"That will be all, Pardy." Draco eyed the House Elf and threw it a dismissive gesture - the creature bowed deeply and dorkily backed out the room, leaving Draco to his thoughts in the East wing. With no regard for the lavishly decked and decorated dinner table to his side, he crossed over to the window and threw an impatient, anticipatory look into the darkened yard of Malfoy Manor. It was nearing seven.
It had been ages, it seemed, that a selective House dinner like this had been in the cards. The war had muddled everything up, of course, and to Draco, it had thrown the Slytherins more into disarray than anyone else. He was especially adamant about seeing Pansy tonight - it had been so long that he didn't even remember the atrocious smell of his ex-girlfriend's favourite fragrance. Not that he'd bother to share this assessment with her: for one, there was something vaguely adorable and amusing about it, and secondly, closing ranks once more was what mattered to him.
He flung himself down into a leather fauteuil as he waited, thoughts shifting to his next guest, Zabini. Blaise had always been a particularly hard one to peg down, his ego seeking to compete with Draco's as had always been wont to do. Nonetheless he was one of the old circle, and his position at the Ministry meant that Draco couldn't let them drift apart. On that account, he thought, his father had raised him well.
Then there was Theo, the one whose company he kept the most often. This meant he ought to value Theo's attendance the least, but instead the prospect of having Nott's familiar presence here tonight reassured him in the face of having to entertain two estranged old friends. Theo didn't have to prove himself.
As for the others, Draco was sure they would know that tonight's dinner was a test of sorts. He thoughtlessly fingered a napkin and turned it over, leaving everything in its right place. He was looking forward to this.
