It suprises me just how bleak Blackest Night is, and just how futile a victory in the end will be.

I'm just going with the assumption that they'll bring everyone back by the end who wasn't dead already, and then promise no more gratuitous deaths for at least half a decade.

Doesn't bother me. In my view this is just reality(so to speak) catching up to the DCU and the mess it's been, which is what FC should have been.

It's a story about an invading army of the undead who add to their ranks with each death... I think "bleak" was the MINIMUM I was expecting.

Mother of God, that's horrifying. Possibly even more so than the Hawks death at the end of the first issue. I mean, I know that they torment their victims in order to maximise the emotional content of the hearts they take, but even so...

I think that I hate these things even more than the evil New Gods from Final Crisis.

As horrifying and perverse as the likes of Desaad-possessed Mary Marvel was, at least all she/he/they did was beat people up. She didn't sadistically murder people to my knowledge.

What does the scouter say about their power levels?

It's over 56,56%!

...

No, that really doesn't sound as good.

The scythe and eye in the montage in the first scan would've been nice foreshadowing of Nekron if the cat hadn't already been let out of the bag.

I know I should be offended by this (1. Fridge. 2. Such an obvious storytelling tool to employ) but...this was well done. I barely know Jason Rusch, or Gen, but I instantly felt heartsick as I watched them literally being torn apart. I felt that tension behind my eyes that always happens when I witness something heartbreaking. I think it maybe has something to do with Franco Battiato's 'Ruby Tuesday' playing in the background, but, still. Well played, Mr. Johns. Well played indeed.

This scene would have been even better if the positions were reversed.

I feel like Jason hasn't been an interesting character since Dan Jolley left his title and Stuart Moore dispensed with most of his worst personal issues.

I liked Gehenna. :(

So do we all agree Gen will be back when this is over?

Something tells me when this is over the only way to stop the Black Lanterns is to return the souls to the bodies. Logically, they can't just kill some and resurrect them and let others not. Yet logic also says that for story-purposes Aquaman and J'onn will be back and the Graysons and the Drakes won't be. Dolphin will be back, but Tula won't be. The interesting thing will be if Johns actually does bring lower-tier heroes like the Dibneys or Ronnie back.

As much as I HATE that they killed Gehenna (and ouch Jason being in part responsible for her death in his own eyes) the death actually effected me, unlike some other comic book deaths that kinda leave you feeling, "meh" i was actually, "OMG NO!"

KNEW the Indigo's were Empaths, and I think we all saw the whole "White light of Creation thing"

There's an important fact not in the scans here: Jason is powering Ronnie with his emotional responses.

I dunno, I really didn't enjoy this issue that much.

Lots of Flash/Green Lantern fanwankery I thought (That whole "Let's both slow down thing", I was expecting to end with Hal going down on Barry at any moment).

I was really turned off by the Indigo Lantern's and their two page exposition train. And am I the only one who thought the Indigo's showed up as less of a plot device and more of a plot convenience?

Still digging this, I guess, but it just feels like the main title is being used to say "Hey, go buy this mini-series".

I want to believe everyone that dies during blackest night will be brought back to life but so far only d-listers have died which is typical of a cross-over so I'm skeptical . Hell Batman's 'death' means all bets are off for even b-listers.
