiously. The point of balance for his centre of gravity was entirely different than what he was used to with boxing. Most of the strength aspect was absolutely fine, but his foot slipped or nearly slipped a couple of times because he wasn’t used to putting all his weight into his toes. “Not like boxing, for sure,” he said, laughing slightly as he almost slipped again and brought his hands together to try and rest for a few seconds.

He tipped his neck side to side and then arranged his hands to continue, looking at the next hold a few times before moving on up. Once he reached the top he whooped in exhilaration.

He tried to arrange his brain to try and climb back down but apparently his spatial awareness didn’t work like that and he couldn't work it out. “I think I’m just going to jump!” he said, glancing over his shoulder to try and lock eyes with Cass.

She hadn't seen Demo in action. She knew he was tall and toned but seeing his muscles contract as she moved up the wall made her smirk.

"Definitely different from boxing." She laughed until he said he was going to jump. She wondered how he looked when in his element in the ring.

"Okay!" Cassandra put her hands up. "Spoons, not forks," she mumbled, doubting her ability to break Demo's fall. "Ready when you are."

Cassandra moved back, her hands in the air waiting for him to jump. She watched him release from the wall and tracked his fall making sure he made it to the mat. "Are you alright?" He seemed to have fallen harder than she did.

He looked back and forth a couple of times checking where he was aiming at before pushing away from the wall and dropping, trying to bend his knees properly. He oofed out loud as he hit, slightly surprised by both how comfortable it was and how weird it was to fling himself from such a height.

After he got over the momentary shock of dropping he broke into a massive grin as the adrenaline hit. "Okay that is a massive rush!" he enthused, nearly springing to his feet. "Getting down is a bit of a shock, but wow it's fun." He was springing a little up and down on his feet.

"You want to tackle the next one first?" he asked, pointing at the red course they'd been pointed at earlier.

Cassandra just laughed. She always thought Demo was reserved but seeing him jump up from the mat, with an excited look on his face.

"You did good!" She grabbed his arm, worried that he still came down hard. "I'm up for trying it again."

She lingered on his arm for a moment before walking back to the wall.

"I think I should maybe lower myself down on my arms a bit next time, but that was fine," he said. The mat was definitely thick enough, clearly designed for exactly that kind of stunt.

He felt her arm linger and a couple of muscles twitched in anticipation as he smiled at her more softly. "I've never been terrible at sports, but team games aren't usually my thing. I'll try most things once though," he said. It had been the same reflex which prevented him swearing or shouting at radio listeners which prevented him from starting with his last sentence just to see how it hit. Not that it was untrue in either placement, and it did make him smirk a little.

He watched as she started to climb. "Little more up and left," he said when one of her feet didn't quite make a hold. Watching her stretch and flex as she solved the bouldering puzzle (apparently they were a thing to solve not just climb) made him a little dry mouthed.

Cassandra looked over her shoulder as Demo directed her movements. She smiled seeing him watch her climbing. "I didn't realize I was hanging out with a sports star." She stuck her tongue out at him as she reached the top of the wall.

She decided to try harder to climb down letting Demo look a bit longer. It felt like tiptoeing through the air as she swayed her hips. She probably over exaggerated her movements but she hoped Demo enjoyed it.

"Just trying to be helpful," he said, holding up his hands. He didn't want to imply she wasn't perfectly capable. "Got a better view of your feet from down here," he teased. The pause before he said feet was almost imperceptible.

The suspicion that she was teasing him slightly was increased towards the point of confirmation when she climbed back down. She was definitely both feeling more confident with the climbing and swaying more than seemed strictly necessary. He grinned as she reached the ground and held up his hands again, this time for high fives. And to transition into a quick hug. "I'm glad we picked this between us," he said with feeling.

He said us. She cheered internally. It really was only their second official date and they seemed to be on the same page, well at least when it came to each other's feelings. It was only the second date.

He was only a few inches taller than her but wrapped in his arms she felt like he towered over her. "I am too." She chirped. She leaned in, stealing a kiss on his sweaty cheek. "So 'sports star’, ready to show me how the next one is done?" Releasing from the embrace she smirked at him with a bit of a glint in her eye.

He snorted when she called him a sports star. Her kiss made him smile though and he was still grinning as they pulled apart. "You know I'd say I'm not that competitive, but both of the dads are pretty competitive over different things, so I've got some," he said and bounded over to the next course.

He traced the track up with his eyes before beginning to climb. This was definitely a bit trickier looking but the climb started easily enough. For a few moves it was easy to follow and flexed a little under his jacket, but realised that it really did hurt his arms more. Then there was a hold to grab for that he couldn't quite reach on his first go. And apparently he mis-judged the range of his spring in that direction and let go of too many points at once. "Oh shit," he called automatically as he tumbled backwards to the mat. Thankfully only from halfway up the wall this time, meaning he landed mostly on his feet and did a stumbling sit down rather than falling onto his back.

Cassandra couldn't help, but laugh. His gusto and analysis only to end up on his bum. She knew he wasn't hurt. Well, maybe his pride. She took a seat outside the perimeter of the mats waiting patiently for him to try again. He was competitive and this was a sport that meant being competitive with yourself.

"Ow," he said dramatically and flopped onto his back before shaking his head and climbing back to his feet. He looked at Cassandra laughing and rolled his eyes. He knew she could tell he wasn't actually hurt so he stuck his tongue out at her and went back to the wall.

He started again and this time he was more successful, getting past his previous sticking point without too much trouble because he had planned better. He felt a bit wobbly by the time he reached the top, but he assumed it was probably because despite each course being relatively short the repeated climbing was harder than it looked. He climbed back down most of the way, jumping the last couple of meters and beginning to shake out his arms and legs. "Okay, this is definitely a workout."

"Your go," he said, gesturing towards the climb he'd just completed.

Cassandra had noted the reach Demo had missed on his first attempt and approached the route. Part of her worried that she wasn't tall enough to make it the way he had. She looked back at him and winked before settling into her starting position.

Her first move went better than she expected but as she reached the crux of the route and pushed her body up towards the hold only grazing it with her fingertips. "I guess not." She huffed, setting back into a controlled position. She tried readjusting her feet, feeling her forearms taut from strain and she went up again. The hold was smooth, but she managed to latch on moving past it.

The last few moves felt easy after that and as she topped out she took a deep breath feeling the work they had been doing. Setting her feet, she aimed at the crash mat, and jumped. Rolling as she hit the pad.

"Definitely a work out." She rolled her wrists trying to coerce the muscles to loosen again.

It was getting less stressful to both climb and watch Cassandra climb with each pass they made. Both because he'd now done the inevitable crashing off the wall, and because he was feeling more confident with the basics for the both of them. He definitely wasn't ready to be going upside down or skipping holds like he'd seen some of the clearly more experienced climbers do, but the basic idea of scaling a wall he felt like he'd got a handle on.

"Boxing is helping a bit, I think," he said, showing her a stretch to help her wrists and hands that he was needing to do for himself anyway. "But I am definitely aware of different muscles being used."

They tackled a couple more routes before their instructor called everyone back in to be fitted for their harnesses to have a go at roped climbing. It was a mildly uncomfortable experience. Soon he was feeling both well strapped in and rather exposed thanks to the fit of the harness. "That is a lot bigger than the bouldering wall," he said, looking up at the actual rock climbing wall towering above them.

Part of her wondered if it would have been easier to start at the wall. "Maybe the rope with help." She tried to encourage Demo as he was getting tied in to the other end of the line.

The wall looked to be about fifteen meters high but the different jutting structures made it hard to tell for sure. One of the workers called for the group to stand back while Demo was in the air. "You've got this." She cheered trying to mentally prepare for her own turn.

"Oh, it'll be fine, just a new thing to try out," he said and shrugged. It wasn't the height that was really bothering him and he was getting used to the harness as time passed.

All kitted up with a harness, helmet and safety line Demo nodded to the instructor that he was ready to go and tossed a wink over at Cassandra on a whim, took a breath that he puffed back out and started to climb the route that had been pointed out to him. It wasn't easy per se but because he'd done the bouldering first he had a better idea of how to hold his weight and how the different types of holds worked. There was a bit of an outcropping to negotiate and it felt weird to hold his weight like that so it took him several extra seconds to work out his next move. Every now and then the instructor would call out encouragement or advice, helping him spot smaller holds or find foot placements that got a bit lost in the sea of multicoloured bits of plastic screwed to the wall.

And all of a sudden he hit the top and the difficulty in getting there, and it had been a challenge to his newly minted climbing muscles in places, the difficulty faded away with the euphoria of reaching a new goal. He whooped in delight. In the rush it took him several long seconds to process the instructions for coming back down the wall and he was definitely a little unsure of his bounce strength as he did so. But once he was unhooked he bounded over to Cass and grinned widely at her and giving her a brief hug, and a spontaneous smacking kiss to her cheek. "Such a rush," he enthused.

She felt her face flush as she landed his kiss. He'd certainly been more affectionate that she had anticipated but she didn't mind. She liked the affection.

Scrunching her face at him she blew a kiss back to him and she moved into position on the wall. She had watched his ascent closely and thought she might be able to do it. The overhang might be an issue. Once she was tied in, their belayer pulled the rope taut, her harness pulling against her buttocks and legs. "Ready." Pushing off the starting holds. The rope sure did help, she thought breezing through the first section.

Pulling her body weight perpendicular to the ground she tried to keep her weight as close to the wall as possible but slipped, swinging out and away from the wall as if she were weightless. A grunt emanating from below her. Her belayer bore down on his end on the rope keeping her steady.

"Grab back onto the wall!" He shouted. She did as she was told, slowing her momentum.

"I'm fine." Breathing deeply she looked at the outcropping against and attempted to reach the length of it, losing her feet on the holds. A grunt escaped her as she shimmied up the wall to the top.

"I come down now?" She said through breathy gasps, debating whether she had her fill of climbing.

He ducked his head after the kiss, hoping it wasn't unwelcome. He'd acted on instinct still riding the high of reaching the top of the wall. Luckily she didn't seem to mind. He flashed her a quick smile before she headed off for her own attempt.

He winced and sucked in a breath when she came away from the wall, but when she managed to grab hold again he had to hold in a whoop. The adrenaline rush was definitely pushing him into far more overt action and reaction than he usually displayed. It was a fun feeling.

He gave a polite clap along with a few others in the group when she reached the top. He'd forgotten what it was like to have one of your friends far up in a precarious position. And what he'd been used to was friends on broomsticks and all the inherent magical safety available. The ropes seemed just as safe.

"You got this," he called up to Cassandra. He was impressed by her resilience, especially getting back on after coming away from the wall.

Cassandra touched down with the grace of a professional quidditch player, waiting to be untied. "It was harder than you made it look." She pouted only to stick her tongue out a moment later. She liked teasing him and seeing this more energetic side of Demo had her coming out of her own shell more.

Their belayer nodded to her that she was free to move along. They had only done one roped route, but Cassandra could feel her muscles starting to ache from the fatigue. Worried, she defaulted to Demo on whether they continued. He'd been practically beaming and didn't want that to stop.

He chuckled and stuck his own tongue out in return. "To be fair I think it felt harder than it looked. Boxing gives me plenty of arm and core strength which definitely helped," he said.

His two different journalistic jobs meant that if he was looking for it he was pretty good at reading body language and tone and Cassandra definitely seemed to be flagging a bit. "I'm good to do one more after they've been through everyone else," he said, gesturing faintly to the remainder of their little group that he'd been ignoring. "But if you'd rather pass over or get away now I'm cool with that," he said. He'd had a great time, but it was about spending time with Cass not really about the climbing.

He laughed and grinned at her before giving her a wink. "Well I'm not going to argue about that," he said, deeply amused and pleased.

They continue to chat until his turn came around again. It was definitely shaping up to be a good date in his eyes. He'd definitely be ready for some food and a drink after this. They were learning a little more about each other all the time and he was enjoying it. Next time she could plan the date.
