...I am tempted to try that recipe. (If I weren't too lazy to cook, that is.)

I had a friend make it for one of our gaming groups. Suffice it to say, it's not as hot as we're lead to believe. My friend used the recipe out of the book.

Then I'm even more tempted! I like spicy, just not anaphylactic shock spicy.

I'm not surprised. It doesn't actually look all that hot.

The chili game has always amused me. It's almost like some primitive ritual of running the gantlet or enduring other tests to prove how tough and macho you are. You get this with a variety of cuisines, of course, but chili is the classic example. You're supposed to eat the stuff without batting an eye or showing discomfort, and ask for more while saying it's mild.

Green Arrow is just the sort to enjoy this. He may be a jerk, but he's a recognizable personality like people you'll meet in life.

Haha! The chili game is awesome. Some family friends have a sauna/sweathouse as well as a passion for spicy foods - combining the two leads to the most insanely poor-cleansing experience ever. You've got to drink tons of water afterwards of course.

It's largely for this reason that I generally try to make it clear early on in my interactions with my fellow males that I'm NOT the tough and macho type, and don't intend to pretend that I am. It works amazingly well - if someone says something like 'what's the matter - you chicken?', just say 'hell yeah, I am!' It kinda takes the wind out of their sails...

And I like how Batman's reaction is "needs more crackers".

(And it suddenly occurs to me how odd it is that two of my favourite icons are of superheroes eating.)

Um, actually, Dinah's not shown eating it, she's just giving milk to Arthur. (In other words, she's smart enough not to eat it ...)

Oh, Grant, you're life *sucked* if you think Ollie was the Best Dad Ever.

On the other hand, the art is nice. Grant and Roy both look adorable, and Grant looks noticeably young here.

Wasn't Grant molested by his father?

In comparison, Ollie is... only mildly sucky.

The molestation was a retcon that turned an already ugly situation into something even uglier.

Vandal Savage killed Mary Pratt after she gave birth and kidnapped their newborn son (Grant, of course). Everyone was led to believe that she died in childbirth, and the baby was stillborn. Vandal gave the kid to a family of evil scientists to use as a guinea pig. They froze him and unthawed him a few decades later, and gave him to lackeys to raise. The lackeys allowed Grant to be experimented on under the cover of normal childhood operations (tonsil extraction, etc.), and they turned on Grant when his powers finally manifested at age 16. Neither "parent" really loved him, but the mother at least made an effort of acting as if she did. The molestation retcon happened in Devin Grayson's Titans series.

[info]magus_69

I know. John Emerson was a dick, so the retcon wasn't exactly out of nowhere, but I don't see why Grayson went the route that she did. As it stands, it makes perfect sense that Grant has issues about trust and abuse. She didn't have to make it quite so direct.

Grayson's writing appears to tend towards a sexual implication in just about everything. Having a father who was a dick wasn't enough, it had to be a sexually abusive father.

Hey, sounds perfectly fair to me. As long as the innumerable lazy-ass rape stories for female heroes continue to spring up like weeds in May, the closest to balance we can come is a wider selection of male rape victims, and therefore I for one applaud Devin Grayson for doing her part.

Wait, so is he still Vandal Savages son? If he was he could have a family reunion with Scandel Savage at least, they could compare horror stories about their family I guess.

[info]magus_69

He's not Vandal's child, fortunately. Vandal never raised him. Now, he came across as an avuncular figure to Grant when they met, but he conveniently omitted certain details about how he became involved in Grant's life. The fact that he murdered Grant's biological mother, for starters.

I don't know whether or not Grant now knows the whole truth. I'm quite certain that he never found out during the course of his series.

"Milk will cool your taste buds faster"

"yessss pleeease, Dinah! hubba hubba."

And also, "if could use more crackers" should immediately be made into an icon, if it hasn't already.

It's actually true. Milk will cool your mouth faster on most spices, because it will either coat the spice particles or keep them from moving around. Or both. Then there are the evil spices where even milk works like water to stir the spice particles around your mouth, so you never catch a break.
