All right, I should probably be grateful to be living in a world with no darkspawn. No worries about getting woken up in the middle of the night by an attack of shrieks, no getting sent into the Deep Roads to investigate no-one-knows-what...instead I'm getting paid to sit on a beach surrounded by largely naked people. Many of them women. Very pretty women. Who might drown, in which case I'd get to save the day and be a hero, hurrah.

...so why am I so bored?

I tried to buy a sword and shield just so I could get in some practice on the side, even if it doesn't look like I'll need it here, but Maker's teeth, the paperwork...and one merchant even threatened to call the police when I asked about it.

Actually, wearing armor here would be like walking around wearing my own portable oven, so that's just as well.

Can we even get armor here? Something that would actually work? I saw a glimpse of something they called armor in one of those movie-things. It was just absurd, no one would be able to move in armor made like that.

There are a few times it would have come in handy.

Probably not. Servants took my armor when I first arrived, and I haven't been able to find it.

Come in handy? Here? Against what, one of these car-things?

A while back some sort of magical beasts attacked. The siege didn't last long, but I certainly would have preferred to have my armour and my knights here.

Attacked here? I thought those sorts of things didn't happen in this world.

Usually they don't. It only happened the once, as far as I know. The cause still hasn't been explained to me, but there are magic users here and they can't all be goodness and butterflies.

It's a mix, in my experience. Some mages are good, honest people trying to get by, and some are evil demon-summoning maleficar. I just try to make sure they're the latter if I'm in a position where smiting is called for.

But yes, if it happened once it can happen again.

That sounds like a reasonable enough attitude.

I'm Arthur.

Alistair. Former Grey Warden, former almost-Templar, former royal bastard, former a lot of things. Good to meet you.

Well met, Alistair. We didn't have those titles in Camelot--aside from royal bastard, I'm sure my father sired a few of those.

Yeah, I figured not, but thought I might as well mention them. They come up sooner or later. Handy to get them out of the way, if only to make it clear they're no longer relevent.

...waaaaaaaaait, you're a prince?

I am, yes. Formerly of Camelot. This place saw fit to leave me the title, though apparently it's largely a ceremonial one here in England.

Huh, fancy that. Technically so am I, I think, except that I renounced any claim to the throne. And as mentioned there was that whole illegitimate problem. I got some of the responsibility for a while but none of the benefits or fancy hats. So you weren't kidding about servants taking your armot, then?

There have been times I considered renouncing my claim. But there are no other heirs, and I have a responsibility to my kingdom.

I wasn't kidding, no. That doesn't seem like a very good joke. I'm funnier than that.

I...wow, uh, yeah. I was in a similar position, sort of. For a while. The king died, and ultimately it came down to giving the kingdom either to me or to his queen. Frankly I've never been trained to rule and can't imagine I'd be any good at it, my heritage has always been a background thing, so I was relieved when Anora got the job instead. She was a strong, capable queen. Ambitious, but good at her work.

But sometimes I wonder, especially since coming here. I've met all these people who say they came from a world where I did become king. I thought I had a different responsibility to the kingdom, but what if I was wrong?

...sorry, sorry, I'm rambling. Anyway. I'm sure you can make better jokes than that, I just didn't think there were servants in this new world, I hadn't seen any.
