DiDio's latest move: Wednesday Comics, a.k.a. the next weekly series
DC made the announcement on its next weekly series earlier this week. It's going to be called Wednesday Comics.

According to Newsarama: "The concept is that we are trying to recapture the spirit, format, and sense of enjoyment that people had form reading the Sunday comics that arrive in newspapers every week," DC Sr VP and Executive Editor Dan DiDio explained to Newsarama. "So, for this 12 week period, we’re creating 16 weekly strips that will be presented in newspaper format, which will feature some of our primary characters, as well as some of the premiere creators in the business."

Edited to add: Found a bit more information, have added it in.

Here's the teaser image they released:

We don't know all the creators or characters yet, but we do know some.

Sean Galloway, the lead character designer for the current Spider-Man cartoon, is drawing a Teen Titans feature, and he's put up some teaser art on his blog:

Kyle Baker's handling both writing and art chores for a Hawkman feature, and some preview pages were posted on The Pulse:

On his blog some months ago, he described it thusly: "By the way, just for the fans, I'm making this story the bloodiest and most depressing story ever! Full of realism! HAWKMAN'S WORLD WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER! I've revealed too much. I can say no more."

Joe Quinones, who's drawing a Green Lantern feature, also put up some stuff on his blog:

On a message board, Kurt Busiek had this to say about it: "Keep in mind that it's more like two pages [as opposed to one] -- those are big pages. And mine, at least, is written as a series of old-style full-page Sunday strips, so it's designed to be read one instalment at a time, one week apart."

Lastly, Ben Caldwell, who's writing and drawing a Wonder Woman feature, put some stuff up on his blog, as well. He did the illustrations for the children's novel Wonder Woman: The Journey Begins.

He's been talking about it too, on his message board: "my original story was going to concentrate on the origins of WW and the amazons, working in a lot of mythic material that i think was been overlooked in the comics. as usual, TONS of research that is for nothing... DC gently steered me in a different direction. the new story will still focus on WW's early days, but less of the amazon mythology. can't say much more without giving away the story, but it will feature lots of classic WW villains like dr poison and cheetah, and also a lot of myths and history from around the world."

So far, we also know that Allred and Gaiman are on a Metamorpho feature, Azzarello and Risso are on Batman, Adam Kubert (writing) and Joe Kubert (art) are on Sgt. Rock, and Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner are working on a Supergirl feature.

This actually seems like a bloody brilliant idea. Pure, unadultered superhero goodness that anyone can enjoy! Hopefully it lives up to its potential, because from the talent involved and these scans here... wowzers to the max, yo.

I really like Cassie's costume. I mean it's obviously something she just threw together from stuff in her closet but that just feels so right.

Shiny. I hope the potential doesn't end up being a waste, 'cause this looks like it could be awesome.

Allred and Gaiman are on a Metamorpho feature

...

...

SOLD!

Sold 3 times over, in fact.

That's even before the rather awesome looking Kuseik/Quinones Green Lantern, Palmiotti/Conner Supergirl, and the presence of Superman, Batman, Titans, Kamandi, Deadman and the Flash.

But only for 12 weeks? I hope there's a chance of expanding it to 52, or simply making it permanently ongoing...

Looking pretty Naruto there Rose.

Anyway, I'm very excited for this. Hawkman looks awesome (Shayera needs to show up!). And I'm loving that 1950s retro feel of the Green Lantern story. Hopefully DC can get this out in wider circulation (like newsstands) and maybe pick up some more readers.

This really looks fantastic, but unless they get this somewhere besides comic shops, I'm not seeing it getting very far. I think this has a lot of potential to draw people in, as there's a lot more everyday familiarity -- and a lot less social stigma -- with the funny pages as opposed to superhero comics, it's just a matter of getting it out there.

"DiDio's latest move"

It's like we're in some kind of tense stand off with him :)

It's odd. I love the first Teen Titans drawing, but hate the second.

Either way, I am so sold on this.

DC honestly has a great opportunity here to up its market. Get it out to all the bookstores, all the supermarkets and Wal-marts and Targets - because I know that *I* would totally buy this. It sounds exciting, and it sounds dynamic fun - because while I love arcs and serious developments, there's something to be said for those good old-fashioned weekly sequentials.

Things in particular I noted:

- Quinones! I am in love with his art from Project Rooftop, so seeing his stuff in print excites me in many ways.

-I like Cassie's design. More in keeping with what she SHOULD be wearing. Teen Titans, remember.

- Allred and Gaiman. *dies*

- Conner! Oh God yes!

- I'm hopeful for Wondie. I know that they cut out major mythic but if his work is any good he could definitely be in the running for more mythic Diana stuff :)

...which means it'll probably get cancelled after 3 issues. :/

So far I'm sold for the Supergirl, Teen Titans and Kamandi parts.

Cheeks' Miss Martian is delightfully adorable. Look at that pigtail and those oversized boots, so adorable.

Jaime as always is a plus to any story!

Also, Rose suddenly looks totally like a ninjapirate.
