Title: New Beginnings

Prompt: What’s love got to do with it?
Summary: Harry helps Severus when he’s in need.
A/N: Bad fic is bad. I was interrupted several times while writing it, and I think I lost the flow. Ah well—couldn’t let the challenge pass by without trying to commemorate it ^^

“Potter.”

Harry blinked. “Severus.” He opened the door a bit wider, eyes flitting to the suitcase by Severus’ feet. “Please, come in.”

Severus hesitated. “I...should perhaps not have bothered you. I—”

“Nonsense,” Harry replied, stepping back and gesturing Severus through. “If you can’t come to me, who can you come to?”

They had worked together long enough that Harry could recognize the small flicker in Severus’ eyes as relief. He grasped Severus’ arm as he walked through the door, and was surprised to feel a slight tremor shaking him. What could upset Severus this much?

An hour and a half later Severus had two cups of tea in him and the nearly-imperceptible shaking had stopped.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Harry asked softly, refilling Severus’ cup. He’d gathered that Severus needed to stay with him for a while, but hadn’t ascertained the cause.

Severus stared at his tea for several long moments before replying. “Lucius and I are having…difficulties.”

“Ah. Well,” Harry said, smiling gently at Severus, “no one ever said love was easy. You’re more than welcome to stay here as long as you need. You’ve been together what—three years? I can understand needing time away from each other, especially after a fight.”

Severus frowned slightly but managed to meet Harry’s eyes. “I do not believe I will be going back to him,” he said at last.

“Oh,” Harry said, startled. “Oh.” He paused, then smiled as brightly as he felt appropriate under the circumstances. “Well, you’re still welcome here as long as you like. However long it takes you to get back on your feet.”

Harry stood and grabbed hold of the tea tray, walking toward the kitchen to give Severus a moment of privacy.

“Potter—Harry,” Severus called at his retreating form. Harry paused and turned, bright green eyes meeting his own with tenderness Severus couldn’t remember ever having seen directed at him. “Thank you.”

The brilliance of Potter’s smile was worth the concession. “You’re welcome,” he replied, turning back toward the kitchen.

For the first time in nearly three years, Severus truly smiled.

	Haha. Well thank you very much : ) As for more, I don't know about that. Any number of stories could come out of this and I don't realy have a plot for any of them... This is a shortened idea/spin-off of the first drabble I tried to write, though, that was actually going to be almost fic-length. xD Maybe I'll finish that someday? ~Torina (Reply to this) (Parent)

You used a line, a variation thereof, that is almost always guaranteed to 'get me'(tears well up) in any relationship fic no mater what pairing "bright green eyes meeting his own with tenderness Severus couldn’t remember ever having seen directed at him"
I always of course see that as a possibility with Lucius but I can acknowledge that many people don't write him that way.

You just totally pulled at my heart with this. I don't see why you think it's bad fic at all...it's a lovely snapshot of that moment of choice. Will Harry invite him in? How will he respond to the suitcase? Will he be kind?

The wrong responses and a relationship could never happen, especially with someone as prickly as Severus. You showed such a tender moment so beautifully... I loved this.

Of course I'm a total sucker for any time poor Sev finally gets any emotional need met.

*glows* Thank you, Clare! Your comment has made me smile so much : ) I'm really, really glad you liked it, and that it hit you emotionally. That's the highest compliment I think a writer could ever receive, really. So thank you!! *hugs*

As for Lucius, I know snow and I give him the short end of the stick a lot, but I really wasn't trying to cast him in a bad light here. I was just thinking...okay, Severus' relationship with Lucius just...doesn't work out. Neither of them are really happy. Who does Severus turn to? And of course, being myself, I chose Harry. xD

Hee. Yes! That. And I'm proud that I managed to trash the snucius without ever insulting Lucius. I totally held myself back on that one. *nods* *grin*

Thank you, and yes, yay for snarry! However preprepreslashy it was. Hahaha. But yes, gosh, I just can't imagine who else he'd go to, really. Who else knows him like Harry does at this point? So hopefully they'll have many many years of happiness together. What else could we expect for our two favorite boys? : )

You do realise, don't you, that Lucius is just misunderstood? He's a darling, really, a cuddly, fluffy, maniacal, murderer underneath that cold exterior. He just needs a hug ... and that four-eyed twit will only get in the way!

Now, write the sequel, where Severus *sighs* goes back to his true love (in the leather-clad, whipping way) and they live happily ever after ... with me.

Wonderful writing, sweetie; I loved it.

Ha. I get the feeling Severus gave him many hugs, and likely more, over the last three years. Cleary it didn't do anything to change Lucius personality. *grin*

And, hmm. I'd intended it to read that Severus and Lucius were mutually not working out. But you pose an interesting scenario--I have the feeling you could straighten out any problems they were having. A night or two down in the dungeons with you and they'll be wondering why they thought it couldn't work out! *bows down to WhiteCotton's all-encompassing power*

Hahaha. All true (except the smelling bad--can't imagine that, really) but if WhiteCotton comes back along she should note that I never said a harsh word about him! Their relationship just didn't work out. Ha, she treated him worse in her own drabble than I did in mine! *is defended from any wrath*

Thank you : ) I'm glad you liked it. I just like the idea of Severus having someone (okay, Harry) to go to any time he's in need. He deserves that. : )

Hahaha. Well, think of it this way--yes, there is snarry in the drabble's future. And 95% of anything I ever write again is going to be snarry. So...pretend the next fic is a continuation of this one? xD I do have the larger fic this was sort of a spin-off of outlined on my hard drive... Maybe I'll write it up someday ^^

	Oh, I really liked this, babe. Short yet sweet and poignant. Love that Harry is the one Severus feels best able to turn to, and that Harry takes him in without qualm. Would love to see a follow-up where Lucius realizes precisely how badly he lost.... grin (Reply to this)

	i gueeeess that scenario with lucius coming knocking on harry door to get his sevvy back and the three of them ending up in a big beautiful manor with five dogs, ten cats and 20 children won't happen :D i love you harry - he is such a good friend, something severus needs badly in his life - maybe more than lovers ...
