  • That is utterly gorgeous!
  • I don't know about your recipient, but I do like it much: the tenderness of the gestures and the fierceness of the expressions, the landscape, the colouring, the light...
    • Thank you!

The light was a challenge because Snape has his back to it. I'd never attempted that kind of lighting before. And then it's the night as well. I had to look at a few examples to gather my courage XD.

Snape and Harry always make for an interesting combination. I was very lucky with Mary's prompt!

    WOW...

I'm just starting to dabble with watercolors, so I'm beginning to appreciate just what you accomplished in the merging of ink and watercolor here. Such amazing control.

My favorite part has to be what you've done with Snape's robes, contrasting the black ink with water color to give it so many layers and movement.
    • Thanks! :-)

To be honest, I find a mix of ink and watercolour easier to control than anything that does not involve ink. I just like to have my lines in place. In the previous picture I did like this, I added the larger black surfaces after the paint; here, I did all the inks first and painted afterwards. I'm not sure what's best... In any case, ink just makes me feel comfy :-). I think it's the first time that I put it to good use for shadowing, though...
  • That is so beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous!
  • Lovely. And you're absolutely right about the colors...this just wouldn't have been the same in black and white.
    • I'm glad you like it! Much though I love black and white, there are things you just can't do with it.

Mind you, it took me a suprisingly long time to get used to the idea of drawing a Snape with skin tones. Pure white just looks so good on him :P...
  • Oh that's absolutely wonderful. :)
  • beautiful!!!!! (looks longingly at icon) great colors and shading, texture on the hills, the lighting, the sky, their facial expression and body movement, Snape's buttons, Harry's socks, the not-full moon - everything is perfect. brava!!
    • Feel free to snatch the icon if you like - just credit me as the artist :-).

It's a bit difficult sometimes when I mix ink and paint to figure out what work should be done by the inks and what by the paint. Here I think they rather complement each other, also because I used paper that is more textured than the kind I have been using lately. I'm very happy you like the result :D.

      Thank you!
  • Wow, this is beautiful--the colors, the shading, and the very protective way Snape is holding Harry! It makes me a little sad that Harry will be turned over to the Dursleys, because the Snape in your picture convinces me that he would be a much better parent.
  • Wow, you are really making great use of the watercolour here, combining it with your exquisite ink line work.

The sky is marvelous, churning and murky and magical. It has just the right chill for the cool light of the moon. I just love it. **dashes off to read the fic***
  • Lullabye

Absolutely beautiful. I stood back a few feet to view this image and that really revealed how well done the shading is, and how true to the light source. It's a powerful composition. I really am a fan of the strong lines of pen and ink, but in my opinion the watercolors add dimensionality which enhances the whole work. I particularly liked the effect of the clouds in the night sky, how the light to darkness right to left follows the flow of his wind stirred hair and robes. Reading your prior posts, I know you were concerned about control with the watercolors, but I think this is super.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

    I love it! :D

    Neke
  • This is extraordinarily lovely, as usual.

  • thank you!

This is really beautiful, Sigune (and would you believe, you posted it on my birthday?) I love the colors, and also the connection between the characters - you have exactly the right blend of tension and tenderness here. I do have all I've done so far of the second story rescued, and will be working on it, as time permits, later this week.

    Lovely job!
    • I'm so glad you like the picture - and also that it happened to be ready on your birthday :D!

The interhuman relationships is your stories are always very interesting and well done, and it is just this kind of thing that I like to try and express in my drawings. Thanks for a great prompt!

As for the story, please just take the time you need. I am curious, but patient ;-).
  • Wow, this is just amazing. Wonderful work.
  • That is beautiful. I love the detail, especially Snape's robe, and Harry's little hand on Snape's shoulder -- for some reason that stood out and made me go... awwww how sweet! Wonderful job on this.
  • just gorgeous
  • All Hallow's Eve

Very nice work, Sigune! And I hope everyone rushed out and read Mary-j's story. I'm not a visual artist, so I won't comment on the technical aspects. I'll second what someone said about the tenderness of his gesture vs. the fierceness of his expression...

One of the nice things about art is that it makes you see different connections. The one that clicked here is: has anyone read Peter Beagle's The Innkeeper's Song? At the end, an orphaned teenager finds out the truth about his parents' murder and his own rescue, and what he wants to know is if this song, this lullaby he remembers, was from them? The (ugly, unsympathetic, abusive) innkeeper who had raised him replies it must have been, it's the sort of song only a parent would sing.

Read the book, then reread Mary's story.

Oh, I just love it. The warmth of the red in Harry's cut, Severus' gash, and his mouth really contrasts with the coolness, the fear of this.
  • I love this. Especially Snape’s nose.
  • Oh, I do like this--very much!
  • Wow, it's beautiful! :D
  • Lovely. The emotion comes through cleanly and clearly.
  • very nice!
  • Oh, that's beautiful! I love Snape being fierce and protective here--there's more fierceness and protectiveness than there is affection, which works for Snape. ^_^
  • I love it!
  • Brills.
  • That is so sweet! I especially love the little details, like Snape's collar overlapping Harry's arm.
  • Good God, Sigs, you are so incredibly talented.
    • LOL! You wouldn't want to see all the disastrous tries I went through before it came out looking decent XD...

      Thank you!

Beautiful. This reminds me of a book illustration.
  • I always admire your work, and what you have done with this piece is lovely. I can almost feel the chill of a cold October wind, and the movement in Severus' robes and hair is fabulous.
  • Sorry for being so late!
This is so absolutely gorgeous, but you know that already. Love it, love it. :)
    • I'm so glad :D! It took me a long time to get it right, but it was fun to do. I also learnt a thing or two that turned out to be of help for a certain other painting ;-).

      Thank you!
  • Awww... hooray for child!Harry clutching so adorably at Severus... and Severus looking so protective and yet stern at the same time!
