I really love when strangers snark at me to learn English when I switch to my native tongue for any reason.

Sure, random person in the grocery store, for your comfort I will hold this private conversation with a Romanian in English so that you can understand, but she can't. Maybe learn to mind your business instead.

Apparently I should start having all my private phone calls on facetime so that other people can complain they don't understand us.

I think that's what was most startling. I got a call in the grocery store, and since it's long distance I wasn't going to ask them to call me back.

It's like they don't understand that this country doesn't have an official language as it is, but because they don't understand something it's wrong.

Apparently not to nosy, busy bodies with nothing but time on their hands to interject in other peoples lives. It made me realise I usually make a conscious effort to hide my accent.

Tragically, I've gotten very used to that. At home it was very similar, to the point where my parents tried to assimilate to shield my brother and I from it.
