Who: Mary & Dean
Where: Outside Apocolyptic Brew
When: After her arrival.
What: Picking up mom.
Status: Closed
Warnings: None, probably.

Dean sat at one of the tables in the library and stared off into the distance, trying to wrap his head around all of what was happening. Alec. Soulless Sam. Mom. More than ever it really felt like a cruel trick at the hands of Chuck and there was nothing he could do about it. Nothing at all. His mother was waiting for him to pick her up and everyone kept asking if he was okay. He glanced down at his phone after hearing it vibrate and he looked down at it in anger, his jaw clenched tightly. Suddenly, he snapped, and he grabbed the glass next to him and threw it across the room, making it shatter into pieces.

Finally, he stood from the table, shoved his phone in his pocket, grabbed his keys, and went out to the garage to get in the car. In his anger, he found himself going faster than he should have and it wasn't much longer until he was outside of the place his mother was waiting. He turned off the engine and got out shakily, his gaze fixated on Mary, remembering how he had held her lifeless body in his arms only about a year ago. "Mom?" His voice broke in the whisper and he couldn't help the tears in his eyes. "It's okay, everything is going to be okay."

Mary’s first moments in Vallo had been [...] fraught with jerk reactions, to say the least. After suddenly finding herself in the forest near the DOA building, her elbow had immediately made contact with the nose of someone who’d perfectly managed to mind their own business until that very moment, followed by apologies as Mary frantically tried to grab that one clean diner napkin from her pockets to offer it to someone who now had a very bloody nose that gushed like there was no tomorrow. But a few moments later, Mary was all caught up, and came to realize that the promise of a new reality was a slightly better one than finding herself in the future. Maybe.

Her experiences with either had thoroughly sucked, with the whole angel apocalypse and grown up boys and whatnot.

But she’d found her way to the city, and still had the presence of mind to dig out a few crinkled bills from her coat pocket. Tea. Something warm to hold in her hands to fight off a sudden autumn chill that her clothes were just barely equipped to deal with as she waited for Dean. And Sam didn’t have his soul. Dean was [...] Dean. Stoic, closed-off and no doubt rushing over here at speeds that would make any traffic cop startle. And Jack [...] Somewhere off the side, a car door slammed shut. The sound of familiar foot steps, rushing in her general direction.

And Mary looked up to tears.

Jack. A hard lump of emotion in her throat. She took a second, to wash it down with tea, to collect herself. "Dean." And then her arms wrapped themselves around her son's frame easily. "It's okay. I'm here."

His eyes closed and he inhaled deeply, his face buried in her hair. It felt so good to hold her in his arms again and fell the warmth of her body, hear her voice and it was overwhelming. She said his name and it took everything in him not to break down right there on the street. His arms tightened around her and he worked to calm himself down. She had just shown up and didn't need the extra bullshit to be saddled on her so quickly. As far as he was concerned, she didn't need to know that Sam had arrived without his soul.

"How are you, mom? Did you get the orientation thing? You don't need to stay at those apartments they have. You can stay in the bunker with me and-" he has started to say Adam, but he was a subject that never came up before and she had been gone before Adam returned again. He had no idea how she was going to take that, but he couldn't keep it a secret for too long. "Do you want to go to the diner, maybe? I'm sure we could get some greasy bacon burgers and pie. Or, we can just go back to the bunker. All of your things are there so you don't have to worry about buying anything."

"Yes. After I clocked them with my elbow." But it was a lot. Dean being like this, going from one subject to the next in a matter of seconds, almost like he was afraid he'd say the wrong damn thing, like you know, that she'd died again, all the while she was wrapped up in one of the tightest hugs she'd ever gotten from him. "I'm here," she repeated again, quieter this time. "I'm okay." But things decidedly were Not Fine; she'd only just begun to figure out how to mother two grown Hunters, and a soulless son? She had no idea what to do there. Sam. Jack. She'd opened her mouth to say those names, but rejected the idea. Not now. It wasn't the right time time.

Okay. Mary drew in a deep breath, and looked her son in the eyes. "The diner sounds great."

"Yeah, well, that's the hunter in you." Dean snorted in amusement and finally pulled away so they could head over to the diner, his arm around her waist as they walked along the sidewalk. "So..." he wasn't sure what to say and he was quiet for a while. "This place is all sorts of crazy and you never know what to expect. Plus, there's all sorts of cool shit, like a freaking Jedi temple. Can you believe it? Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi. Adam and I totally-" he cut himself short and cleared his throat. "Adam, he's a good friend of mine, but we definitely spazzed when we met Han and Luke. There were dinosaurs last week and we went to this crazy awesome water park that was in a telephone- no, a police call box? Not sure what the difference is." It was easy to ramble on about the place and it was much better than talking about more somber things.
