[ Today, Guilford is taking a break from his work, and to further take his mind off of the events of the day-before-last. He can be found:

1) In the morning at Dani's, the coffee shop, enjoying a cup of black tea and some biscuits. The booth is empty, and there is only one cup, but surely he can't be expected to read and enjoy breakfast in peace when the establishment is so popular amongst the other inmates, now can he?

2) Spending mid-day in the library, perusing the shelves while he hopes something catches his eye. Fiction is the order of the day, and perhaps he should expand his reading now that he has the opportunity to peruse selections from multiple worlds so easily.

3) Finishing off the evening with a quiet drink at the tavern. The Devil's Compass might have had a number of occupants earlier in the day thanks to the other man's call, but it doesn't seem like a lot of individuals stuck around. Which suits Guilford just fine as he sits at a table, nursing some bourbon on the rocks. In an uncharacteristic sight, his glasses are off and resting on the table, and even his hair has been let down. His expression is far from being relaxed. ]

[Someone else was at the library as well. He was taking a bit of what he had talked about with Sasha the other day to heart and looking into some of the myths and legends from other worlds. It was something that had interested him a little back home, mostly because his father had looked down on it, but it was what had gotten him to his armor. When he wasn't focusing on things like science and astronomy, his next interest was reading those old stories and things, almost to see if he could find an element of truth in them.

He was rather engrossed in his book and, while peripherally aware that someone else was there, he didn't feel threatened by anything, so he ended up sort of bumping into Guilford as he walked past, dropping a book or two in the process.]

Oh... sorry about that. [He went to retrieve them from the floor.] Didn't see you there.

Evidently. [ Rude, much? Well, people should really be more mindful of their surroundings. He had spotted other occupants upon his entrance, and while he was not pointedly avoiding anyone, it was just in his nature to not approach strangers here.

So much for that. Guilford took a half step for the clearance to crouch, himself, and collect the upturned volume of some encyclopedia or another that had tumbled from his hands on impact. ]

[He raised an eyebrow.]

Heh... right.

[Well, then. He had apologized. He wasn't trying to be rude. Sheesh. Feeling a little weird suddenly and wanting to smooth this over despite his awkwardness, Touma put on a quick smile.]

So, uh... you come here often? [Oh, god... he was NOT trying to pick you up, Guilford, really.]

[ Fortunately for the boy, Guilford would not know the more obvious pick-up lines if they punched him in the face. ] I do. [ And he might have just left it at that, with the book in his hand once more, but he decides that it would not do well for the school's image if its staff were rude to the younger inmates.

Guilford smooths his expression, no longer seeming quite as stern. ]
Though today I am not here on school business.

Oh. So you're with the school, then. That's cool. Do you teach? [The books in Touma's hands might have looked pretty hefty for someone like him, both in size and subject.]

No. [ Not yet, anyway; but if some of those core classes remain vacant and he can be properly convinced... ] My duties are strictly administrative, as an aide to Princess Euphemia.

I considered it, but it is not within my realm of experience to educate. [ Which is at direct odds with how much he seems to enjoy lecturing others...

But even Guilford never trained soldiers; his position required far too much of his attention, so that anyone who was ever assigned under his indirect command, as Cornelia's right hand, would have been a veteran in their own right. She would settle for no less. ]

I have no particular desire to do so. [ So he isn't about to answer the hypothetical question. ] However, I regret to see our core classes abandoned so readily. Literature, mathematics, science... [ The rest lost were more advanced, or niche course, so he was not as attention to them. ] There have been no volunteers to resume lessons in the absence of the original instructors.

Huh. Math and science are some good classes. [In case the astrophysics book Touma was holding wasn't already a clue on where his interests lay.] My favorites back home.

They are kind of tough for some people, though.

I see. [ It seems like a noncommittal answer, but Guilford did take notice of that book. It did not sound like the boy was volunteering, but the heavy nature of the subject matter had him questioning his general level of intelligence. ]

That is likely to be a common impression in this prison, due to the diverse background of its populace. [ Guilford adjusts his glasses. His eyes still feel a twinge of irritation, but at this point he's bearing with it and finds no trouble so long as he guards them from direct sunlight. ] Hence why I find myself disappointed.

I had actually been thinking of signing up for some of them. You know, as a student. Keep the mind the sharp. [He smiled a bit at that.]

Shame that no one wants to teach them. They're pretty straight forward. Not a lot of abstract stuff to worry about.

[Plus, Touma probably looked pretty young still. He was still only in his late teens. Kind of young to be a teacher.]

How many classes do you have at the school that are actually running right now?

[ Guilford seems mildly pleased to hear that, even if he was not the one to give the boy the idea in the first place, from the sound of it. He nods. ] I recommend it. My own bias aside, there are not many activities to keep one's mind active. It would be more engaging than reading alone.

[ With barely a second's thought: ] Seventeen — counting the two levels of technology courses and the two English language classes as one, each.

That's true. [Touma nodded.] I mean, after a while, reading only goes so far if you don't have anyone to talk to about it. [He wondered for a moment if Nasuti would be interested in teaching. He'd have to ask her about it next time he saw her.]

That's a pretty good number of 'em, actually, considering this is probably a small school. You have a catalog or anything?

[ The boy has it right, though that just serves to remind Guilford that he has an appointment to make with Sasha. ]

There is one, though I do not have a copy with me. [ And, really, that's the second time someone's asked. Don't people check their welcome baskets? ] Any copies circulating are bound to be dated, but a posting is available in all the major halls at the education center.

It was a small matter. [ One Guilford can easily forgive, since the boy at least showed some remorse, and an interest in the school.

As to the last part, he simply nods once, then turns to head the other way toward the reading tables. ]

[Michiru is out early that morning intending on doing her errands early so she can work on planning for her class tomorrow. First things first, some tea to get her day going. So she had gone to the coffee shop to get some this morning.

Once she's gotten her tea, she spots a familiar face so she walks over to at least say hello]

Good morning, Mr. Guilford.

Well enough, thank you. [ Said with a brief decline of his head. He takes note of her tea, but her body language has not yet made it clear if she is merely indulging in pleasantries or if she had some business with him.

Next, he sets down the book in his other hand, a finger folding a corner to mark his place. At least he can give her a few moments worth of attention. ]
What of you?

Indeed. [ It's bad form to be envious, since there could easily be other explanations for what happens to inmates who go missing. ] We are fortunate to have your expertise. Have you begun to draft your lesson plans? [ Someone was taking this rather seriously, even if some teachers did not. ]

I have. I've been working on them since the staff meeting. I'm hoping to be able to have the class again in a few days. The schedule says tomorrow is another class, but I'd like to give the students and potential students some advanced notice.
