Bryan Q. Miller Talks Batgirl #1
Thought some might want to hear Miller's insight on the events of Batgirl #1 and what it means for Steph, Babs, and Cass.

Spoilers of Batgirl #1 will be within this topic so click on your own accord.

From Newsarama:

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090820-miller-batgirl.html

I decided to put spoiler tags given this issue was released yesterday. So here's what he has to say on Steph her new role in the Batverse:

Miller : The goal isn't to ignore anything with Stephanie that's come before. But one of the goals Mike and I had talked about when we were cobbling this together was to get Stephanie to a place where, if you're a new reader who's coming in, and hopefully there are new readers who come in from time to time, there's not so much heavy up-front information that you have to digest to get into a character.

So this is her first day of college. It's her first day of a new life. It's her first time out in this suit doing something she knows she shouldn't be doing but she can't help because she is who she is. And so, in trying to do that, we just wanted folks to get the chance to meet her, not her history. The goal is to touch upon that eventually, but we wanted to get the show up and running. Get people to meet Stephanie before we started delving into some of the mistakes we've made in the past.

Nrama : OK, under that header, "meet Stephanie," how would you describe her to a new reader? What's your take on who she is?

Miller: Stephanie is a fiery young woman who is very spirited. That zeal will often get her into trouble as she has this tendency to leap before she looks and will hopefully, through the course of, especially these first three, she'll learn the value of at least looking while you leap, if you don't have the foresight to look before you leap. At least know what you're getting yourself into. And our goal is to take her to a place where it's this young woman learning through the bat family, under the symbol of the bat, through Barbara Gordon's experience and tutelage to step into adulthood, and to take on more responsibility in her life. And to not let herself be defined by the mistakes she's made, but to use those mistakes as fuel to help others not make mistakes and make the world a better place.

On Cass and the events surrounding her from the issue:

Miller : We'll get into what Cassandra has been doing at a later point. But we also didn't want to immediately start with the very muddy waters of several Batgirls right away in the first issue. But we'll get into what Cassandra did when she left.

But you've got Cassandra who, in the previous Batgirl run, it's her redemption. By the end of the run, she was on the slate to be adopted by Bruce Wayne. So finally, she's put her issues with her bad dad to bed and she's on the road to recovery through Bruce Wayne. And what happens when that rug comes out from under her? What happens when you've finally found your place and your perfect father figure, and you're accepted, and then the person responsible for that is gone? That's obviously going to send you into a little bit of a tailspin. It's a curve ball.

So that's kind of what we're getting at in this scene. We'll get into the details of it later. But the nugget of why Cassandra walks away is she's not sure why she's fighting the fight anymore as she tries to come to terms with the loss of Bruce Wayne.

In the passing of the torch sense, I don't know that Cassandra was intending for Steph to do anything, but there's this thing where Steph takes the suit home and it's like the Telltale Heart where she's like, "Well, I promised everyone I wouldn't do anymore vigilante stuff, but there's this awesome thing with a bat on it in the closet. What would it feel like to wear that? What's it feel like to run across rooftops under the bat signal?"

Finally what Babs role will be in this series and of her status as Oracle:

Nrama : You mentioned the tutelage of Barbara Gordon. Does she have a recurring role as part of the supporting cast?

Miller : Absolutely. Barbara Gordon is still performing Oracle duties as she always has, but at first Barbara will not be happy with the idea of Steph running around in the Batgirl costume. And as you see in issue #1, it creates some conflict between the two. Eventually, Barbara and Stephanie will come to an understanding about how things are going to work.

Coming off the Oracle: The Cure mini-series, in her quest around the world when she was chasing Calculator, she got a little edgier. She got a little darker. And she may start to recognize that about herself. And what's to happen when you've got this darker thing going on with one person and this lighter spirit in Stephanie. They can't help but rub off on one another in different ways.

Some interesting bits to be sure. Sounds like Prankster or Toyman might be appearing in the book since they be the only two Superman Rogues. Then again maybe it's Livewire or Parasite. Honestly, I think I'm gonna stay on the book even with controversay choice DC had with one of the characters above. It's a Steph ongoing. How can I not resist that?

For legality (not my scans I think this was originally posted on Scans Daily and that the later two are scans done by nevermore):

I don't think you need the spoiler bars; just say there are spoilers for Batgirl #1.

so Steph is in college now, huh?
this makes me happy - they're actually letting their characters age! :D

it also kinda sounds like they won't screw Cass up . . . at least, I couldn't pick up on anything ominous in what Miller was saying

wish she still had the cowl, but if she gets a new name and still kicks ass, then I'm a happy camper

It seems like he's building off of what Beechen did (Bruce adopting her, ect) which I'm not crazy about.

Allowing characters to age sounds nice but is terrifically headache-causing when it's only really the younger characters. Middle characters like the original Titans get squeezed between the slowly-aging original JLAers and the fast approaching Young Justicers.

Place yer bets! PLACE YER BETS!

How long until Barbara Gordon abandons her latest charge in search of a new one? How long until Barbara gets tired of Steph, the same way she got tired of Cassandra and Misfit? PLACE YER BETS!

I've got between 18 and 36 months.

Hmmmm. I like that Babs will be a mentor to Steph, but arg, could we do without all the crap for The Cure? That mini sucked, and just needs to be quietly forgotton.

And I wouldn't call Bruce a "perfect father". He was actually pretty horrible towards Cass quite a lot in her series, as well as downright irresponsible with her.

But Millar really seems to get Steph, which I love. The whole "at least look while you leap" bit was particularily good. I also like that we're going to gloss over the whole Black Mask/screwing up with Tim thing, that's good too.

...but from Cass's point of view, he WAS a perfect father figure. He gave her something to believe in, something to be other than a killing machine, and he didn't shoot her whenever she fucked up.

You've gotta remember, the girl's got some serious issues from her upbringing, no matter how well-adjusted she seems at times. Bruce Wayne may have been the worst father this side of Cobra Commander, but he was still a huge upgrade compared to David Cain.

Steph's in college? When did she graduate? How did she have enough credits? I take it Tim also graduated, then? Alfred's gonna be pissed he's blowing off college to go run around in Doctor Mid-Nite's hand-me-downs. What about Cassie? I hope somebody remembered to put her in college too.

Ahah. Kon's still a sophomore. That's gotta suck.

I assume she got her GED at some point and moved right on to college. Although now that I think about it, she was at Tim's high school during Dixon/Nicieza's runs. So I dunno.

Either way, I think she and Tim have been advanced to "just past 18" for convenience sake now that their stories are moving in this direction.

I can't get over how much I hate everything they say about Cass. There are some great Cass/Bruce moments, but turning her into a character who was about finding a fantasy dominating father to replace the bad dominating father, who's now going to collapse in response to his death this way? Ick. That was the whole reason Barbara was a better mentor for her.

I can't understand how they can do that while they know they've got Dick, Jason, Tim and Damian in those whole somewhat well-done drama about how a family grieves, without involving Cass even at all. It feels like basically what happened was that somebody decided Cass was too good for Barbara, and they were able to push that enough to shove Barbara aside so Cass could have scenes with Bruce, but not enough that all writers were ready to integrate Cass as an actual sister. They should have just had Bruce say "I should have told you before, but we all like having you on the team."

Wait... if it's double or nothing, usually that means that one person won the last one, and the person who lost will either pay double if they lose again, or nothing. So Cass having money, assuming she won the first fight, wouldn't even be an issue, right?

I called it! POSSIBILITY OF MULTIPLE BATGIRLS, he mentions "right away" so I have a feeling this is going to happen.

I also called Cass's reasoning for suddenly storming off. I don't care if it's somewhat off of her previous characterization, it goes with what she is NOW. People want to ignore the mini series, but, really you can't, it happened, it set something up that needs to be awknowledged. Cass was finally if not editorially mandated to be accepted into the circle, wasn't, and is seemingly ignored as Bruce goes off and does his RIP and Final Crisis disappearing shpiel. (which is a shame since her and Damian interacting would be incredibly interesting to see) For her to be sullen, and confused, is perhaps quite new for her like this, that while she was originally committed to "The Bat" the symbol, perhaps this commitment, or what she thought she was committed to, is kinda thrown in the air after Bruce "dies". Death of a parental figure, no matter how bad, there will be rippling emotional consequences. Tim's irritability and dare I say breaking point, falls in line with this. I hope they'll explain Cass is dealing with far too many emotions or "ties" she just thought she didn't have, or that she truly found out she WAS fighting for Bruce. I like canon, but I find things interpretive, things can change I think.

This writer seems fantastic imo. He recognizes the mistreatment of ALL said characters, of Stephanie, of Cassandra, and of Oracle. I think on some level he realizes he's been handled a bunch of damaged DC goods (throw Helena into that mix too, poor costumed thing). From what I've seen he GETS Stephanie quite well, isnt' afraid to interject humour (have some waffles) which a lot of comics SORELY need. We'll also be getting Cass exposition.

This is good for all the characters, and I've seen Spoilerasmanbatgirl possibly coming ever since the very peculiar line in Robin about him not wanting to see her in the Spoiler costume anymore.
