What: Sibling's Meet Up (Drinks, Dinner, See Where the Night Goes)
When: 1/21/2028
Where: Leaky Cauldron
Warnings: N/A
Completion Status: Ongoing Complete

It was that time of year. Roxanne didn't know what it was but by the end of January she felt like she needed to do more. She never knew what 'more' meant but January flew by faster than a snitch and she wondered what she had done all month. She pulled out her phone and found her brother's number.

To Freddy: If you're not buried in case work, want to meet you're little sis for some drinks. My treat?

Be there in ten.

After messaging his sister, Fred gathered up his research, slipping bookmarks between pages where needed. He left the books in a neat stack on his desk and locked the rest of the paperwork up in the charmed safe beneath. As a junior barrister, he wasn't afforded his own office, but he did have a cubicle in the row of cubicles in the large room that led to the primary barrister's offices. Unsurprisingly, he was the last one there this late on a Friday night.

Not able to apparate directly from the Ministry, Fred made his way to the floo hall, taking a bit of powder before stepping into the green flames. Moments later, he stepped out of the floo at the Leaky Cauldron, glancing around with only the faintest grimace at the crowd as he looked for Roxy. Finally spotting his sister, he weaved his way through the throng to join her at the table she'd picked.

"Hey Rox," he greeted her as he sat down. "Been stuck in your head too long?" he asked knowingly. He was pretty sure she was more extroverted than he, but that she was also prone to getting lost in her work and neglecting her social life.

Roxanne had carved out a secluded corner towards the back of the Leaky within eyesight of the hearth. She knew her brother wouldn't apparate from the Ministry and when she saw his frame coming out of the fireplace she waved him down.

She smiled at his question. They really knew each other well it seems, or at least he knew her. "Yeah, I've been tunneling and with the Magpies being defending champs it's been so busy with people gearing back up for the upcoming season." She averted her gaze a bit. It seemed even the small little workshop she carved out in her flat had been neglected recently as she passed it to fall into bed every night.

"I thought maybe a good chat and a couple of drinks were warranted." She didn't drink much, mostly when she was restless and the thought had entered her mind halfway through last week.

She checked the time. "Are you stuck in your head too long, too?" She turned her phone around showing him the time.

It seemed to Fred that it didn't matter much who the defending Quidditch champs were, that McLaggen's Sports would always be busy as the season prepared to begin, but he'd never been as enthusiastic about the sport as his parents are sister, so he didn't bother commenting on it.

"Certainly warranted," he agreed easily, though he wouldn't be drinking alcohol tonight. He'd not had a drop to drink since that night all those years ago, but he didn't feel as though he were missing out on anything. Even with therapy, he didn't think drinking would ever be a relax and loosen up activity for him. "I might prefer a fizzy drink and maybe a fish and chips, though. I might have forgotten to eat dinner tonight." The admission came with a tilt of his head and furrowed brows, as though he was trying to remember for sure either way.

Fred cringed faintly when she showed him the time, not having noticed it when he'd messaged with her. It was quite a bit later than he'd realized. "I suppose so. This case we're working on feels quite high stakes." And he hoped that if his research led to a conviction, he'd finally get promoted from Junior Barrister.

Roxanne remembered her brother didn't drink. He never judged her for drinking either way. "I might join you on that fish and chips."

She sighed at her brothers admission. "You work so hard. I hope it pays off." She flagged down one of the servers and ordered for the both of them.

She looked off into the crowd. Groups of people conversing and laughing. "I'm trying to remind myself that I need to be social. It's easy getting stuck in projects." She looked up at her brother. "Trying to balance that and meet new people is difficult though."

"Let me guess, you forgot to eat, too?" he teased his sister lightly. It was always interesting, the ways in which they were similar.

Fred's head tilted slightly as he nodded. "You and me both." He leaned back as she ordered, chiming in with his drink preference after she'd done so.

"Oh, I don't know. With all the family obligations, especially around the holidays, social has a way of feeling overrated," he said a touch dryly. As much as he enjoyed being around other people, it truly did get exhausting around and just after the holidays. He wasn't surprised he'd been losing himself in his work so thoroughly even this far into January. "Have you been trying to meet new people, then?"

"I can understand that." They were Weasleys after all. Though she didn't quite know how to answer his question. "I've been trying. I went to a club recently and ran into an old housemate." Roxanne smiled. She'd enjoyed Iris's show and her guided tour of Taboo.

She looked away. "I'm just not quite sure how well it's going."

At the mention of a club, Fred furrowed his brow, wondering what sort of club she'd gone to. And then he wondered if he really wanted to know. Just the general name, a club, stirred up all sorts of thoughts of how it could be incredibly unsafe. "Yeah? They wouldn't really be new people though?" he said, focusing on the person mentioned instead of the place.

"Are you okay, Rox? Really?" he asked, concerned at the way she'd looked away. Had something happened to her? Or was she simply lonely?

"I'm safe." She assured him, reading his look. The server came back with their drinks. She thanked them looking down at her drink.

"I..."

It wasn't often she touched on the subject. Her brother knew of course but there weren't very many people she truly had to talk to about it. Could he understand? She couldn't remember the last time he was in a relationship or wanted that for himself.

"I want to start dating, but I'm not quite sure how to start? All things considered that is." Doubts aside, he was her big brother.

Gods, they really were a pair, weren't they? Raised by extroverted parents known for jumping in with things, and yet both of them seemed to be moving at a snails pace to explore their romantic sides. They both had their reasons, he knew, even though Roxanne didn't know his, but it was interesting to think about.

"I get that," he said with a slow nod. "I've... actually been thinking about it too? But you're right... where to even begin?" He couldn't help wondering... "Is there someone you're interested in?"

She heard her brother's tone grow soft. "Really?" The surprise was enough to knock her out of her own head. "That's something." Her voice matched his tone.

"I don't really know." Roxanne admitted. "I just feel like I need to put myself out there more. I haven't really dated since I came out."

It felt like a big step to tell his sister that he'd been thinking about it, but it was something he'd been working on in therapy. His therapist had also suggested that it might do him good to talk to someone close to him about what he'd gone through; he'd not worked up the courage for that just yet, though. "Yeah," he confirmed, lifting a hand to scrub over his short, slightly unkempt beard. Had he forgotten to trim this morning? He couldn't remember.

"Is there some sort of queer singles group or event or something?" he asked curiously, truly not knowing anything about the dating scene in general much less the queer dating scene. "Speed dating for lesbians?" he added with a little grin. Would he feel comfortable doing something like that? He truly wasn't sure.

Roxanne contorted her face. The simple answer was that she didn't know. She just assumed queer dating would be the same as straight dating. She laughed, "Speed dating?" Somehow that sounded worse than starting a traditional dating profile.

She composed herself looking back at her brother. "What are your plans?" Really she was curious, but she hoped he could impart some sense of direction.

Fred shrugged rather exaggeratedly at the laughter and question. It wasn't as though he were experienced in dating as an adult, and the little he wasn't sure that counted for much considering how much more focused he'd been on school.

"I... uh... I don't know," he admitted, shrugging one shoulder this time. "I'm not sure I'm brave enough to join any of those dating apps. But there also isn't anyone in particular I'm eager to ask out? So I think we're equally lost in this venture." He could just imagine what mum and dad would say if they could hear them now. Better they didn't tell them, he thought with no small amount of amusement.

It appeared they were in this together. Part of her wished that her brother had some innate wisdom to impart even if it had been a long time, but the fact that they both were venturing out on this together meant she wasn't alone.

"Do you think we could keep each other up to date? I mean on our progress, I'd hate to go through this alone and it feels like we are both starting for a similar position." Fred looked thoughtful, she thought as she took a sip of her drink. She wouldn't pry but she wondered what was going on in his head.

His brow furrowed at the request, thinking it rather silly that she felt like she even needed to ask. "Yeah, of course, Rox," he told her. Before he could say anything else, their food was brought out, and he thanked the server with a polite smile before turning back to his sister. The basket was steaming, so he decided to wait a minute before starting to eat.

"What else has been going on with you? Discovered any knew fancy repair charms or anything?" he asked with a light note of teasing. He'd never been the sort of tinkerer that Roxy was, but he loved that they'd both pursued their passions. In that, he rather thought his parents could be proud of them both.

Roxy smiled then stuck her tongue out. "I've been studying how to identify and remove jinxes from used brooms." It was something Roxy recognized in the past years. Wizard families coming in for brooms and not being able to afford even older models. "At least this way it gives some kids a chance to try out." She felt herself getting choked up. She loved Quidditch and brooms and she wanted to see that excitement on every kid's face.

That sounded like a productive use of her time and skills, Fred thought with a short nod. "Definitely. That's great, Rox." And at least one of them loved Quiddtich, even if Roxy had given up the opportunity for a fantastic career in the game. He was proud of his sister for forging her own path and deciding for herself what a reward Quidditch related career would be for her. "Does McLaggen's have a program for that, then? Or are you trying to start one up?" Were the brooms she fixed donated in the first place or bought? He had a lot of follow up questions, though that was an occupational hazard.

She beam beneath her curls. "It's an existing program. Mr. McLaggen has really worked with the community on it." She didn't see Cormac that often but she admired how much he cared. "It give me something to do outside of sales." She wanted to ask him about his cases, but she remembered something he had told her while going through his exams. Ongoing cases were not dinner talk.

"We really are a good blend of our parents, aren't we?" She didn't need an answer, it was a proud observation.

"Oh, that's great," Fred said. He picked up a piece of fish, taking a bite. He was glad that Roxy was able to do more than just being a retail grunt. She was wildly talented, and he'd have hated to see it wasted just sitting behind a register. "And you get to do what you've always had an interest in," he acknowledged.

Fred pulled a face at her words, chuckling and shaking his head. "Oh, I don't know. You? Definitely. Me? Not so much." He wasn't fishing, either. He'd never really felt a strong connection to their parents' personalities. In fact, he'd always felt like he took more after Uncle Percy, but it seemed an awkward thing to say out loud, so he never had.

Roxy dashed her fish and chips with a gratuitous amount of malt vinegar giving her brother a sly smile. She could understand what he was saying but there's one thing that they both got from their parents: their obsession. As long she could remember they both threw themselves into something full force no matter the cost.

The fish flaked apart beautifully underneath the golden crispy batter and as she dug into her food, she looked back up at her brother. "Either way, thank you. I didn't even know I needed this." She popped another piece of fish into her mouth.

"You're welcome," he said simply, pausing to offer her a small smile before taking another bite of food. He'd needed it more than he'd realized, as well, and he was glad she'd messaged. And maybe if they did this more often, he'd finally figure out a way to share what he'd been through, like his therapist had encouraged.
