Batman and Robin #2 preview up
Batman and Robin #2 preview up at IGN where we see Batman and Gordon interact for the first time, and unlike last time they met with Dick in the cowl, Gordon has an IQ greater than a fruit fly.

And from the DCUBLOG site;

This should not make me smile, and yet...

(This is the Andy Kubert variant cover)

Oh, and this is the first page of the issue itself

Hopefully Alfred will slap Dick upside the head for handling the Tim situation so badly, then make cookies for everyone....

Oh, and for those interested, here is a link to a page of original pencil Quitely art from issue #1, which seems to have an interesting little story attached to it. See if you can spot the difference before you read the description.

Ha! Damien being smashed into a wall! I like this already.

Also, "Didn't they used to be taller?" - *giggle* Poor Dick probably can't clear six feet even in lifts.

When was the last time Gordon met Dick in a cowl?

I believe it would be during Prodigal. It was shortly after KnightsEnd, when Bruce left for further training after reclaiming the Mantle of the Bat, and left Dick in charge during his absence.

Also, congrats to Damien for having the shortest tenure as a Robin ever. I mean hell, even Steph held on longer than him.

Okay, that page with Alfred and Dick is pretty gorgeous, I have to admit.

But looking at the preview...arg. Perhaps it can be excused by the fact that he's with some unnamed uniform cops, but I am really getting sick of this whole "Commissioner Gordon may or may not know that it's a different Batman/who is under the cowl" business.

I mean, come on. There is absolutely no freaking way that Gordon wouldn't know that it's not the Batman he's used to, and I don't think it would take him all that long to figure out that it's Nightwing who has become Batman.

And, you know, if he ever needed confirmation that Batman was dead, it's not like he has a know-it-all daughter who he knows works with Batman and friends.

Arrg. The line about Damien makes sense, though, I will admit, since the Commish did run into him during RIP, I think.

I'd say Gordon absolutely DOES know it's a different Batman, but it's important to him, his men, whoever it is in the Batsuit and at a deeper level, to the city itself, that he acts as if this were the same Batman he's always dealt with. And he probably sense's that it's the guy he used to know as Robin and Nightwing, but he's keeping that to himself.

Robin's are more variable, he's met multiples of them and knows they come and go, even if he did assume Tim was Jason in a new costume the first time they met.

Of course he knows. And I like to think he knows who it is under the cowl as well. He knows Bruce was Batman, he knows Dick was Nightwing and now Batman... he just pretends not to know it - or doesn't try and get concrete proof at least - because otherwise he might have to arrest them. It's just plausible deniability.

To quote Lucius Fox from Batman Begins;

"If you don't tell me...I won't have to lie about it later."

Gordon's doing the same thing, he knows...but never had (or was willing to get) hard proof ergo he doesn't "Officially" know.

*nod* When Bruce tried to 'out' himself to Gordon in NML Gordon turned his back and told him to put the mask back on. Even going so far as to say 'if I wanted to know who you were I could have discovered it 10 years ago. And for all you know maybe I did.'

Which is as close to an admission as we're ever going to get that Gordon knows who he is, but won't officially let himself know it.

I also remember a similar scene from the BTAS episode "Over the Edge". Most of the ep was a Scarecrow-induced nightmare as Batgirl imagined that her own death in the line of duty would result in Jim Gordon declaring all-out war on Batman. At the end of the ep, she decided to tell her dad the truth about her being Batgirl. Gordon stopped her, saying, "You're a grown woman and I don't have to know everything. And in this case I can't know. But I want you to know that I'm proud of you. All of you."

Love the fight between Batman & Bane in that one.

I'm sure someone will remember what book this was from, but there was a Batstory (official one) somewhere where Gordon had long since moved on and someone, either his kid or partner, was told by Gordon to find his secret files. In those files, which I like to think I remember was something bat-related, it showed that Gordon had known for a long long time that Batman was Bruce Wayne, but choose not to tell.

Dang, someone remember what that was from, because now I want to reread it.

Agreed. A veteran detective who's worked closely with the Batman for at least 10 years is going to know in a heartbeat when Batman says word one. Not only is Dick not as tall as Bruce, but he's much more the gymnast than the power weightlifter. Gordon is going along with it for appearances in front of the department. He's going to wait and see how it goes, because Arkham is still full to overflowing and they need the assist.

He knows. If he didn't for the past few years, he definately knows after having to help Talia and Damian in WAYNE MANOR during RIP. But, like you said, he's with cops that he probably doesn't know that well. He can't let on that he knows who they are.

Erm, I don't think Dick is reacting to the Tim situation in that first page. The preview at the end of Issue #1 showed Damian storming off, ripping away his Robin badge, as just here; it's probable he'll be annoyed that he was almost beaten by a fat woman and try to storm off, then change his mind.

If that Dick/Alfred page is the first page, then it's likely Damian will be back by the end of the issue; Morrison has a little tradition of connecting the first and last pages of issues/stories, especially with questions, e.g. Superman Beyond. First Page: "What Shall We Write On Your Tombstone, Superman?" Last Page: Superman's Tombstone with the message "To Be Continued".

I'm with others in assuming that's Damian's Robin R and not Tim's. In Morrison's world Dick would consider it a tragedy if he failed in keeping Damian on his destined path or whatever.

I didn't realize that was the first page when I saw it.

With the knee-patches on his pants, it looks more like Damien is cosplaying as Robin at some convention rather than being the real thing. I'm surprised the villains even take him seriously. Or maybe they just really hate him too [sad] :(

It makes sense, though - no-one wants it to be known that Bruce is dead in case someone intelligent like Kathy Kane puts two and two together.

Also, Dini is bringing back Bruce, in a way...with (Urgh) Hush as fake-Bruce masquerading in his place. Your icon is very expressive of my feelings with this issue; why anyone would want to bring back that character, when there hasn't been a single well-written story with him in it, is beyond me.

(No, not even "Heart of Hush". Dull, uninspiring stuff, most especially in the bit where I could almost hear Scotty Evil screaming "Just Shoot Him!".)

Heart of Hush was bad, but the last few pages were absolute perfection and true to character for both Selina and Bruce. It also made an absolutely perfect place to put the pen down and say "Story closed, game over. Let's do something else now."

Which, of course, they didn't do.

yes, the bruce/selina moment was the saving grace.

i hated the heart extraction because it was really gimmicky and just weakens the catwoman character in the long run.

the hush looks like bruce angle wasn't that credibly done IMO (he performs surgery on himself? and it's perfect enough to fool others? what did he do with the voice? etc.).

Well, his name IS in the title, you kind of have to expect him to play a fairly major role in the story.

But I'd imagine Gotham Sirens, Detective Comics, Red Robin and possibly Streets of Gotham and Batman are likely to either be Damian free or use him in moderation.
